Yeah you got me there, I really didn't see such a clever political move coming.

The detainees are going to be run though an arbitrary "trial" system that they probably haven't even invented yet. After that they might be sent back to their countries of origin, in most cases to be executed (aka "Rendition"), but most frequently they'll just be sent to other American detainment centers. Gitmo hasn't been closed, it's just been broken up.

The site may be closing, but not for any of the reasons you thought it should be closed if you're listening to your tribal leaders. You were brainwashed into believing that the gitmo detainees were basically innocent and should be set free, but they aren't and they won't be.

The act of closing the site itself is political theater. It's to make drones like yourself who only pay enough attention to politics to paint your face blue and chuck spears at the people whose faces are painted red feel like something momentous has been done, and it has worked.

It's true. Only 1 in 9 people or so are left-handed. That smacks of elitism right there. And it smacks with its left hand.

No I was brainwashed into thinking people shouldn't be held as prisoners of war if there is no enemy nation to surrender.

They are not war prisoners, they are just normal criminals. They should be tried for their crimes and sentenced with all due process and haste, and if we don't have evidence to make a case, they should be deported to their country.

Yes damn him for trying to avoid asshole press agents who constantly attempt to turn conferences into who-can-get-the-most-outrageous-soundbite contests!

The Bush administration had the exact same policy of blacklisting/stonewalling reporters and they were very secretive about everything. I could give a shit less who he talks to at press conferences if his administration is open and transparent.

So they have to be open and transparent in day to day business, which is not "easy for them", in fact, it invites scrutiny and makes people more accountable for their actions.

Answering questions at a press conference is just to give the main stream media some A/V to work with, it has absolutely nothing to do with accountability. If the media wants to call the administration on something, they can do it using the administration's own records.

Obviously as long as there are enemies to the United States we have to be able to beat, rather than tickle, answers out of them. No one need know that something like Guantanamo exists, though, ho ho (even though it's a psychological weapon).

Whatever.

Whether you think certain enhanced interrogation methods are warranted or not, comparing the more extreme ones to an unwanted latte is insulting.

Remind me about the part in training when you were forced to stand naked in a 50 degree Fahrenheit cell all night while being regularly doused in cold water. And then waterboarded the next day.

You dont stand in a cell, and its colder than 50 degrees F, but the guys going through BUDS do something similar to this on a pretty regular basis.

I could give a shit less about torture. But intel has a shelf life, and a lot of people in gitmo have been there for 3-4 years and anything they do know would be out of date and non-actionable. The people who have been there for a few months should obviously stay in military captivity for interrogation until we are confident that they no longer have anything useful to provide. But the people who have been there for 5 years- I need to see a path forward for them, and I don't care if that path leads them to trial and prison or trial and death or trial and going home or to a third country.

My main concern is that we have prisoners in captivity with absolutely no path forward. We're just holding them. With prisoners of war, they're captive until the war is over or they are traded for our people who are being held on the other side.

So, how is this war going to end? We're not fighting a country, or even an alliance. There is no central figure or governing body to surrender. There is no peace treaty to sign. This war lasts as long as we say it lasts, and that's dangerous. The "war on terror" isn't like any war we've ever seen before, and I have trouble even considering it a war. It's just a series of peace keeping missions, missions that could take place in any country at any time for any reason anywhere in the world. There is no central front.

So if we don't have a war, we don't have "prisoners of war". We have criminals. And if they're criminals, then treat them like criminals. Process them and send them to jail. Give them a trial. I don't care.

You Process American Citizens. These are not American Citizens, and the rules for processing them are in place from WW2, put in place by FDR. Unfortunately, most of the politicians don't know enough history, and think they should be afforded the exact same right American Citizens have, when they aren't.

Process them the way FDR did. They are NOT American Citizens, and cannot be afforded the same right as a citizen, lest we degrade the citizenship of the USA. They were caught on the field of battle, or they were planning to shoot us/harm us (be it American troops or larger schemes against the USA) in some way. They are NOT innocent until proven guilty.

Hell. We're treating them better than most of them lived in the Mideast. 6 square meals, shelter, living in a decent warm climate 365, giving them prayer books and prayer mats. Our Military inconveniences them only so often with what so many call torture, but it's really only hard questioning. Only 3 people have even been waterborded at Gitmo, and that was only approved on those three, the rest have been almost given a luxury vacation.

Gitmo is the perfect place to hold these guys, shark filled waters on one side, and mine fields on the other 3 sides. Only way in/out is by boat or plane. And where are they going to put these people now? Do you want them in your State? County? City? They would take up precious room in our prisons, they would be almost in worse conditions than they are now.

Anyways, what's up with Mr. Dictator, signing 5 Executive Orders already and not even trying the legislative process?
