This will be my official updates thread.

As some of you know, I managed to get into the WoW beta and am about 10 minutes away from completing the download -- finally. There is no NDA, so I can talk about it all I want, I just cannot share my account.

In that respect, I will use this thread to post thought-provoking or 'pretty' screen shots that I come across, as well as post insights and information based on my experiences therein. Hopefully, through me, it'll be almost like you're there, minus the fun and immersiveness stuff, etcetc.

Anyway, keep an eye on this thread! Maybe it'll even get stickied at some point!

I propose a challenge of sorts!

Folks like Delid are going to get this game, Beta or no. But what about me? I am indifferent to MMOGs in general! I therefore call upon you, Bajah, to use this thread to sway me and others of similar mindsets about MMOGs. Post the most beautiful, stunning screenshots you can, share stories of your triumphs, and explore as much as you can the richness of this game! Let us see how many people will be swayed by Bajah's posts!

I'm mostly interested in how the game mechanics work. What exactly all the classes are capable of, how they intereact and how the various mobs (damned if I'm gonna call them creeps) function. Stuff like that.

One thing has been made abundantly clear from everything I've read, no support classes. Priests were, in the early alpha, support classes, so Blizzard beefed them up on par with everyone else so they can solo just fine. Now they can play support, but are more than able to kick ass on their own solo.

Yes.

And don't worry, there's no such thing as "downtime" over 20 seconds in this game.

1h w/ shield.

Shields give you more AC, more stats, the ability to block (no shield = no % to block attacks), and I believe you HAVE to have one equiped to use the warrior's defensive stance. (Which is the only stance w/ taunt.) Though I'm not sure because it's not often I put down my trusty shield.

And this is all GOOD stuff because, as a warrior, you WILL be tanking.

If I've read my information correctly, anyone can learn to, they just won't be as good at is as Hunters and Rogues.

Any class can look ahead to skills they can learn eventually.

I never saw Dual Wield as a Warrior on ANY of the trainers at ANY level.

Now, this is just the beginning. Some of these screenshots will be boring to look at, but informative. I weeded out redundant ones or ones I felt weren't really all that useful. Since I'm still low level, it will take me awhile to be able to do anything -really- interesting.

First thing I saw when I logged in. Tips and scenery.

I am given a quest!

Sent to meet the Marshall, it auto-saluted him and another quest!

Bajah shall be paid to eliminate vermin! I like how the quests are done in WoW. None of that 'say the bracketed key words, bitch,' stuff.

I spot my first corpse, even though I killed nothing. And a dead player is glowing. Poor bastard.

Combat is pretty much like every other game out there. Very similar to DAoC. Autoattack with special abilities on hotkeys/timers.

Two things revealed in this screenie. One is that as you work towards quest objectives, you get banners to let you know you're moving it forward... and two, corpses you can loot have sparklies to let you know they're there.

Special Abilities page... also tells you what they do, etc.

Same thing here, except for spells. I told you some of these were boring.

Took me a few to figure out 'C' to open inventory and then 'B' to open backpack.. and then drag from backpack to equipable areas.

Leveling seems to give 10 'Training Points (TP)' and 1 'Skill Point.' Training points can be used as seen here.

This screen keeps you updated on the progress of your abilities... I think.

I cast a spell! I like how WoW's spells are simple yet very nice to look at. No overdone sparkle compensation like EQ. Less is more!

DING! I missed the graphic on the level up, though Nice big showy thing similar to FFXI.

After killing my vermin, I collect my shitty reward. Quests start to eventually allow you to get items or even your choice of items. Very nice system if I say so myself.

More running around, new quest, yadda yadda.

Unlike EQ or DAoC, running through campfires = bad mojo.

Hm. I think I took this one because it showed another ding and a tally completion in the same screen. Skill points are spent at trainers for class abilitis while TP can be spent on anything, anywhere.

Sparklies and a salute when you spend TPs!

Questy thing, choose a prize, get xp and shit. You get the idea, dunno why I took so many of these.

Aha! Got part of the level-up graphic with my NElf Rogue. I like the Rogue class quite a bit. Combos and Finishers versus chainable special attacks. Very fun and challenging.

Spent a skill point on stealth and demonstrated it. Very good looking.

Took an overlooking scenery picture for those of you wanting scenery.

Priests are soloing monsters I felt like a bowler with my dwarf, though. SMITE!

Targeted spells are different in WoW, too. You hit the hotkey of the spell and THEN click on the person you want to cast it on, if it's beneficial.

Hitting 'v' to show names of mobs is confusing at best... LoS has no effect on them. Needs to be fixed.

Now, as I said, this is just the beginning.. still so much to do and stuff I just can't do yet. Bear with

Enough moping! Bajah, you must discuss what skills/spells/etc. you have found!

Specifically, I would like to know how one goes about learning Talents, Skills and so forth, and how they improve (do they improve with combat? With constant use?) I'm kind of interested in what Street Fighting and Assassination are...

Everyone seems to have the same basic 'talents' they can learn, as you can see in the screen caps. Such as 'increase defense by 1' etc. Then there's things like weapon skills such as '2h maces' etc to increase damage of those weapontypes etc.

Skills are interesting. You get one skill point per level (so far) and you can spend them on class abilities of all types by visiting your class trainer -- I got Divine Aura for my Paladin and Stealth for my Rogue.

As you use abilities/skills/attacks/spells, their skills go up. For example, using combo building attacks with the rogue develops Street Fighting and using the Finishers develops Assassination. Using Holy Might attacks with the Paladin increases Holy Magic ability, etc.

It's like EQ in that respect, I think, but with a lot more variety that I can see so far. My Pally has about 3 Skill Points right now but everything is marked as 'unavailable' still when I visit my trainer.

This batch is a little better. I found the settings to increase everything to the maximum allowable choices, which means better water, extended clip plane, etc. Also found a way to add numbers to my health and mana/energy/rage bar, as well as putting xp at the bottom of the screen.

Also this batch has lots of scenery shots and cool things I found.

Look out, a place holder!

Some people need to be told how to do their job...

Ancient Protector

Herbalism supplies are just lying around, waiting to be found.

Apparently, you can chill out at fires and recouperate. Reminds me of SWG campsites. Maybe Hunters will be able to create this stuff at some point.

My first trade skill. This also reminded me of SWG.

In this picture, you can see how your tradeskills are listed right alongside skills and special attacks -- yes, you can rearrange them.

More tradeskill info. You can learn advanced trades by trading in skill points to learn them, etc. More SWGishness.

That's a big bitch!

Scenery!

A moon well... good place to relieve yourself. FOR THE HORDE!

Again, reminds me of SWG.. you can sit in chairs, etc. An example....

I found first person view... don't like it much. Don't see your sword/hands/etc. Reminds me of DAoC in that 3rd person view is better.

I call this one "Praise the Lord!"

Got a shot from the bend of the river... this is right before I found the settings to increase water texture, etc. Still a nice shot, I think.

This is right AFTER I found the settings for water texture... and other stuff to increase. See the difference?

Mapping system. The green dot is my current location, etc.

I died You can either run back to your corpse in ghost mode (invisibility+SoW speed) and take no xp hit, or you can hit an NPC and be rezzed on the spot for an xp hit.

Found a weapons merchant with a cool looking weapon... only to be offered NOTHING! DAMN WOMEN!
