FFXII isn't really that bad. Whether or not you'll like the game probably depends on whether or not you like the combat system. The graphics/story/VA are pretty good, a lot better than most JRPGs as of late.
Well, I hated the shit out of the combat system in the demo that came with Dragon Warrior 8, so I can't be too optimistic.

Yeah, you'll pretty much hate it then. I think it's an interesting system. Then again, standard turn-based systems, like DW8 had, bore me these days so I just like the fact that it's different.
The story looks to be delicious, and as such, I will buy it.

I've heard a lot of people that played the Japanese or leaked US version liked the combat system in game much better than just in the demo.
I didn't play the demo, but I really can't understand why so many hate the system. It's essentially a sped up version of the old system. You lose a little control over every little action to relieve the tedium of having to pick and choose the same ability/spell every battle. You can still maintain a bunch of control if you want, but it's a much faster than the old turn-based system we see in games like DW8.

From the descriptions I've read I'll be pretty gay for the combat and ability growth system. Massive flexibility so I can play with the characters I like and not the abilities I like? Yes please.

Eh, those dragons are barely huge. Nothing a party of L20s couldn't handle.

I wouldn't say that it has massive flexibility. You don't recharge MP fast enough for magic to be as useful as it should be, passive augments are better than technical abilities, and "quickenings" (overdrive) are overpowered enough that they're too tempting not to use. Still, you can definitely play around with the system and if you feel like grinding you could have very flexible characters.

Though you may not find it on store shelves until Nov.1, you know, with shipping and all.
The game has gone gold though, so it'll definately be Oct.31 or the day after. Willias fucked around with this message on 10-23-2006 at 10:45 PM.

Oh, right, I'm a munchkin for using those twenty out of forty levels available in BG2: Throne of Bhaal~
The standard D&D game maxes at level 20. After that it becomes an epic game. You didn't quote a party of characters at what is considered mid-level (8-14 or so), you quoted a party of characters at max non-epic level.
One would think that a party of adventurers that experienced would be able to handle a dragon that size, yes. However, there is also two of them, and it's false to assume every party you see is max level, or even epic.
Thus, my statement remains: That party is fucked.
