MGS2, GTA3, GT3, VF4, DMC, FFX, DoA2(Which I've never played and know nothing about, just putting it on the list because everyone else did :P).
XBox has Halo, which is coming out for comp eventually anyway.
Tough choice there. :P

Best. Quote. Ever.
Anyway.
My local EB-clone has an Xbox stand, a PS2 stand, and a Cube stand. I have played each of the demo disks for these platforms (since I am too damned pissass poor to buy the actual systems.).
PS2.
Pros: All games are backwards compatible. Major plussage on this. WTG sony.
Can play DVDs and music CDs via it. Saves ya the cash of a DVD player, I guess.
DVD games. Notice FFIX was like, 3 discs, and FFX was like, one? DVD format = uber alles compression, bish.
Cons:
Expensive, even today. Most PS2 games are still going for at least 40 bucks, if new. Bleh. Renting is an option.
TV compatibility.. If ya havent gotten yer TV in the past 4 years or so, chances are ya prolly wont get stereo sound or the *best* video. Get a new TV first.
Memory cards for PS2 are sometimes rare.. Hell, I know that every electronics store in town has *not* been able to keep them in stock for the past six months. Dead serious.
Xbox.
Pros: DOA3. Boobs. Nuff said.
No need to buy memory cards.
Slightly better hardware.
Cons: Yes. The damned controller. It does *not* feel natural in my hands at all. Sorry, it just doesnt.
Ungainly sight. I want something to match my decor, not stand out from it.
ONO~ IT IS MICROSOFT PRODCUT/!!!~!
'Da Cube.
Pros: SSBM. It is WELL worth spending 250 bucks (200 system, 50 for SSBM) just to play this game. Trust me. Yaes.
Many decent games, including Rogue Leader, and coming soon, Metroid, Zelda, and Mario. Gotta fall back on the staples, bish.
Cheapest of all three systems. Nintendo tries to keep their products rather affordable, and I like them for this.
Decent controller. It is always a joy to hold the 'cube controller.. Uh.. Well, if a stupidass greasy fingered little bastard devil child hasnt held it before me, that is. Nintendo did some good research, and it fits all kinds of hand shapes and sizes.
Rumble feature built in to all controllers (not just special duel shock).
Cons: Cant play CDs/DVDs. Big whoop.
Have to buy memory cards.. Not as "rare" as the PS2 cards, but..
ONO~ SOEM GAEMS MIGHT BE FOR CHLIDRNE?!?!?! LIKE ADUTLS CNAT HAEV FUN WIHT KIDDEI GAEMS?!?!!?/!~?~
Eh. I presented some good pros/cons. Prolly get a dinosaur.. Whee! Your choice, 'sart. I'd go with the 'cube. Beating the shite out of link with peach is just too tempting.. Hehe..

PS2 wins "Best Controller" award. You all have to admit that. That's why I bought one of those import PS2 controller cable thingies so I can use a Dual-Shock on my Cube.
For the love of all that is good and fucking holy, WHY ON EARTH DID YOU DO THAT?!
The controller already shakes, and the damn thing has ANALOG SHOULDER BUTTONS! .. Like.. you know.. if you press it a little, it goes a little. if you press it a lot, it goes a lot. Like, oh, I dunno, an accelerator pedal?
..
..
Er. Sorry. Yer cube, not mine.

Ummm...PS2 controllers have the analog buttons too.

