Well I have both of them. Playstation 2 really has most of the good games right now, including DEAD OR ALIVE 2: HARDCORE, (wink wink) but even now the hardware is starting its "get old" stages.
Xbox has the big bag (phallus) of tricks, plus Halo (you either like it or you don't) and, of course, Dead or Alive 3. But basically, all Xbox has is Halo and Dead or Alive 3. It's going to be totally sweet when Morrowind comes out, but at this time the games are pretty blah.
On the other hand, you have PS 2. It has GTA 3, DOA 2: Hardcore, MGS 2, Onimusha, Ico, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, (which is coming to Xbox I think... I think) and Rez. (The sticky-button game. (phallus)) However, I think that must be about it for PS 2.
So if this were a few months ago, I would have gotten a PS 2, but seeing as how Morrowind is coming out soon, I'd get an Xbox. So...
XBOX

And the little "drop a coin in the underwater cup" thing needs more water, I got thirsty.
why you x-box whores ask?
simple, I have this thing called loyalty, I go with what makes me happy, and I fuggen stick to it till I cease to be happy, I'm called a dedicated consumer, nintendo made the 64, playstation came out about the same time, now, LONG was I the SNES patron, sega could suck my balls, SNES had squaresoft, and it was good. 64 however, failed to produce, especially early on, while playstation, came out with such a WIDE spectrum, from ff7 to tony hawk, pure rpg plot bliss to pure mindless button mashing bliss.
now, many of you nintendo whores will flame me for puttin down the 64
lemmie clarify, I have my 64, I love my 64, and the 3 games I have for my 64
goldeneye, perfect dark, and smash bros.
I personally HATED the zelda that came out
there was no metroid. THERE WAS NO METROID.
megaman...went playstation so really, squares only ass saving producer early on, was RARE, and they didn't even make a battletoads game, so, while I partook of the 64 gaming, sony won my dedicated consumerism
fast foreward to current gen of systems
Playstation 2, whats this, I get new games, with better graphics, dvds, AND ALL MY OLD GAMES FASTER AN SMOOTHER?!
I don't call the gamecube, the gamecube, I call it the Smash Bros. Melee Cube as that is all it is worth, or all it will probably ever be worth.
and X-box, yes, its sexy with the neon green and black, yes it has a lot of games, do I care? nnnnope, xbox has no usb ports, meaning I have to fork out shitloads of cash to not play halo spastically, but instead with a keyboard and mouse instead of a dual joystick mode, which I hate. But again, the main issue I have with xbox, is the fact that microsoft is directly butting into yet another facet of gaming it doesn't belong. They shoulda learned from Asheron's Call, not to fuck with preexisting structures unless yer gonna improve upon them with -INNOVATIVE- ideas, not just bigger hardware. Leave the gaming to the gaming companies and write your fucking codecs you two bit whores.
on a side note of reasons to not like microsoft, I own a sidewinder, a microsoft product, I run WinXP, a microsoft product, the sidewinder, is not compatable, with XP...microsoft, who didn't have to write anything new and brilliant to make it work, can't even be compatable with their own shit, do YOU really wanna buy games from people like that? really?
k, disheveled rant over

Rogue Squadron(Rogue Leader is another game that just pwns on Gamecube), Golden Eye, WWF No Mercy, and Zelda are the only games for it that I ever played that didn't suck.

1. everyone will take shots at it, its one of the side effects of being at the top
2. microsoft, may not be satan, but lets face it, they need to stick to gui OSes, and office applications, and stop trying to take over EVERY market available, you only get called evil when you do unessesary acts of wonton bastardism

Indeed it is, its also the benefit of free speech to bitch about it when you have no real power to change it. So I for one, will continue to put down microsoft untill they leave the gaming industry, which I so love, alone.

no, I don't have to, and I wont, but what does it matter to you if I say microsoft is the devil, do you in some way experience pain for it, no, you just like to flame people and now have a fancy lil excuse, eh?
I don't like microsoft, and I'll goddamn say such if I feel like it, I just find it funny that if you even hint as referencing microsoft with the underworld, people like you flip the hell out, it amuses me you really care that much
Personally. I don't really care as much as long as companies produce for multiple systems. Stretching variety over different platforms is a great way to earn income, as well as fanbase. If Microsoft will quit being asstwats, looming over Bungie and just release Halo on the PC now, they'd rake in the cash from the people that don't want to fork over the cash for an X-Box when they just want 1 game.

Nope, and I won't, but that doesn't mean that we aren't going to lose out on good games because of it.
I have no desire for a Microsoft system, so I won't buy one. However, I really like the DOA Franchise, so therefor I suffer because I won't buy the system that the game is on.
This affects me because I lose out on potential enjoyment. I accept this fact, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.
Oh, and it also means that companies that produce games that I do want to play, but won't because they do it for the X-Box are missing out on the funds they could get from me.

Why?
One of the bigger selling points of the PS2 is that it could play all the old PS games. I don't see them straying from that idea when they someday make the PS3. I forsee that all the PS systems will be backwards compatable for games. I don't know if future versions of the X-Box will be that kind.
Also, Sony has a proven record of knowing how to do the game biz. I don't turn to Microsoft for my gaming fix anymore than I would turn to Sony for my OS. If Microsoft ever catches up to Sony in this field, it will take a long time. Time that you could be spending playing some great games.
I get asked this question at least ten times every day, which is better X-box or PS2. At this point I have answered PS2 every time, right now Sony has pretty much everything in their corner. They have large number of very good games already out, backwards compatiability, strong support from developers, huge user base, and the smallest learning curve on console systems. Sony does haav some major issues, their brand name extras have been next to impossible to get since christmas, and they have some serious serious quality issues to fix. With the extras things have just been hard to come by, the EBX I work in has gotten in a grand total of 86 PS2 memory cards since Dec19 2001, and it's really really hurt. Extra controllers and the good DVD remotes have also been scarce but not to the crippling point that the memory cards have. The PS2 also has some really bad quality issues, their dvd drives tend to go bad after eight or nine months. To make matters worse they're very expensive to fix and difficult to repair. This is something Sony is going to have to address, as on average our store is currently replacing more PS2s than we're selling.
Things aren't as good on the X-box side. They have a weak game lineup and have already compiled an impressive list of missed ship dates and dud games. On the bright side the games they do have out look very very good, even though most of the games are just awful. The Xbox managed to bring out some good first party games on release with Project Gotham and Halo, but since then only Sega has put up anything of better than middling quality. If Microsoft can get more games and better games out for the Xbox it could really take off, but as of right now it looks like it's losing steam due to it's poor game library. The lack of big name titles comming to the Xbox is also a cause for worry. Right now the biggest things that I can see are PhantsyStar Online, Shenmue2, and Morrowwind. So far RPGs have been a bust on the Xbox so a lot of people have been iffy on preordering Morrowwind, and I can't see good Sega titles holding up the Xbox forever. On to other things, the controller issue is now a non issue for the Xbox. Very good third party controllers by Madcat have taken care of those who hated standard Xbox controller, also the Japanese Xbox controllers will soon be avaliable in the US. Their system quality overall has improved greatly since launch, I rarely have to replace Xbox systems these days which is good. Also, with the execption of the DVD remote, Xbox extras are plentiful and easy to get ahold of.
So which system should you buy? IMHO it all comes down to the games, and the PS2 has the win there. They have a great selection of new games avaliable like Mr Mosquito, Hot Shots Golf 3, Star Wars Racer Revenge, Fatal Frame, and Virtual Fighter 4. Not to mention a very good games like GTA3, GT3, MGS2, FFX, and DW3.
So take this for whatever you will.
