The only draw for me getting it right now is Resistance and the Warhawk open beta that's coming in 3 days, but I already have an HDTV (with HDMI, woo) and I have a large library of PS2 games I'd like to play with the SIXAXIS controller.
But the biggest things that attract me to the console are the new trailers coming out, and the upcoming Home service.
Uncharted HD Trailer - Looks like a modern Prince of Persia game. Nothing wrong with that, I loved the new PoP games, and this looks like it'll be damn fun.
Warhawk looks almost like a Battlefield game, which I've had endless fun with. Like battlefield, there's no single player, so I'm probably going to try out the open beta to see if it's worthwhile or not.
Heavenly Sword sounds interesting, a lot of people are saying it'll be the next best thing to God of War for a while.
I'm also looking forwards to Lair, but I haven't heard many other people really gushing over it like for the other games. It might just be the fun I had playing Drakan, but I think it looks pretty good.
Also, a lot of people are really gushing over Folklore - It looks cool, and the talk about physically yanking the souls out of people with the SIXAXIS controller sounds interesting.
I'm definitely looking forwards to Home, however. It seems like a really fun way to waste some time, and seems like it'll be just as big for PS3 as Live is for XBox. I also love how they've discussed streaming video and music from your PS3 to anyone who's in your virtual home, I can see that being a very popular feature amongst certain people around here.
The biggest problem is that none of this is coming out anytime soon - PS3 looks pretty but it has such a damn big pricetag and so few good, high-quality titles that are currently out. Things are gonna pick up soon, and there's rumors flying around about the next firmware update possibly upscaling PS2 and DVDs as well. With all this, I'm sorely tempted to get a PS3 now that I just got a hefty bonus check.
EDIT - Another Home video, showing off a lot more than the gametrailers one I linked to, is here.
Also, LittleBigPlanet. Khyron fucked around with this message on 05-21-2007 at 01:55 PM.
As for getting one now: NO. Don't do it. The system is good and will be great, but Sony will probably be dropping the price within the next six months, likely for the holiday season. Take that bonus check, put it in the bank (or, if you can't control your spending, try to find something like a 6-month CD (I've heard of a few banks selling 6-month ones).
Also note, the 360 already does upscale DVDs. As for the upscaling of PS2 games, I've heard that is only possible with the very new versions of the PS3 that don't have the original PS2 chip on board but instead emulate the games through software.
I say give it six months, then buy. Falaanla Marr fucked around with this message on 05-21-2007 at 01:59 PM.
Give it a year.

Why do you want to play PS2 games with the sixaxis? It doesn't add any special movement stuff to the games that I've seen. Plus, the R2/L2 buttons take a bit of getting used to since, unlike the 360's triggers, they're curved outwards. Have to press the buttons a bit different. Not to mention, I'm not very sold on the whole concept of motion-sensitive stuff in games, mainly because the technology still seems to be a bit lacking. Even on a system where it is the focus of most of the games, it is still not nearly as precise as it needs to be for some movements in games. Like Madden, the moves that you triggered with Wii controls were off quite a bit of the time.As for getting one now: NO. Don't do it. I've had bad luck with 3rd party wireless controllers with my PS2, and it'd be nice to have one that works well. Apart from that, the eventual upscaling of PS2 games will be pretty cool. All PS3's are eventually going to be upgrading firmware to software emulation, not just the newer ones - or so I have been told.
My biggest problem is that money burns holes in my pockets, I lack any sort of true hi-def DVD capabilities, which means that to take advantage of the new HDTV I have I'm looking at either the 360, or the PS3. Of the two I find the PS3 more appealing, but that's just personal preference.

Right now, the 360 is, head and shoulders, the better system. Note how I said right now, as I don't have a time machine and can't see how the PS3 will fare in a year. However, to get a HD movie capability with the 360, you need the HD DVD drive addon, which is 200 bucks.
If the money is burning a hole in your pocket right now, drop it on a 360 elite and HD DVD drive. The 360 just has more quality titles. If you really want a PS3, save your money until Sony does or doesn't drop the price this holiday season. Don't rush into it, you'll be throwing your money at a system to pretty much play Resistance.
So, yeah. Either buy a 360 now, or wait and buy a PS3 late this year or early next year.

Cons:
What are the big games out right now, and are coming out, for each of the current 3 "next-gen consoles"?
I want one, and have the money at the moment to buy one, but I actually haven't seen a reason to buy any of them. Most of the big upcoming games that I've noticed haven't interested me one bit, except for a couple of titles on the Wii (namely, SSB:Brawl and the Paper Mario game). So maybe there's something I just haven't seen yet, that would make buying a next-gen more worth it than I see it now.
Edit: Essentially, clicking on GameFAQs and looking at the upcoming releases doesn't show anything really interesting. Are there other games that aren't listed there that are coming out that are awesome? Currently the only games I'm interested in are Odin Sphere, GH: 80s, a handful of DS titles, and Fallout 3, none of which are specifically for next-gen consoles. Nothing directly, although it certainly doesn't help their appeal to third party developers.

360 - Half of the games you listed are nowhere near big titles. (Earth Defense, Dead Rising, wtf?)
PS3 - I can't say because I don't own it and I don't do research on it. But you definitely forgot FFXIII and Metal Gear Solid 4 which are the obvious big titles coming up.
Wii - I never read anything* you have to say about it so far be it for me to judge what you post.

The point is that sure you'll be happy with it for a while, getting all the neat stuff that's available (not much, but there's a little bit on PS Store). Then you'll realize you have a very expensive machine that will collect dust for half a year at best when all the titles that you mentioned will be coming out.

On the contrary, thanks to this thread I'm probably going to wait, but I'm genuinely excited over the new games that are coming out, and figured I would try to spur some discussion about them.
Also to add to the PS3's list would be God of War 3 (a few years away though), and for the 360, Rock Band.

Buy a $120 DVD player that upconverts video to 1080i or 1080p, and then all of your stuff will look awesome on your HDTV while you wait for the DVD format war to be decided.

MGS4 will probably be great. FFXIII's quality is extremely questionable, considering how many projects Square-Enix is working on. Despite being 2 companies merged together, juggling 20 titles is not a good idea.

Agreed. They're planning a ten year lifespan with the PS3. The system is overpriced with few decent games now, but it will probably be worth a purchase in 1.5 to 2 years.

To chime in: Madden was a cross-platform game and required different controls not only for the fewer buttons availible on the Wiimote, but also the greater degree of motion sensing availible.
On the games that are Wii-exclusive, the motion sensing is dead accurate (Assuming you spent a few minutes fucking with system settings, default has the sensitivity turned up far too high).
There's also a decent selection availible for the Wii besides Zelda and Wii Sports.
Including:
SSX Blur
Super Paper Mario
Trauma Center
WarioWare: Smooth Moves
Wii-play (Great multiplayer game)
Rayman (Another excellent party game)
Afterburner (Or similar. Fighter jet game. Excellent controls)
With Metroid Prime 3 slated for Fall. Along with Super Mario Galaxy.

I've always seen Nintendo (Well at least with the N64->Wii) as a "have some friends over and play video games" console, PS2 was the stock gaming, and Xbox as excellent online support (Which I still envy and is half the reason I want a 360) and decent games.
