Yeah, the problem with DAOC's item system is, that it is a double penalty for wearing out of date armour
Like, in EQ, if you are wearing an older, lower piece of armour, you don't get as much AC as you could have, or the stats. Same in DAOC, your AF wont be as high because it isn't brand spanking new
But, you can't wear old armour again, because damage is jacked the fuck up on anything older, you CANNOT wear anything out of date because the armour turns to absolute paper. Not only do you get hit more, but you might as well just sit down for the damage you get inflicted on yourself.
It made for less interesting variations on armour, everyone has to wear the same thing till 50 more or less, because you are USELESS without forking out cash on the new stuff, because any blows to lower armour will just destroy you.

Spellcrafting was a cool idea, but just destroyed what little item variety there was left. You were either wearing SC'd armour, or you are wearing crap. At 50, you will be wearing 102 AF'd armour SC'd to the max utility, or your armour is 'junk' more or less. Hell, my freaking healer epic armour was rendered useless by a series of easy as HELL quests in ToA that took all of an hour to do for an entire set.
The item systems were the only things I missed from EQ, I liked the condition/durability/bonus/quality effects in DAOC, items should wear out, but I missed the huge ass variety in items you would see people wearing at even your own level. Every time I grouped with other people, everyone was wearing different things and items stood out, there were popular and well known items.
DAOC just lost that along the way, quests for items before TOA only had a purpose if they were a non-armour slot, because SC had rendered everything else useless. People want jewelcrafting, which will just destroy the remaining items quests/drops outside of TOA
Only reason people want ToA items is because there are bonuses you can't get from SC'ing.

The guildhall in the big human city Im near is under a tavern called the "Slaughtered Lamb"
In it you see a guy with a hellhound who will train your pet in better abilities. I upgraded my imp to a level 2 fireball and got him an endurance aura.
Oh yeah, there are currently 3 pets you can get
1. The imp
2. The... Dunno its name but its the blue water elemental guy
3. The succubus.
Eventually you will be able to have infernals and stuff.

Imp is a long ranger attacker, the 2nd one is a high himpoint melee attacker, dunno what succubus does. She's the level 20 summon, and not too many people are there right now.
The spells are various DOTs and DD.
I have a direct damage spell and 2 dots, one of them is a standard DOT. The other is a "channel" spell, that you CANT get hit while casting it(other spells have a completion bar that loses part of itself when your hit.) If the monster dies while this spell is draining it then you get a "soul shard"
Soul shards are GREAT, as you can turn them into items and to summon your 2nd and 3rd pet. And to summon PEOPLE to you(which involves you and 2 others standing close together, not moving, then long range selecting a target)
It also can summon an Eye, like the level 8 magician spell from EQ.
The most useful aspect is to turn every monster into a soul shard then make HP and MP restores for your party. Potions can only be used once every 5 minutes, but these dont count as potions so it lets you use extra.
Oh yeah, Warlocks get the fear spell, which means I can reverse-kite I havent had to yet since I can get a monster of equal level to half HP if I do a spell bombardment + pet before it gets to me.
Items are fairly unimportant for me right now, I can only wear cloth and only about 5% of the items Ive quested for are cloth.
I still only die when a spellcaster attacks me, since they use some sort of fire spell with a range at least times mine and do twice as much damage as I do.

The mages get DD spells and are like "Oh yeah, we like to be niiiice"
We get DD Spells, Dots, an AMAZING armor buff(enouph that this level 30 said he could be a backup tank if one went linkdead) badass pets that each have individual powers and places to use.

Human Warlock is easily one of the coolest classes right now.
edit: more will come once I get the cash to buy more spells and finish up the quest for my 2nd pet, which does NOT have directions to the area Im supposed to go to. Had to tlak to a GM about it.
Spells arent REALLY expensive, but each costs about 7 50 apiece(thats 7 silver 50 copper) and Im COMPLETELY eschewing the fire spells and going full shadow(so I can get the better shadow damage easily and still get the extra HP talent.) [ 03-24-2004: Message edited by: Elvish Crack Piper ]
