And as far as the X-Box goes, it's the fanciest coffee table I've ever seen.
X-box is a very good system. Its specs blow any console out of the water. I personally hope that X-Box offers more money to Square to make them put FF on X-Box because at one point Nintendo effectively told Square to piss off.
FF8 is a good game. I don't want to get into that, either.

I've been surfing google for a good 20 minutes, and I haven't heard so much as a peep about this anywhere.
The only place I heard anything at all about any kind of dealing between nintendo and square was on Nintendo.com, which said the following:
quote:
According to Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbun, the legendary game developer has agreed to develop software for Nintendo systems. Later this month, Square will set up Game Designers' Studio, a development house in Tokyo, with Akitoshi Kawazu as president."Fund Q," a special fund set up in January by Nintendo Company Ltd. President Hiroshi Yamauchi, will help finance Game Designers' Studio. The new company plans to bring out at least one game for a Nintendo system by the end of 2002.
Unfortunatly for fans of the kiddy-cube, it also said this:
quote:
No plans were announced to bring the new game to the North American market.

You seem to have mistaken "X-box" for "PC".
There are currently very few, if any, Xbox games on PC.
Your point is moot.

I hate generalizations.
Nintendo hasn't changed in all the consoles they have ever released as far as content. You like the NES Library? Of course you did, 90% of you emulate as it is. You liked the SNES Library? Damn strait, once again at least 90% of you emulate them. In fact lots of you are known for singing the praise of the SNES games you remember of old. Has the style of games in any way changed from the NES days to the NGC? No. They are the same style, same fun games that were always avaiable in the begining. Yet you all continuously label it bad that it's "kiddie" games... They are the same style of games you always played. Period. They were fun then, as kiddy looking as they were, and they are as fun now, as kiddy looking as they are. The games are not kiddy games, they are universal. Amount of firepower, blood, gore violence, what have you, is what is dictating whats mature game play? I still don't get it. The games haven't changed.
If your going to bash Nintendo for lack of, then hit the core of it. They lost RPG support, and the ones the had were a joke. But in my opinion, Square makes a lot of crap. FF3, Chrono Trigger, and Parasite Eve were the only ones I really enjoyed, they others were just, eh.. They weren't the end all. They were just the MAJOR publisher of RPGs stateside, ENIX did a much better job IMHO.
Xbox has potential, but I personally dont like any of the games, the only ones they had that I concidered fun was Fuzion Frenzy, Halo (Temporarily, it got old REALLY quick).
PS2 Is still going strong, although I still never really liked the original PS so Im skittish. They have support, but as far as hardware and pushing power they are already falling behind, they just have the larger library which is holding them up. At least they arent pushing crap as much with PS2 as the did with the original.

Hook em young.
Remember, you likely played kiddy games when you were younger too. Can't expect a company to make games EXCLUSELY for one market, no matter how large said market is.
But it doesnt matter, as all the gamecube games aren't "kiddy" games. heh

Gamecube games come in three flavors: Very kiddy, kiddy, and a little kiddy.

What games did you used to play Maradon?

Did you own a SNES?
For the most part we are the same page as far as gaming and design go. Design and Content can be universal and still be concidered a good way to go.
I dont particularly care for violence and blood shed, I dont care fo sex or nudity, I dont care for sexual or racial views. I want entertainment and enjoyment.
Plus I have kids of my own now, and I have friends. So I prefer to be involved with my children when they play, as well as having fun with a group of friends.
A game can have depth, and value while not being overly violent, sexual, or purely adult oriented. As most NES-SNES games were.
Mere entertainment is nice, I'll consent to that, but it's also very base and juvenile. What I care about is intellectual and emotional stimulation. I don't find that in childish themed games.
If you like the gamecube, that's cool. I'm not trying to offend it's fans. I just don't see it as a legitimate part of the "Gaming Universe" that I intend on dedicating my life to.

Mar, when have you ever offended me. Remember these debates usually come down to just you and me in the end anyways.
What you just said of course applies to what I said earlier however, labeling Gamecube as a kiddie machine is unfair concidering what you are looking for is a more novela approach which SNES and NES RPG's and likewise accomplished. Unfortunately N64 lost a major part of its RPG support due to the ENIX didnt do well in the states. Which is sad, like I said IMHO they made the best RPGs. And because some baseless PR weenie decided american audiences didn't prefer RPG's. Wtf? He was an idiot, but whatever. And because they lost Square. Which I still stand by the opinion of them being just a corprate mongol who spouts crap yearly just to keep a cash flow on the market, because the quality of thier games ran seriously down hill. They just kept churning out sequal after sequal, blah.
But most of that is changing for GameCube. ENIX is back on board. TXO and Retro are doing some wonderful things currently. The Thornado group is also advancing nicely. And even Rare is getting in on the RPG bandwagon. So support for NGC wont be as the last incarnation. It's been less than a year. So for now I will deal with just pure entertainment, till the big guns arrive. If I want depth as soon as possible. I'll read a book.

