A buddy of mine works for the local refinery here in Superior, WI (Murphy Oil USA) and he was calling most everyone he knew to tell them to get thier butts out and buy gas now. It went up 10 cents a gallon today but it is slated to go up at least another 20 cents a gallon tomorrow.

The increase in price is at least in part due to rising demand for oil. Also gas is about the one commodity whose producers have to worry about some silly boycotts, even if x people decide to spend less money on gas x ^ 10 people who need gas to get anywhere are there to provide a revenue stream.

As I understand it, most of NJ's increase is blatant price gouging. The real hurtin' is going to be put on in a few weeks, when the reduction in supply becomes sustained.

The AAA website has links to various sites that give local high and low gas prices by station. Gas prices here are currently ranging from $2.60 to $3.32 per gallon (probably for regular and premium respectively, at different locations). I filled my tank Monday evening, so I should be okay through the middle of next week. Not that prices are likely to drop any time soon.

Yeah, unfortunately, although demand has increased, the current price of gasoline has more to do with speculation and worry and outright gouging than supply and demand. Supply right now is fine--it may not be in 10 or 20 years, but at this moment it's perfectly fine. There is a legitimate issue with refining the oil, but that, too is overplayed. A lot of the speculation is pure baseless fear because there's a war going on in the Middle East.

So the moral of the story, boys and girls, is to kneel gracefully in front of the coffee table and get comfortable. . .because it'll hurt less than being pushed over.

They were talking with a guy from Mobile on the way home from work on the radio.

He said that both of the 2 main lines that run to the NE States are out. One should be back in business within a week and the other within 2-3 weeks (waiting for power to be restored).

On top of that, there are currently 8 refineries not operating. 4 produce nothing but gasoline, and the others produce several different things.

Supposedly, since LA didn't take a direct hit, some of the production will kick back in within weeks, and there shouldnt be a long drawn out oil crisis.

Prices will raise, but it's not a gas shortage like we saw in the early 80s.

This is of course, one mans opinion. I for one don't think it will be as bad as people are predicting, though we will definatly take a hit.
