New map now with SHADOWS!

80085

In other news, the server IP will be changing on DECEMBER 1ST as I move into my new apartment. I don't know what to yet. There is a small possibility I will not be able to run it at all, in which case I will transfer responsibility to a volunteer.

My co-worker has told me many times that if I value my marriage, I must never play Minecraft. I am inclined to believe him.

The same could be said of any good game, really. I know a guy who's been playing CS:S so long the UI is burned into his monitor. And it's an LCD.

Sweet, it came out perfect.

Right under the 80085 is the mine I was talking about.

Also, my new transportation system is complete. Just go to either building marked Train Station V, wait for a cart to pass, and right click to board.

I dunno, it seems like that kind of game where you go, "OK, I'll play for a couple hours or whatever" then before you know it it's like four in the morning and you have to pee so bad that you have a boner.

Having just spent about 27 of the past 48 hours building a platform in the sky, I may have to cede this point.

People haven't been on the server much this week. Is minecraft not cool anymore?

Or is it just that people are playing SP because all the coolest stuff doesn't work online?

I want to complete the minecart project to the frontier, but with having to test constantly for chunk-loading issues, there's little impetus to do so without it being intensely frustrating. Also, I lost about a stack of iron in a furnace for no reason. :/

I had connected my keep to the few cave complexes I could find (thanks to first-time download lag giving me x-ray vision ), with the intent of going spelunking. But then I realised that it's not nearly as fun when running across a zombie means staring at each other intently.

Also, I've got absolutely no free time these days as I wrap up my bachelor's.

I went digging under the ocean and found a spider spawner. So if anyone needs string hit me up.

Also Diadem, while riding your minecart tracks a creeper got to me and blew up a section near Tokyo tower. I tried to rebuild it and reinforce to prevent it from happening again.

Not your fault. What section exactly did it happen in? It should have been creeper proof.

Behind tokyo tower, near your booster you put on the lane that goes to my train station.

I put a switch at my train station to connect to yours, so you can gain momentum on my circular track to go farther. Only problem is it can be difficult to hit the switch while going that fast.

This game is seriously fucking bugged.

Do not die or you'll lose all your shit. Nothing dropped when I died. I lost multiple diamond-tipped tools and my entire inventory.

After I died and respawned I was unable to pick up normal items (such as reeds I tried to harvest).

Arrows are also fucked. They don't go away after you pick them up - you just keep grabbing the magic arrow until your inventory is full.

If you are experiencing lag be careful - it can turn deadly.

Everything Diadem says is true, but on top of that the server end is shitting itself worse than it ever has. With even one person logged on, there are huge memory and CPU usage spikes, and the server goes non-responsive after 30-40 minutes even if they log out before that.

That said, my internet is getting shut off in a few days anyway, and I'll be moving into my new place. Rather than try and patch this thing together, I'm just going to take the server down until 12/2/2010. Hopefully by that time Minecraft will be patched up and I'll post the server's return at it's new IP and port.

So I generated a new world. As soon as I spawned, I instantly heard zombie moans. It's a snowy map. I take a few steps forward when a huge chunk of sand just collapses in to the earth. I instantly found my spawner.

Got some free iron ingots, a saddle, and two chests(and some other junk) to start my adventure with, as well as an awesome feather farm. 6 zombies spawn at night, when daybreaks, I collect feathers.

The iron gate is because of the cavern entrance in to the spawner dungeon. Keeps the zombies from wandering in and not dying from the sunlight. The animals are because, well, animals are dumb. I built a perimeter fence to keep them out.

I admit it. I'm an addict.

When's the server coming back?

Maradon!
posted 12-03-2010 07:07:02 PM
Well, I'm set up at my new apartment, but there's a hitch:

My new internet is METERED.

(If you already know all about Comcast, turn to page 25)

Comcast joins the short, but prestigious list of groups and companies that I absolutely fucking hate. I'm subscribed to their advertised 20/5mb package which, on the dslreports.com speed tests, clocks in at roughly half the download speed of my old FiOS 15/2mb package (slightly higher uploads though!). It's also $5 more per month, because they require you to rent your modem. I also had to pay a $100.00 install charge and all the installer did was connect the modem to a piece of coax that was already in the apartment.

And on top of all that, I cruise around their shitty little web portal looking to change my password, only to find that I'm metered up to 250gb a month.

So, why not go with someone else? Can't: Comcast has a monopoly on fiber service to this apartment building.

Fuck.

Comcast.

(Page 25)

I'm still willing to run the server if it doesn't eat up all my bandwidth, but I'm also wondering if SMP is even playable yet. Last I checked, monsters were killing people with no real visual indication of damage, and dying meant permanently losing everything in your inventory most of the time. I haven't been at the computer for about four days so I don't know if there's an update.

Any thoughts?

My first thought is "fix your fucking sigpic"

After that, even as a minecraft addict I say not getting your internet connection cut off is more important than hosting a server.

You may want to check your normal usage for a few days. If you throw your server up get a program that monitors bandwidth and then see if the levels are reasonable after a few days.

If it comes down to it, I'd be willing to put some cash up a month towards a minecraft server if you want to host off site (maybe $20/month or so).

I'm not sure the state of the bugs, though i do know Notch is working like a madman recently.

For what it's worth, I watch my bandwidth like Big Brother watches you, and downstream traffic from Minecraft averaged 20kB/s with occasional bouts of 30-40kB/s when downloading new chunks. That's quite an intensive pull server-side with more than a few clients connected, I gather. It might not leave you with all that much elbow room given a 250GB quota.

Look on the bright side: it could be worse! My ISP has had a 30GB cap forever, and only recently acknowledged modern times! raised it to 40GB. We have to buy blocks of extra bandwidth, otherwise we bust this shitty limit just watching youtubez. And it's $5 per extra GB. God.
