Densetsu had this to say about Matthew Broderick:
Last I heard, Verant was boasting 400,000 accounts. That's $4,000,000 per month that they rake in. This 30% increase will net them an ADDITIONAL $1.2 million PER MONTH.
Hrm, do you get Verant's bills? Most of it is bandwidth, even though they have taken many measures to reduce it. I'm suspecting thats at least 1/4 of their budget right there. Then there's the buildings that the offices are actually *in*, the equipment, the power for said equipment, the people to run basic maintenence (like replace a corroded wire, etc.), and after THEY are paid, then the employees come. An extra 1.2 mil may sound like a lot, but not when we're talking about a large company overseen by a multi billion(?) dollar corporation.

NOW it is much easier for someone who has never played EQ before to come in, level to 60, and go to ToV without EVER seeing Kael, without EVER seeing WL, or hell, even the eastern wastes, for christ's sake.

Random Insanity Generator attempted to be funny by writing:
Actually RoK introduced the "high level game". Before that there was Vox and Naggy. That was it. Balance issues asside (there will always be initial balancing issues) there wasn't a whole lot of bitching because there wasn't that much fucked up once the major balance issues were resolved
Dont foreget, there was also the Planes of Fear/Hate/Air also. Planes were very much part of the high level game. Cazic-thule was originally much harder then anything else in the game
As for the RoK complaining, in general it was a decent expansion, but you must've missed the countless threads with VP. The initial amount of problems with that "end-game" zone were many, and the complaining was extensive.
If they just put that in, Kunark'll be very much done, structurally.

The point is the fact that you *HAD* to go through to CS to get a port there at all. NOW, you do not have to. Maybe ya missed that part, eh?

How do you think everyone else used to port to CS? They all had to run through SS and get their shrine key, and run to CS to pickup their tooth as well. Until they took away the tooth requirement everyone who could get ported to CS, had already ran there once.
SoV is pretty linear. IC - EW - Kael - WL - SS - CS - SG - WW - ToV
Guess Im not sure what classifies as deep, but CS is pretty far in there.

Cripes, this is ridiculous : so you pay three bucks more per month for a game that you can practically play for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Big deal. Instead of a couple of double quarter pounders for lunch you'll just have to get the regular quarter pounder, or not get that six-pack of Dr.Pepper you've been saving up for all month.
When I was a GM, I got complaints about this all the time, that they had to pay $10 a month, but on the same token I would always be told how I should bend over and take crude comments about my sister because they're shelling out so much cash. You'll find I have no sympathy for the folks who feel they're giving up their left arm to play this game that, if they REALLY HAVE SUCH A PROPLEM WITH, THEY SHOULD JUST QUIT. So you whiners that are freaking out about this and once-again joining the "I hate Verant" bandwagon, you can go cram it up your ass till you feel it scraping on the back of your teeth. You don't like it, quit the game and then shut the hell up. You have multiple accounts and feel you're being hamstringed, delete an account to make it up or save some extra cash from your allowance, or just delete all your accounts so you can use the money for something else like a car or a home-loan or something, and once again be quiet. You folks know you would blow the money on something else if you weren't playing EQ, anyway...
So far this is one of the only statements I have seen where a person has actually thought before posting. Frankly most of you don't know dick about online games or the internet except for playing on them.
As far as I know in fact the only three people who know anything about the innerworkings of an online game are Drysart, Olethros, and Me. And they know loads more about it's current state than I do. I only worked for OSI and that has been years. But I digress. Online games cost a boatload of money to run. Bandwith and server hosting prices are going up steadily due to the overall problems in the economy. SO you have a few things working against VI here.
1: Higher populations per server = More bandwith needed
2: More zones per server = more computers per server needed and more rack space to host them in.
Now while the increase in customer base does a good bit to offset the increased bandwith cost, they still are not meeting the curve like they should.
So increased cost for them means increased cost for the players. It is basic economics. If you don't like it then quit. I will keep on playing two accounts and loving it.
quote:
So quoth Ruvyen Warblade:
No job yet, but they do give me allowance. Note that they give me allowance, meaning the cash they give me is mine. They don't just give me the rights to a portion of their paychecks as spending cash.
THEY work for that money. It is NOT yours. They allow you to spend THEIR money. Don't act like this increase is coming out of your pocket, because it isn't. You don't even play EQ anymore. The way I see it, is that you've meant to cancel your account for a while as it is, and this is just incentive to quit being lazy about doing it.
At least when my mom pays for my EQ fix, I have the maturity to admit that I'm leeching off of her.
And Delphi, you still didn't have to 'explore' to get your teeth. All it did was cause you the minor inconvenience of running from zoneline to zoneline once.
You also don't HAVE to have a Shrine Key to get from SS to CS without a port. You just have to be grouped with someone that does. This what I meant by saying I got a shrine key so I could do it without getting a port, I could do it alone. [ 03-25-2002: Message edited by: Densetsu ]

Let me clarify:
They give me general spending money. $20 every 2 weeks. They don't just pay for EQ, they actually give me $20 every two weeks. Not just for EQ, for everything.
Now, if you'd have learned some stuff about me, you'd know some stuff about my intense love of... Well, stuff. I hoard things simply for the purpose of hoarding things. I don't know why I do it, I just do it. I get stuff at every opportunity. This is why I've just recently quit EQ. A little more cash in my pocket for stuff.
Now, if I was getting EQ allowance and general spoending money, or just an EQ allowance, ti would be different. But every two weeks, my parents hand me $20. That's $40 a month. $120 every 3 months. EQ takes off $40 every three months. The number I'm looking at isn't the amount of money in dollars, but the chunk it takes out of my total cash. One third. 33.3 percent. One-divided-by-three. That leaves only $80 every three months to spend. The extra $40 may not seem like much, but it will add up. After 6 months, it's $80 saved. After a year, it's $160 saved. Et cetera.
Note: I'm going by Canadian funds here.
12.95$ a month is still a pretty decent deal.
Pretty much 24/7 entertainment.
I didn't read this entire thread.

My point is Tuk that playing a game gives you about as much understanding of how a game works as driving a car gives you the understanding of how to build one.
I named the people I was sure of at the time. Drysard worked in Dev, Olethros was a GM for VI, and I was a senior Counselor (actually on the payroll) for OSI.
I did say "the ones I know of". As far as networking etc there are others. You, Pesco, and I am sure a couple others that I can't think of right now.
Does that make anymore sense?

Hosting a web site means Jack shit. And Tech Savvy does not mean you know a damn thing about the industry. I am not just talking about working on computers. I am talking about Dev, Finance, etc. There is a lot more to it than being tech savvy. And frankly if they know that bandwith isn't cheap they should not be bitching about a minor price increase from a company trying to cover that cost.
