If you are a born-again Christian or part of some other doctrinal dogma (like I used to be), then none of this really applies (although many hard core Christian sects still think drinking is ok.) If you sound like a public safety announcement all the time, I think you separate yourself socially from the large swath of society that helps make this country great. If you go to any mainstream University you will be hard-pressed to find cool people who don't have a drink on occasion or who don't have sex on occasion.Even the hardcore geeks that I knew at UMass/Amherst had sex (or wanted to) all the time.
I guess I'm just disturbed that the youth on this board sound like officials from the government when it comes to fun stuff. Growing up is about trying things out and seeing what you like. Dismissing it out of hand without even trying it is.....well sad. Mind you I'm not talking about extreme measures (like cocaine or heroin, or playing chicken with a train.) Having a drink with a friend, having a night of naughty (safe) fun, and yes even smoking a j and watching the simpsons, I think your missing out if you don't at least try it. But I would agree that at 15, you probably aren't ready for it.

Being social with real people and letting your inhibitions go is a very important part of learning who you really are.
Good. You can do that without booze.
It's all in your head. Someone really shy and reserved like me has come to understand that and has made progress in the right direction.
And some inhibitions are good.

But all you've done so far in this thread is prove the "sXe" people's points about why drinking is bad. You're sixteen years old and your life already revolves around how drunk you're going to get tomorrow night. What would you think of a man that grew up never questioning what he was taught? What would you think of someone who still believes in Santa Claus, and the Easter Bunny, and that children come from Cabbage patches?
At some point in your life, you must question what you know, and you must test what you are. Loosing your inhibitions is a big part of that. You'll understand when you're older.

Experienced at what, Blindy? Sex? So what? From what I've read, you're also more experienced at heartbreak and not knowing enough about the opposite sex to get them to stay with you except for meaningless flings, likely because you're too shallow to think about anything but the sex....while I am about to spend the rest of my life with a woman I've never slept with because she's worth waiting for, and will make me happy even when I'm old and possibly toothless. But you're more experienced. Great job, slapnuts.
Experienced at what? Doing drugs? So you're a felon! Grand for you!
Experienced at what? Alcohol abuse? So you're probably halfway to alcoholism, and will never be able to make a girl laugh at a party sober, even after you are carrying a 30-day chip. Way to go. I did the alcohol thing, it was stupid and changed who I was. If I have to change who I am with booze to relax at a party and "lose inhibititons," then maybe who I am is an idiot. But again, way to go.
Or did you have a real point?
Look, you or anybody else want to tkae drugs, booze it up, or sleep around, that is your choice. I'm not here to judge you or your choices, even in Flameball. But don't pretend for one second it makes you a better person or creates a more enlightened worldview. It just makes you different. I make a point of not being preachy with my faith on this board -- why don't you do the same. Because that's all you've done here -- demonstrated a "faith" that your way of viewing the world is superior, while preaching to those of us that disagree.

This has nothing to do with being enlightened, but it does have everything to do with taking a very normal step in the path to adulthood. I don't know how you rationalize it, but i have never doubted that the first sign of a person becoming an adult is questioning everything that they belive in, and everything they were taught. Up until that point, they are not an individual or an adult, they are socially and egotistially a child. The thing about the sXe movement that pisses me off is the fact that it is encouraging children to NEVER QUESTION what they were taught, and NEVER take that step, and NEVER think for themselves on what they want to do, but blindly follow their parrents. It's another output of the media sensationalism that is, in my opinion, the single most distructive thing to the culture of the Western World, ever.

Blindy, I thought you were a decent guy with some occasional issues, and an arrogance problem. But the way you've handled yourself in this thread and others just makes me wonder. Either you are entirely full of yourself and really believe that your way is the only way, or you are just the worst person at putting forth a joke argument ever. It's got to be one or the other in my mind at this point.
I wasn't saying you were a bad person, or an alcoholic, or anything else. I was just pointing out logical results of your lauded behavior that you claim is a normal requirement for full maturation. If I hit to [haha to v. too rofl] close to the mark and I offended you somehow, hey, you play the game you takes your chances. If I didn't, I applaud your luck and good fortune thus far. The outcomes I listed are not the only possible outcomes, but to claim what you've been claiming seriously without regard to those possible consequences is laughable. To claim it in jest just shows you're no good at joking around.
So either you're backpedaling to avoid offense, or you're really bad at posting in Flameball.
Which is it?

Look at your history Gyd, you say you had your bout with drinking, and even though you may regret taking it to far, would you say that if you hadn't done it, you'd still be the same person today?
No.. you dont and you never will unless they tell you. Sure there are some people out there that will blindly follow others. This goes for everything though. But overall, the vast majority do not just follow others. For the most part, there are reasons people choose the things they do.
Who is to say that you arent just following your buddies? Just doing what they are to give yourself a false sense of happiness. Since you are under the impression that all straight edges are just followers, I'll assume that you are infact just a follower.
I'd say it's different because alot of my friends are super pot-heads. I don't smoke pot. If I was a blind follower, and my friends were my influence, I'd be smoking pot, now wouldn't I?

And to your point -- the idea that bad experiences or doing things that are forbidden can make one grow and learn is a fact. But the idea that someone can't learn and grow without engaging in potentially harmful behaviors is ludicrous. Disseminating that opinion is, in my view, either ill-informed or rationalization for encouraging others to engage in the same behavior, spurred on by one's own guilt or feelings of inadequacy.

Absolut Blindy had this to say about Knight Rider:
People can do what they want. Limiting their activites because they choose to maintain their childish innocence and never question what they have been taught is not the course I would recomend. If you think I am saying this because of feelings of inadequicy or regret for my own actions, I would have to say you're full of it.sXe may be alot of good things, but it's also a cop-out for people too afraid to grow up.
Actually, I said it was because you were ill-informed, guilty, or inadequate.
And I was referring to the "you must experience something to understand it and to grow and mature, regardless of its potential harm" portion of your argument. So if you want to rest on ill-informed, fine by me. A hot stove teaches, but a good parent teaches before they have to tend a burn.
I think everyone should question what they're taught -- I'm not one for automatons or "mama's boys". That does not require enagaging in potentially harmful behaviors, and to suggest so is severely flawed and erroneous. Questioning can be an intellectual exercise, and maturity can be accomplished without widespread "experimentation".
And again, your points are still fully applicable to people with a different moral compass than you, and unfairly mischaracterizes them and the "straight edge" folks who believe what they believe because of moral conviction rather than hiding right along with those who are hiding, and I sure there are folks like that. And thus, your premise is still flawed. Especially since "straight edge," I would presume, has never been taught by an authority figure such as a parent. [ 08-04-2003: Message edited by: Gydfather ]
