Lyinar Ka`Bael stopped staring at Deedlit long enough to write:
But it's not universal, that's the whole point. Mog has the worst spelling and grammar I've ever seen, but Mog isn't given a hard time. Not that I think Mog *should* be given a hard time. I don't think anyone should.
But if we're going to be bitchy about it, then I think we shouldn't be selective bitchy. Or just do it to those we take a dislike to.
That's an awfully rude reception for a newbie.
Well, I hate to sound like an ass, but...
Pvednes has a very good point. Just as Slasher doesn't have to type with at least average grammar and spelling, we don't have to read his posts if he doesn't. I'd much prefer a post that seems like English (As Slasher has already shown he's quite capable of, scroll up if ya missed it) than something I can't read.
*sigh*
That being said... Welcome, Slasher!

Yeah, we did. And don't say we never gave mog a hard time about it. I mean, cripes, Mog took a LOT of crap before we finally accepted him for the way he is and it became the running gag that it is today!

Exactly.
Like, you, are, anyone, please, thank you.

But do we really have to rake the poor guy over the coals in his introduction thread? Shouldn't we be welcoming him and trying to make him feel part of the community rather than ridiculing his grammar and spelling?

I only see a few friendly requests or suggestions to type out words he wasn't.

Lyinar Ka'Bael declared jihad after typing:No, we don't have to read his posts.

Why should he even be subject to those requests or suggestions? Why isn't he allowed to type how he wants? We're all allowed to type how we want.

And I was all like 'Oh yeah?' and Lyinar Ka`Bael was all like:
Yes, he'd look smarter. But if that's how he wants to type, and he's made it clear that's how he wants to type, who are we to deny him the right to type how he wants?
Why must you deny everyone else the right to type what they want, how they want?
WHY MUST YOU DENY THEM THIS? WHYYYY?

Lyinar Ka`Bael painfully thought these words up:
I'm not denying anyone anything, Za'Yth. I'm bringing up an alternative point to be debated over. I'm questioning why it's necessary to judge a new person based on how he types, rather than what he has to say.
Then how can you say they are denying the newbie something?
Lyinar Ka`Bael, Piney Fresh Druidess - Luclin
quote:
Lyinar Ka`Bael painfully thought these words up:
The point of being an outcat was brought up. Why should the newbie be an outcast simply for how he chooses to type? That sort of typing is prevalent throughout the internet. Doesn't it foster even more intolerance to tell him "Don't do that" than it would if we would just try to accept that it's a perfectly legitimate way for someone to type?
A group is a bunch of people, with shared interests and norms.
A group doesn't need to change it's norms to include someone. Someone needs to adapt to the group to not become an "Outcast" as you say.
It's up to the someone, not to the group.
I rather enjoy a friendly, civil debate when it stays out of the realm of flames.

Enforcer Za'Yth had this to say about John Romero:

It's up to the someone, not to the group.
But wouldn't you think our group is being a little unreasonable? This is a group, yes, but it's not a clique. It's a messageboard, and a community. Shouldn't a community welcome new members as they are, rather than disliking them for trivial matters?
Lyinar Ka`Bael, Piney Fresh Druidess - Luclin
In common communication it is the job of the presenter to make the post as clear as fits the purpose. In the purpose of simple chatting - that would be so clear that it is not inconvenient for the audience.
Once this matter is taken care of - then does the process of judging and appreciating content begin. It's about presentation, and knowing that the burden is on the presenter, not the audience.
