Saying hello to people is free!

OkCupid.com is free!

The first is correct but the local parks (there are two within walking distance) are populated by high school aged skaters or homeless drug addicts. Not many normal people in general spend time there.

This is also correct and I suppose if I walked enough of the streets of El Cajon I might find one or two people that would respond positively to that. The part of town I live is primarily comprised of gated, low income apartment complexes and lower middle class (at best, it's mostly lower class) housing. People don't hang around on their porches and I already mentioned the issues with the parks.

Trying out plentyoffish.com for the moment but I have poor luck with those sites. I think I probably write bad profiles judging by what Bajah said earlier in the thread.

Bottom line: my city does genuinely lack good social opportunities for people my age. If I had a hankering to hang out with moms and high schoolers, there's Parkway Plaza. I don't need to bullshit or make excuses, this is just how the El Cajon/Santee/Lakeside area is.

So you won't do anything that is over 30+ minutes away because you are broke, and you claim that your area is crap and there is no place worthwhile within a 30 minute drive.

Also, you hate approaching people and you hate sunlight. And you like gaming but you hate all the gamers in your area.

Also you don't like when strangers strike up conversations with you, you mentioned. Also, you don't like to drink or be in situations where drinking is going on.

Um, good luck

It's a tiny little trade school kind of place; there are 12 people in the Information Systems Technology class I'm in. I mentioned I don't fit in well with them, which is mostly due to not having any common ground on which to connect with them. I don't watch the shows they watch, listen to the music they do, or even go for the same social activities. Not bad people, we just don't move in any of the same circles.

A lot of this is either misinterpretation or oversimplification. The first is correct, there really isn't much of worth I can afford to go do. I've never said anything about hating approaching people beyond that I'm put off by overly forward people approaching me, which makes me hesitant to be the forward person to other people; there's a difference between striking up a conversation and just coming out of nowhere with your opinion on something uninvited.
I don't recall saying I hate the gamers in this area; the only group of them is 30 minutes away, meaning I can't afford to mingle with them, and I could smell them from the other side of the room on the occasions when I have been up to Game Empire. I'm going to venture that that will most people off.

As to drinking, I have an objection to being in places where people are getting drunk, not where people just happen to having a beer. That what bars, clubs, and parties in this area are like; I'm not sure what it's like elsewhere but there really aren't any sort of homey pubs in my area where people just go to have a quiet drink or meal.

Seriously, when/if you get a job, seek professional help for this if it is so bad it is stopping you from interacting.

Number 2: meeting new people tends to start with this so at least be open-minded to friendly strangers striking up conversations.

You'll get a paycheck, forced companionship, and travel wont be a problem anymore.

Sarcasm aside, I understand the way you feel, having been there before myself, but really, if you dont stop thinking about why you cant do something, you'll never get around to being where you want to be in life.

I have some ideas aside from what has been posted that you might be interested in, as well as some websites you might pursue, but I am of limited time at the moment. PM me if I havent made you too pissed.

How many times have I said I can't afford to pursue the suggestions offered here? I don't believe I've said that I won't give them a go when it's financially feasible, just that I can't right now. I gotta thank the people who actually offered constructive advice but a lot of you are just plain useless.

You know, I've only been unemployed for about a month and a half after holding the same job for five straight years; I'm also actively training for a new, better job. I really don't think I've been a drain on society. Just for some clarification, I was informed October 1st that I wouldn't be hired by the company that bought the storage place I managed; that is, they told me I was losing my job with no notice at all.

There are two reasons I can see for why I haven't managed to get a new job: poor resume/cover letter writing skills and a weak job market within 10 miles of my home. Up until now, I've neither had the need to produce a resume nor have I had help to do so from anyone who really knew how to do it. Consequently, my resume amounts to little more than a laundry list of what I did at my last job and a muddled list of skills. I assume this is why I got no response from any of the property management jobs I applied for given that I've got a pretty fair amount of experience in the field. The school I'm training at offers some resume assistance but I have to try to squeeze into their schedule as they usually don't offer those services at this point in the program.

As for the weak job market and the 10 mile limitation, I've got an old ass car so I've been leery of long commutes. Of late, I've been abandoning that concern in favor of any work at all but I'm not finding a whole lot I could reasonably hope to get; applying above my qualifications is often not feasible because the jobs available want four year degrees or the like. Places like Circuit City and Best Buy are overstaffed right now (so I understand from people working at the local stores); I'm betting Target and the like are too, from what I'm reading about corporate cutbacks. Even the UPS and Fedex places in Chula Vista didn't have any shifts available. Hopefully this Sunday's classifieds will yield up some local businesses or some such with a position open.
