This is actually ridiculously handy.
me and vinven made some but when we walk through nothing happens.
So, you don't use them

[edit: server patched and running as of 21:17 EST, llamacraft addons broken and not implemented. Only you can prevent diadem fires.
[edit2: You can still repair your tools by dropping them.

Redstone circuits work better in MP now.
As far as I can tell, this, in addition to reeds now growing on dirt adjacent to water (they didn't grow before), is what Notch fixed in the multiplayer

Not constantly crashing is a nice touch too.
These chunks are pretty large, and should contain NO hell monsters. I think. I wasn't particularly methodical about their removal so there might be an errant ghast or pig zombie floating around, but if there are they should stay in hell and if they don't they're easy to remove (load the chunk with monsters flag set to false, then save it).
Running pure hellmode taxes the shit out of a server right now, but I think just these chunks should be alright. If they aren't, I have the map backed up as of 10/30 and I will restore it without the hell chunks. Maradon! fucked around with this message on 10-31-2010 at 02:02 PM.
Incidentally, I also built a skyroad extension out there. I fucking hate building those things.

Verily, Nina doth proclaim:
It's gathering the sand and glass that annoys me.
If you have a massive column of sand, try this...
destroy the bottom block and immediately place a torch under where that block was.
All of the sand above said block will be destroyed.
torches: the more you know...
And I had an outright server crash (I assume) just walking there earlier.

I've been finding the more I mine in hell blocks, the more lag I seem to get, eventually reaching the point everything I do gets undone by the server. Yeah, my server bluescreened at that time. As of right now I'm going to start rolling back the server. No hell for us, still way too unstable.
[edit: Server is now rolled back to 10/30. Four hours making a skyroad all the way out there.. LOST Maradon! fucked around with this message on 10-31-2010 at 10:46 PM.

* hellworld=true no longer overwrites old save chunks. Player positions will still break if you switch it on a running server, though
* boats are now visible to other players
* minecarts move nicer
* fishing kinda sorta works, but needs more work
* sheep and cows look like sheep and cows now
* buckets work now
* fixed stairs being really difficult to destroy
* increased the timeout before “Took too long to log in”
* made it possible to ride carts and boats
* added (after lots of work) the ability to steer server-side boats
* added “no-animals” setting. if true, animals will immediately vanish
* added support for more animation settings. Currently it’s just the “riding” animation, but the same system will be used for sneaking
Can we run a mini-test shard to see how thorough this minecart thing is?
Also, note the "sheep and cows look like sheep and cows now" -- something tells me sheep might get un-extinct, and the hordes of chickens spawning in my castle will stop dropping leather when suiciding into plumes of lava.

edit: About the "stairs being difficult to destroy" part - just put something on top of the stairs and they'll turn into cobblestone which is easily destroyed. Ghost of Forums Past fucked around with this message on 11-10-2010 at 06:11 PM.
Also, I ran a quick test server, and minecarts are still impractical. Latency kills minecart boosters so there's basically nothing to do with them. Maybe powered minecarts would be tolerable, but for now it's still all too shaky.

Asterisk probably says this to all the girls:
So I heard they possibly fixed minecarts, but I didn't want to risk testing them.
I tried them in other multiplayer servers and they work fine with one important exception - they are completely indestructible.
Bugs and boosters on multiplayer minecarts
edit: I built the Tokyo Express behind Tokyo Tower. It is powered by a booster that works 99% of the time and is ridiculously fast. It currently ends at my house - skyroad access is available from my roof.
In the future I plan to allow people to pull a lever to chose their destination. Pulling the lever one way will end the cart at my house and pushing it the other way will end it at skyroad's midpoint station. (This can be done using redstone, repeaters and track switches).
The instructions on how to use the booster are clearly marked in the expressway entrance. Ghost of Forums Past fucked around with this message on 11-13-2010 at 12:03 AM.

You can use lava or, allegedly, flint & steel to destroy minecarts.

I made a cactus trap to kill a cow that somehow managed to walk through a cobblestone wall. The catcus destroyed the minecart. The minecart could be picked up.
You can turn minecarts into items by using a cactus, though be careful - cacti can damage dropped items.
As Maradon and I found out.
I'm sorry I blew massive holes in your garden sir.
Bummer.

Ever since Tribes 2 where mighty cactii would destroy tanks and aircraft, these devious succulents have become more subtle but no less imposing.
I'd hop on and do it now, but I just finished a 6 hour stint at linking my two bases in the real world via hell AND the real world.
A 45s minecart ride in hell translated to a full six minutes in the real world, hahaha.
I -will- give you all my legitimately mined iron, though, and considering I excavated my tower, the entire reflecting pool, and the tunnel to the frontier without using any, it's pretty substantial.

Is that why you are one Minecart short? You had 4 yesterday and now you only have three?
Also, does anyone know what happened to the Minecart on the red line? It disappeared but there's no visible damage to the line.

If anyone wants to donate to the public rail, any iron donated to the public works box in the public works house near the spawn would be aperciated.
I found a possible good mining spot where I drew boobs in the sky, will try going on a mining trip tonight.
Update: Good mining spot. Look for the large BOOBS in the sky behind Diadems place to the right towards the ocean. It's an island. Asterisk fucked around with this message on 11-16-2010 at 04:19 AM.
