This insanity brought to you by Batty:
Honestly, after playing for a bit, you ideally want skills you won't use much as your main, so you can then force a levelup by doing them instead of levelling during combat or doing other things you do all the time, which allows you to control your stat gain a bit better. Makes a better character overall and you don't really sacrifice much skill gain either.Keep in mind I don't take my own advice here.
I agree and disagree here. While there are some skills that you shouldn't take, like athlets or speechcraft, you want some of your major skills to be skills that you use a lot, like your weapon and armor choices. All you have to do is powerskill your minor skills at the start of a level in order to get your bonuses. Also, unless you're a pure caster, the leveling issue is entirely exaggerated until about 30+ if you play intelligently. Of course, you won't learn to play intelligently until you've been playing for awhile, but that's besides the point.

Raising mercantile is kind of wasteful.Join the mage's guild. Create a spell that, for 2 seconds, gives you +100 mercantile and hits your target for +100 charm.
Instant uber prices on items!
I haven't found a merchant with more than 1200 gold though. So selling all that daedric gear at a quarter of it's value seems like a waste. Unless the spell gives you the investment and +500 gold perks.

You get tons upon tons of the gear, especially if you're clearing a number of gates (like you should be). By the time I was 20, I had over 100k gold. This is after buying every house, upgrading the Skingrad house to maximum, and having a mercantile of ~30ish. You really only need cash during the early levels, which is when you're not going to have a high mercantile anyway.

I shall test this right now, zomg~

Got through it this way. Kinda felt like cheating, but whatever.
Late-game, Mercantile really doesn't matter much as by then you've got too much gold anyways, but selling anything to anyone cuts down on a lot of headache.
What the game really needs is a good money-sink other than houses. Personally, I think your house should have a chance of being robbed at night. You could hire servants, or get married, to have someone stay at your house to keep it safe while you're away. I also don't think that items should magically pop back into place when they're moved in your house, because it keeps fucking up my armor and weapon displays

Just wait for good fanmade houses, back in morrowindi ahd one full of manquins to display armor on and weapon racks for swords and stuff, it was like 4 floors and ahd display cases for everything (i had dozens of scrolls all ncielys tacked and everything)

I must duplicate that with Nirnroot... D:
To perform:
Have 2 kinds of arrows in your inventory, a bow, and an item you wish to duplicate.
First, equip your bow, and the first kind of arrow.
Second, begin to fire the bow by pulling back the bowstring. Aim at the sky, preferrably.
Third, hit tab while having the arrow pulled back. Now, equip a second kind of arrow (the more you have of this type of arrow, the more of the item you wish to duplicate you will make) twice by clicking on it twice.
Fourth, drop the item you wish to duplicate.
Fifth, don't left click and hold while leaving the menu, just let the bow fire.
You should shoot one of the original arrow that you had equipped, and all of the second type of arrow you had should turn into the item you wanted to duplicate.

Did you give one of those to the beggar over there?
Sneaking up on the same stuff was no problem when i wasn't wearing the cowl either. I tried all this with and without chameleon. Dr. Gee fucked around with this message on 04-06-2006 at 02:07 PM.
So I just took an entire suit of glass armor and using Xivaili souls I summoned myself, gave them all (save the shield) 20% chameleon.
Instant suit of "this is so god damn broken". D:

can you do that to any armor?

I can enchant crappy rings with 20% chameleon, as long as it's a grand soul (1600 points). Why you'd bother with anything less then the best though.. heh.
Invisibility and anything less then 100% camo will give you a predator effect when you try and view your character; but straight up 100% will make you entirely invisibile. You won't see your sword/bow/shield or yourself in third person.
Fortunately, nobody else will either, unless you talk to them (Or make a noise).
nirnroot galore.

There's one, I think it's in Chorrol, that's 25,000g.