I take controllers apart in my spare time. And I have a lot of spare time.
Most are digital. One or Zero. Connected circut, or broken. Very, very simple.
Analog means there are hundreds of thousands of values between 1 and zero.
You are probably thinking of the analog joysticks. These are nice, and well designed. However..
The cube's controller has Nine digital buttons, and four analog imputs. Meh, just me, I like the feel of pressing a teensy bit and getting a teensy bit, rather then pressing hard and getting the same as if I was light as a feather on it.. y'know?
<DINOSAURS DELPH!!!!!>
<calls him Delph for extra effect!>
All the buttons on the PS2 controllers are analog.
There's a huge difference.
X-Box has many great games out now, and many more in the wings. It just depends what you like.
Halo is awesome.
Munch's Oddysee is hilarious.
Project Gotham is incredible.
Rallisport Challenge is fantanstic.
NFL Fever is outstanding, though some prefer Madden.
Amped is gorgeous.
And the controller is fine for adults. Only tiny girly-men need bitch and moan about it being too big.
Depends upon what kind of games you like, is all. The current crop is outstanding, and there are more on the way.
And, if you get Official X-Box Magazine, they include playable demos with each issue. Very cool way to test games.
So, if you like the annoying Japanese RPGs, go PS2. But if you're looking for something aimed squarely at an adult market, think about X-Box.
--Satan, quoted by John Milton
The X-box controller.. hmm, instead of saying big, let's say awkward. Yes. Awkward.
It has some fun games, it'll get better with time.
PS2 is good too, yo.
GameCube's gonna get better, and it has some very fun games already. Despite the children based theme, they're still fun.
Don't knock 'em till you've atleast played them for a significant amount of time.
Go next Gen systems.
PS2: Has the largest lineup of any of the consoles, but it's in the rutt of 50/50. 50% Entertaining, and 50% Crap. It's not as flashier as the other systems, and isn't as adaptable to group involvement, but it is more established. It's games are pretty enough, and for the most part fun. Plus it elimnates the need for a PSX, to pawn for extra cash, and get back space. And the Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance is a decent button masher hack and slash for two people. Oh and just for Drys, it has "bouncage" something fierce on some of the Female NPCs, and not to mention a Thong Bikini if you play the Sorceress.
GameCube: It's on par with the X-Box as far as technical ability. It looks for the most part just as good, and with some in house tricks sometimes even better. It's games are almost all, for the most par group oriented, and highly addictive, for pure entertainment vaule. Nothing exceptionally imersive, but since thats not what you want right now. It's not really an issue. Not to mention some of the clasics are makings some kick ass combacks, and it has an awesome lineup set to date. With that said however, it has the smallest lineup thus far. It is however the cheapest of the consoles, it is equally as pretty, in some cases prettier, it's games are highly addictive, if not imerrsive, group oriented, has a bright future lineup, and "Smash Brothers Melee", does indeed own all. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm, Metroid....
After all that, I sucribe to the "Own all" Philosphy. I own em all. GameCubs is my favortie, Followed by PS2.. I'm not entirely happy at wll with my X-Box.
Personally, I'm going to go for PS2 over X-Box.
Why?
DMC, MGS2, VirtuaFighter 4, Maximo, GTA3, My RPG's (Which sorta don't fit in here, 'cuz as Drys said, he's not going for those).
But right now, RPG's on PS2 pwn RPG's on X-Box.
FFX, Wild Arms 3, Arc the Lad collection, just to name a few. Which is why I'm gonna be happy with my PS2 for a long time. Plus I can play my old PS1 games, with better looks
All depends on what games look interesting to you, really.

Like I said, just because its a game that doesnt include graphic violence, breasts, and massive explosions DOES NOT mean that a person over 18 cant have fun with it.
Duh.

No. While I love most of the FF games, I will admit there is a "FF feel" to most of them. If you like that kind of game, great. If you don't, then you won't like FF no matter how spiffy it looks.

But why would you want to (play a game geared towards kids) if you can have graphic violence, breasts, and massive explosions?
You say people that think XBox games are crap just think that cause they don't like them.
But then you go on to insult Japanese RPGS by calling them annoying. You might think that, but by your own statement, that doesn't make them bad.
Don't contradict yourself

I was wondering why he wasn't getting back into this thread. Now I know why, he's busy playing games.
Of course, now that this thread has outlived it's purpose, it will continue on for several days. Yes?
I've yet to see why I should shell out 300 bucks for a game system. The one game listed that I'm interested in will come out on desktop. At most 60 bucks, let's say. 60 or 300? Let me think about that.
People griping about controllers? I don't gripe about controllers. I've yet to meet someone with hands bigger than mine. I also fail to see the legitimacy of a comment about "girly man" complaints when the fact is that a number of gamers are in fact women. And, for the record, I've yet to meet a woman with hands as big as mine. An XBox controller for them might be too big. What's comfortable for my hands might not be comfortable for people with smaller hands. So that comment was just inflammatory.
Why do I want a PS2? i like fight games. I like the fight games that PS2 has. I like role playing games. PS2 has the games I want to play, Japanese or otherwise. And before you bitch and moan about games from Japan, I want you to find one game on XBox that wasn't made with technology, training, or participation of someone of Japanese relation. Don't push that button. Influence crosses over.
You want to know what *I* think is stupid? Motion capture technology and armature controls were designed originally to allow fine-tuned control of robots. They were going to do all sorts of amazing things. And despite feasibility of it, do you know where that stuff is used? To get down the trademark moves of football jocks down for video games.
*shrugs* But at least I know it goes to all games RPG and sports and don't make stupid comments about one sort of game showing influence of a culture and not other sorts.
As for RPG's...well...you're entitled to your opinion. But if you think the sort of game someone plays bespeaks more of masculinity or maturity...then you're just plain wrong.
