Spines/Regen is pretty good, but Claws is pretty much an inferior version of Spines IMO.

Claws is sadly mediocre. Whereas every other set offers a supplemental effect such as defense debuffs on katana, accuracy debuffs for dark melee, disorient/knockback on martial arts, and slow on spines, claws doesn't. Our supposed advantage is lower endurance usage and fast recharges, though the damage is low enough that all other sets deal more damage per endurance (DPE) and many of our attacks (Slash, Eviscerate, Swipe) have extremely long animation times, making us do less attacks over a period of timethan other sets, especially when things like hasten and recharge enchancements are taken into effect.
As far as spines go, you'll be great at dealing AOE damage and taking out large groups of minions, but not as good as dealing with single enemies like bosses or archvillains as some of the other sets (IIRC Martial Arts is considered the best for single target damage). However, the 100 xp you get from multiple minions is the same as the 100 xp you get from a single boss.

But if your group agrees to not break sleep effects... You're the biggest showstopper out there, with eight different ways to completely prevent a mob from acting. That is, Hold, Sleep, Confuse, AE Hold, AE Sleep, AE Confuse, Terrify (Fear) and Telekinesis (toggle hold). Only one of their powers isn't a mez of sorts.
Of course, the drawback is flexibility... You're crowd control, and only crowd control. Illusion, for example, has the best invisiblity buff in the game. Most others have pets, and different kinds of powers.
In spite of this specialization, I still think a mind controller is damned well worth the trouble. They can solo as well as other controllers, though they won't deal as much damage as say, fire ones. Or maybe they can, with a well-placed confuse. From what I saw, Confuse actually gives you full exp now, so long as you deal damage, I believe. Now, since I'm fairly clueless about Scrappers: is it worth bumping Stamina down 2 levels to take Build Up before? Should I slot Sting of the Wasp and Divine Avalanche more, and earlier? What about Taunt and Stealth, am I better off with an ancillary power pool? If it's any help, I'll mostly be soloing/duoing most of the time, with sometimes groups of up to 4.

I'm counting on end reducers on attacks to keep me going constantly instead of dealing more damage per hit. This is probably just a temporary version, in regards to a few powers. Namely, I don't know how useful Build Up is, but I couldn't case it before that... Okay, I have two pieces of advice for this build.
First of all, ditch Divine Avalanche. You'll get all the defense you'll ever need from Invincibility, and without invincibility, the defense gained from Divine Avalanche is insignificant. Divine Avalanche is paltry damage, only a little better than brawl. Instead, get swift, then either move your other fitness powers up one and get Build Up at 22, or get Buildup where you would have gotten swift originally and leave the others at their current level.
Second, I recommend you AVOID taking taunt, ever, and instead invest in the Body Mastery Epic Power Pool. Focused Accuracy is absolute love, and conserve power comes in very handy.
Also, get build up sooner than you do now. Doubling your damage for a few attacks (read: Lotus Drops and Flashing Steel for some sweet sweet AOE damage once you've gathered things with Invincibility) is a beautiful thing. Sakkra fucked around with this message on 05-23-2005 at 12:55 PM.

You do a special mission at level 20.
You can also get a permanent particle effect at level 30, IIRC.
The Canadian Adonis
Ice/Rad Controller ( I want Ice Slick )
Also, if you put more recharge reduction in Jack Frost, you can reach 3-4 of them out at any given time. Better than them dealing slightly more damage, yes? Asha'man fucked around with this message on 05-23-2005 at 09:06 PM.
Oh, and the closest thing to /who is /search, which brings up the interface for looking for groupmates... You can select archetypes, levels, names, etc with it.

I was under the (false?) assumption that there's a cap on how many enemies count for Invincibility. Either way, I'm not sure herding'd be much beneficial when only duoing, and for whenever I wouldn't be herding (I.E.: bosses), I wouldn't mind the 20% (supposedly) defense bonus... Not to mention Invincibility isn't coming for a long time. I'll respec after that if I find it useless, I guess.
Of course you can do whatever you like, but trust me, divine avalanche on its own is not enough of a defensive boost to make any difference in a fight. You might get one out of five melee attacks to miss you, and that's it. As for invincibility, there is a cap, but it's somewhere around 6 or so people.

From my understanding, there are two caps on defense. One is what you can reach on your own via things like Tough Hide, Invincibility, SR powers, etc, and the second is from external buffing. The first cap varies between classes, and a scrapper won't have as high defense as a tanker with the same powers, though I'm not 100% sure. I do however know this is true of damage resistance, as an invuln scrapper's cap is 75% res, whereas a tank's is much higher (I want to say 90 - 95%, but I don't have the exact tank numbers).
Defense-wise, there isn't much I can add. I wanted to take Stealth, but couldn't case it somewhere before L40+

Asha'man obviously shouldn't have said:
75 for scrappers, 90 for tankers... This puts my physical resists at 72% without Unstoppable... Unless they changed it, hasten still needs 6 slots, and 6 slotted AM still gives a 5 second recharge.
75 for scrappers is right, but tankers have 95. There are 2 different defense caps, resistance, and actual defense. These are also the same for tankers and scrappers.

By themselves, yes. But both at once, AM and Hasten accelerate each other enough to make the 6th slot unnecessary.
Any defender, properly played, can make an already good team nearly unstoppable. Don't buy into the hype that healing is the only thing that defenders are good for. I've been in groups that would have wiped if our defender was a healer instead of a buffer or debuffer.
