For michigan, you've GOTTA go with heavy metal out of detroit. Classic muscle cars. Maybe have her wearing classic 70's garb and perched on the front end of a muscle car. (a 'cuda or mustang has easy, distinctive lines. so does the camaro, although to a lesser extent. A cuda should be in either orange or purple (probably orange though) and a mustang should be cherry red). As a distant second, you could go with a mo'town look, because detroit had a big musical influence back in the day.
For new york, I think you might be well to dress her as a firefighter. I think that the towers are possibly one of the most poignant memories our of new york, ever, and they generated a lot of respect for the men and women that put their lives on the line. Paramedics, police, and espescially firefighters.

I think I may be skipping a few here and there, some just aren't as fun/functional. Plus I don't like the Texas one now, so I think that one is gonna get changed.
I think the state map in the backing was a good idea for backdrop, with watermarks over that for themes. So that will probably become a common staple.
