I am horribly horribly biased towards my friends. Mainly because they're my friends. And because Azeroth lacks funney.

It's obvious that he was joking about the warez in his first post. I mean, come on, look how it's worded. He wasn't serious. That like D saying "My hand is all sliced up. Maybe I shouldn't have masturbated with that blender. Anyways, anyone know of a good topical cream for these cuts?" See the word warez and jump the gun, why don't you?
However, in that jumping the gun, Cadga did take a harmless little "You're still a kid" insult. And I quite agree that Azeroth went well over the line with that comment and link to Cadga.
At that, he lost all my respect and sympathy.
I still live with my mother. Why? Because she cant live on her own. Do I take offence at every little "Omg u live with parnts u sux omg omg omg" comment? Naw. Heck, I make most of 'em.
Azeroth posted that he downloaded warez. Something that NOBODY here likes. So he got the "OMG BAN!" comments. Its justified.
What wasnt was the shot on Cadga.
Lyinar Ka`Bael, Piney Fresh Druidess - Luclin
The first problem is your tendency to attribute motives to others, and intervene based upon that, rather than specific action. You've done it here, in classic style, by assuming others' motivation was mindless flaming.
That is both inherently insulting and logically flawed. Arguing based upon action--"You shouldn't flame him because . . . --would be a way to correct that.
The second flaw is your assumption of the role of referee. This comes across in your refusal to link reasons, expecting us to do as you say simply because you say so.
That, too, is both insulting and illogical. At least provide some basis in reason for your stance, and don't be surprised or offended when others debate them. "I don't like the way things are around here, so you should quit doing that," is not a valid reason for anyone to change behavior. Recognizing that you are a participant in the argument rather than a referee will go a long way toward fixing this issue.
Hope that better explains where I, at least, am coming from.
Finally, unless it's obviously silly, I'm not going to accept "hehe" as an excuse to say or do stupid things, or to glorify warez, drugs, racism, or any number of issues. Saying, "I fucked up my computer with warez, hehe, can you help me?" isn't a joke; it's just pathetic.

Please to be pointing out the obviously absurd part of what Asseroth posted. I can't find it.
Other than that, your analogy was right on.

The 'hehe but anyways' is indicative of a joke. Then again, maybe I just have a heightened sense of humor and can spot it easier than other.
To address your second point. I am not trying to play referee. I am a dissenting voice to what you believe the correct behavior toward Az should be. A referee calls the shots, no questions asked. My comments have been simple requests to please cease the current direction of the thread in favor of peace, but I have no demanded or ordered as a referee would. My reasoning is keeping the peace, keeping flames down, and tempers down, and just trying to alleviate the hot temperature on the boards in general.
And I think Bajah made an excellent point. I do think Az was joking, and I think it's the same as the example Bajah gave. I would whole-heartedly support your disagreement with someone who had openly admitted in a non-joking manner that he got a virus through warez. But as my personal belief, I don't see that Az has, so I cannot support that section of your disagreement with him. [ 05-25-2002: Message edited by: Lyinar ]

Actually, I thought it was a joke. I also thought the cries for banning that followed for the first few posts were also jokes, kinda going along with what he had said.
It was like the flames in this thread kinda came out of nowhere, and caught me totally by suprise.

How.... Lyinar.... uughhhhhh:
Acutally I have to disagree here, Sage. Because of the different way I read things, I saw the initial post as a joke. So the ensuing flames appeared to me (And you'll notice I said that was my impression that appeared to be given, not that that was indeed everyone's intent) to be just that, flames, and for just a simple joke, which made the flames appear to be over the top, and made gave the impression that rather than actually being upset about the first post, people were just flaming because they saw the word "warez".To address your second point. You didn't address my first point at all.
I don't object to you differing based upon your reading of Asseroth's post. The fact that you felt it necessary to assign motivation to others, and attack that is the problem.
You didn't say, "You flamed him, and that was bad."
You said, "The impression given is that people are just looking for an excuse to flame."
It's not up to you to decide what others' motives are, and to assert yourself based upon that. {i]That[/i] is the logical flaw in your approach I mentioned.
People aren't giving you the impression, as you assert; you are inferring it, which is a different thing entirely.
Feel free to discuss and disagree with actions, but lay off the motives, which you can't possibly know.
You've also pretty much proved my point about trying to be referee. Feel free to take a side and argue it, but it's not your place to insist others desist simply because you don't like the behavior. Argue a point, but don't try to tell others it's for their own good. It's not logical, and it's guaranteed to piss them off.
Worse, there's nothing to debate. Since you haven't given any reasons, you've taken the discussion immediately into the realm of, "Is too!" "Is not!" which is never good for a conversation.
Rather than play mom, it'd be better simply to say what you think and why. Take a side--don't try to put yourself above everyone else.
Hope that clarifies what I said earlier.

He said "it was a joke," while not denying its truth. I got the impression he was serious about the warez, but thought the situation funny . . . then couldn't understand why no one had any sympathy.
Further, as someone said, the initial "Ban him!" posts were just as joking.
Point to where he said "I don't do warez" instead of simply whining no one laughed at his "joke." Then you can tell me I don't read well.

No warez. No serials. No cracks/cracking programs. Anything that can be used in software piracy or other illegal software activities will result in a ban. Same goes for abusing programs like mailbombers, forum and usenet flooders, and email harvesting bots. This goes for actual links to offending material, bragging about offending material, and offering offending services.
Funny, he never made it clear whether he was bragging about the offending material, or just joking. He still hasn't cleared it up, so we can only assume the worst. Therefore, he has commited a bannable offense.
Ambiguities are not something you want to place around things that can get you banned. If making a joke about warez - make DAMN WELL SURE that EVERYONE knows it is a joke.

Whereas I agree with you, half the people who read his first post could tell he was only joking and then his "it was a joke" reply was to reinforce that, as well as informing those that couldn't tell that it was, indeed, a joke. However, the damage had been done by too many people seeing the word 'warez' and immediately assuming he'd be stupid enough to admit to using warez to not be able to tell he was kidding.

Take advantage. I did.

Actually, your earlier analogy blew goats. Masturbating with a blender is so obviously absurd it has to be a joke. There's nothing obviously absurd about Asseroth's post.
Further, he did not clear things up with a clear statement like, for example, "It was a joke. I don't download warez, so that couldn't have killed my computer."
"Maybe it was a joke," is hardly a bold statement of contradiction.
Finally, your continued assumption that anyone who thought he was serious is stupid, and simply reacting to the work "warez" like some mindless idiot is offensive. It takes quite a charitable reading to assume that was a joke, especially given his later failure to deny the substance of what he said.
"Maybe it was a joke," indeed. Maybe it wasn't, and he's just covering his ass. A simple "I was kidding--I don't do that," would have solved the entire thing.

That's where you said everyone mindlessly keyed on the word "warez" and jumped to unwarranted conclusions. Dress it up how you will, it's you not only telling the rest of us what we were thinking, but that we were stupid to do so.
There are two ways to read his statement, obviously. I think the evidence points more to the way most of us are reading it. That conclusion is further bolstered by his half-assed and vague not-quite-denials.
If it was truly a joke, no "maybe" qualifier was necessary, and had he simply not known the severity of warez offenses, he should have come forth with a real denial. Those are rather decisive factors in my mind.
And, please, answer the entire post in the future. Quibbling with individual items does not make your point; it merely drags the conversation down into the weeds.
