I have two main objectives for the server:

1) Get it to not run like shit. This means getting a custom server app and figuring how to get it to run SMP so that people can actually fucking connect to it with the standard client.

2) Convert our level so that it runs on the custom server app.

This second item is turning out to be an enormous pain in the dick. There exist a handful of utilities to convert minecraft maps from one type to some other type, but they all involve "select your map (eg. server.dat) and click convert" which is nice except that the vanilla server map is comprised of about 3,500 individual .dat files all less than 6kb in size. I have yet to find any mention of how to handle such a map by anybody anywhere.

This, of course, is moot because after hours of trying I have yet to get any fucking custom server app to actually run. After downloading Python 2.6.6 dev environment, a mySQL addon, Python Twisted, json, and a handful of other development addons that I could only identify by the errors that their absence produced, I finally got iCraft to execute only to have the client crash with an "Unhandled Exception 2" error in the server log every time you try to connect.

I'm basically at my wits end, so if anyone knows anyone who knows how to run this shit properly, I'm wide open to suggestions.

Oh yeah, and I can't connect to my own goddamn server without the client crashing after a few minutes.

Server will be up later tonight (midnightish) with a few improvements for which I am hopeful.

Do not make any mine carts, they bug and create physics loops and destroy servers.

Also don't deface the tower I'm building.

If I understand the wiki right, walking on redstone wire will cause it to stop working. Although I wouldn't be surprised if it was buggy too.

Also, server coming up. Should be more stable. Let me know.

Using dust as a conductor probably isn't a very good idea anyway, they should allow you to mix it with gold or iron or something

Red dust is pretty much a catch all material. It's an infinite power source (torches). It's wiring. It's circuitry (and gates, or gates, etc), it's even magnetic (compass).

So, I had reached an impasse with my very first world. I'd built a tower (The Tokyo tower was an inspiration, thank you!), plumbed some depths, died a lot, mined a lot but I still felt.. lacking something. I had little iron, plenty of coal but nowhere to go. So I made other worlds and other adventures spawned, but I kept coming back to my first to explore, sink a new shaft or tunnel, only to be disappointed.

I got good at defending myself, setting up bases quickly before nightfall (an axe and pickaxe can be had out of wood in 3punches of a tree) but it all seemed so lackluster.

That was until, of course, I found.. THE CAVERN.

Everything I learned was just a prelude to this. It was like opening a portal to a whole new game and everything I had done on the surface was just to prepare me for what I was going to face. stacks upon stacks upon stacks of torches later, I STILL have not plumbed the depths of this massive, EXCEPTIONALLY rich cavern. 200+ iron and counting. 300+ redstone (Not that it's useful now). 500+ coal. And monsters and water and lava OH GOD.

It's like a.. a.. Oh god I don't know.

But it's amazing.

Yeah, sometimes you can catch a glimpse of all the underground caves when the geometry bugs out, and you can see IMMENSE caverns that stretch for the entire visible map.

Server crashed, btw, and I had to restart it.

Our map is seriously off the hook. Diadem's place is some sort of paradise tree fort. We have a tower and billboards built out over the ocean. We have skyroads connecting most major landmarks, with further expansion pending. My "tower" (turned Keep when I prematurely hit the height cap) is evolving into a sprawling Tolkien-esque altercation of elemental forces. I am seriously proud of my new armory/forge room.

As a side note, if you guys could reel in the torch deployment a tad that'd be great (diadem I'm looking at you). All those light sources are nice, but I'm worried it'll make the game inaccessible to people without nicer graphics cards. Throwing some on your building is fine, but arbitrarily deploying large numbers of them out over the countryside seems unnecessary.

Speaking of which my main computer is down because of a disk read error on my boot drive and I can't boot off the other one because it has AIDS, I need to repair and then I'll try joining your server. I wonder if I can just do a repair of some kind with the Windows CD? Or do I actually have to put the drive in another computer and go through all this bullshit (chkdsk etc) to fix things

October 31st Updates

quote:

Explore a scary new realm! A brand new hell world for fast travel. Portal in, move ten meters, portal out, and you're hundreds of meters away.

Fight scary new monsters! Actually difficult this time around.

Experience scarier depths! The deeper you are, the brighter it has to be to stay safe.

Be scared of the dark! Torches will die after a while. Use flint and steel to reignite, or place lanterns that last forever.

Catch scary fish! Or possibly just regular fish.

Scare other players online! Less bugs, more implemented features.

Carve scary jack-o-lanterns! Pumpkins can also be worn as totally useless helmets.

Keep track of the scary time! A craftable watch lets you know when it's safe to emerge from the caves.

AND MORE! Biomes. More music. Better sounds.

Hey Maradon, what version of the server are you running? Me and my roomate are trying to get a server for LAN based play, but everything I get going is either highly broken SMP or lame classic stuff.

Or am I just grasping at straws and I should just be patient for a future release?

That's all there is.

I am running vanilla server 0.2.1, which is to say the default server by notch, and I would say that it's by far more feature rich and stable than any of the custom server offerings - none of which I can get to run in any functional capacity at all, much less SMP.

Minecraft community offerings all seem to be scarcely past proof-of-concept tinkering by isolated programmers whose work is inscrutable to anybody but themselves.

Anyone want to help build the Pirate's Cove Tavern over the ocean? I'm stealing an idea from asterisk - there will be a waterfall over the side of the tavern and a dock under it with boats. You'll enter a boat and rapidly ascend the waterfall into the tavern.

Or enter it from sky road.

To do this, when you enter the server IP address, put :25575 at the end. so
