But wouldn't you think our group is being a little unreasonable? This is a group, yes, but it's not a clique. It's a messageboard, and a community. Shouldn't a community welcome new members as they are, rather than disliking them for trivial matters?
Who has shown open dislike? You seem to be the only one to have percieved hostility against the newbie, all I see is advice on how to fit in.
Like it or not, most people of this community appreciate good spelling, and while he might not be reamed for it, I'm not gonna read long jumbles of poor grammar, and neither is a good bunch of other people.
And why should I have to change that, just to adapt to this person?

Yes, I know this is old and has been abused numerous times. But every time somebody does it, it works.

now look, you've scared Slasher away. Buncha goddamn hippies.

You're right. This is a community of many cliques of which most share one opinion: "aol speek" must die. [ 08-23-2002: Message edited by: Asha'man ]

If he's ESL, then maybe it would impolite. However, it is more impolite to demand that a community conform to you than a community giving, for the most part, kind suggestions on how to better fit in.
We're not asking him to be a different person, we're simply telling him that he can either be considerate to his audience and make an honest attempt or accept that he will be ignored because it is too much of an inconvenience.
One must remember, it is not job of the group to accept the individual, it is the individuals job to make themselves acceptable. It's the reason one must wear clothes outside - sure, being a nudist may be a way of life, but it's not the norm for society.
My post was far too rambling for my tastes. Parcelan was able to achieve the same spirit of my post in more clear terms. [ 08-23-2002: Message edited by: Vorbis of Pie ]
A method of typing is not a way of life. A religion is. A philosophy is. Not a way of typing, in my opinion at least.
We're not forcing him to change religions or anything drastic. We're not even forcing him to do anything. We're simply suggesting ways of becoming accepted by the group.
Just as he has the right to not care about grammar and spelling, we have the right to ignore his posts. And many of us will.
All we gave was a simple suggestion that if he chooses to not conform to the group, the group will not conform to him.
It doesn't strike me as unreasonable at all.

Indeed.

I'm not denying him anything, I'm not telling him how to type. I fail to see how Slasher has been raked over coals, flamed or even harshly treated by anyone.
Nice, non-hostile advice was given on how to be accepted into this community. I don't think the suggestions were presented as a demand. Telling him he would be ignored or be an outcast to the majority is only the truth, it wasn't a threat or a flame.
It is my belief this is a silly debate.
Have a nice day.
Not yielding at all would be us flaming him relentlessly and saying: "You are not welcome unless you type properly!"
As it stands, we welcome him, but tell him that he will not be truly accepted unless he types in a manner pleasing to all the members.
We're not bending over backwards, but we're certainly not being unreasonable.
Haven't there been people here that type bad just because we have a reputation for going down heavy on it? Without that reputation, they would have no need to not type in a grammatically correct manner.
Lyinar Ka`Bael, Piney Fresh Druidess - Luclin
At this point, it seems more like we are agreeing to disagree. He can type the way he wants to, but he shouldn't expect us to read it.
There is no need to develop more tolerant behavior towards it when we are quite tolerant as it is. We do not flame him for the way he speaks, we just do not acknowledge him.
I, for one, refuse to budge on the fact that if someone wishes to speak he should speak properly. It is a matter of principle to me.

I believe it was Slasher that made it an issue, which it can be construed that he sought out to make it an issue. Even Parce, who's had a reputation for being hard against poor-spellers was more than tolerant.
There were merely kindly suggestions that spelling and grammar are regarded as good whereas no one takes kindly to lack thereof - especially if it is purposefully done.
Infact, if one were to be very anal about finding the first "flame", it would have come from Lyinar or Slasher - all though neither were really all that "flameful".
Overall, I'd say we've been perfectly tolerant.
I'm glad we were all able to have a civil discussion in this thread without it turning into a flamewar. It's been quite enjoyable, and I'd continue it, but I have a GURPS game starting soon and couldn't give it the sort of attention it deserves.
So we'll leave it there, and not spoil the pleasantness. [ 08-23-2002: Message edited by: Lyinar Ka`Bael ]

lololo Humor disclaimer, or a "Don't flame me because I said something stupid disclaimer. You know what? This is a love disclaimer. That's much better.

Well you see, there was this sleep-over party and there were no spaces left in my room, neighboring kitchen, and I think the bathroom tub was occupied. Logical decision was the deepfreeze.

And the floors were lined with sleeping bags.
Trust me, at the time, it made perfect sense.

Look at practically any other message board out there. Most of them don't care about grammar and whatnot (like Slasher). Nearly every single one of aforementioned boards type in AOL sp34k. I don't know if you just never frequent other message boards than EC, but your logic doesn't work in the real world. Unfortunately. :/