Maradön? had this to say about Cuba:

Yep. Games like Wave race are kiddy. All Star Baseball and such are all kiddy games, right?
and you are telling me you never played a kiddy game? Well, if you DO go off your definition, ya may not have...
(note 2: this is also really, really long.)
Alright, as long as my crappy attempts at humor are being taken seriously, might as well toss in what I have.
I dislike Microsoft. I make no misrepresentations of this fact. I use their products, and dislike doing so, but continue to because it is simpler, and because (for all of the negative factors) they generally work, and work well.
I have been a console gamer since the day of the Calecovision. (that in no way makes my opinion stronger than any newer or older gamers, so let's not have a "I PLAYED THE FIRST PONG CONSOLE" note.) I grew up in love with the console industry; grew up appreciating games for gameplay, since we had nothing but pixelated sprites.
I have watched the industry evolve. I've watched Final Fantasy, a little-spoken of NES RPG, evolve into possibly the most famous (and recently, infamous) role-playing series ever...but lose sight of the soul the original games had. I've seen Contra turn into a game that hyped extreme explosions and full 3D movement...but lose sight of the FUN the original games had.
You want to know what I miss? I miss having console gaming be a niche market. I miss the days when, if you wanted to know what games were going to be coming out, you had to read magazines, because you'd sure as hell never see an advertisement on TV. I miss not seeing an ad for DOA3 every two hours. I miss developers that could make games without having to worry about if the geometrically-mapped explosions would leave photorealistic scorch marks on wall textures while simultaneously creating dynamic colored lighting. When the console gaming industry upgraded to match the computer gaming industry, we did gain a lot of potential depth and ground to build through, but we also lost what had made the industry what it was--fun, even simplicity.
"Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" is on TV right now, and is providing a fantastic example. Keanu Reeves used to be nothing. He was a gimmick actor; he didn't take the time to act intelligent--or act at all, really. But if you could lose yourself in whatever it was he was doing, you could have some fun with the role. Then, he decided that wasn't good enough; he needed to be more. And thus, he became a serious actor, and started trying to appeal to the entire world rather than that niche audience. And you know what? He sucks. With one or two exceptions, which for better or worse more or less defined a new era of the genre (read: The Matrix) he's godawful; all of his weaknesses were exposed. The fun in watching him was lost, because he stopped trying to be fun.
The console industry used to be nothing. It was a gimmick niche: it didn't try to encompass every genre of entertainment--and it didn't try to become some full, societal network. But if you could get into the game at all, you could have fun with it. Then, the industry decided that wasn't enough: it decided it had to grow. And thus, new companies began springing up (however short-lived some may've been), and games started trying to be deep and serious. And you know what? For the most part, the new, serious games have sucked. With a handful of exceptions, which for better or worse defined the new era of a genre (read: FF7, Tekken/DoA/VF/SE) they're godawful: they expose the weaknesses of consoles and game developers. The fun in playing them is lost, because they stop trying to be fun.
Here's a question I pose to the people here who've been gaming for a long time...
How many new games have given you truly memorable moments? How many of you can remember as well, as clearly, any PS2 or Gamecube or X-Box memories as well as you can the first time you beat Contra, or the first time you confronted Bowser or Chaos? How many people can remember how intimidating someone like Andross was the first time you faced him, as opposed to an exciting DOA3 fight?
How many console gamers can say they've had as much fun with their new consoles as they did with their old ones?
Before anyone asks, no, I'm not really sure what the point of this post is. Maybe I felt like taking the opportunity to rant. Who knows. It's off-topic, I apologize. Ignore.
-Carl, who's going to go stare at his dust-covered NES now.
FF:Unlimited doesnt look like its going to be a kiddy graphics game, but maybe a "mature anime" type graphics game, if ya know what i mean.
But yeah...lets hope we get SNES FF ports to GBA.

My most memorable gaming moments?
Running into a Goomba when playing mario. Thought it was a 1up mushroom! Back when I was 5. I still remember this.
Beating Zelda, when I was 6. I saw the game at a friends house. I loved it. My mom bought it for me. I remember the fight with Ganon. IT was awesome.
Very few, if any games, nowadays are memorable. But Really, we have to ask ourselves, is that because we have seen and done it all in gaming, or because they are just unmemorable?

Hey I wasn't bashing nintendo at all, I still play my SNES from time to time. Super Mario world rocks, Chrono Trigger was great too. I own both the PS and SNES versions, I think the SNES one is a hell of alot better, forget the anime, though it is shiny. It's that nintendo is geared more towards the younger audience. Which is fine.
D'ya remember Donkey Kong Country? Or more specifically, do you remember Cranky Kong? "In my day, we only had two frames of walking animation! Now look at this; see my beard waving? Waste of frames, if ya ask me..." That's what a lot of zealous players sound like these days.
Before I continue, I must emphasize that I am not listing Leopold or anybody else here amongst those zealous people!
So anyway, the old school phenomenon is really colouring our opinions on new and old games.
To use an example that a lot of us are probably familiar with (although Bloodsage will hate me for it ), I turn to the FF series. Let's not mince words: FF7 is vastly superior to FF2/4j** on all fronts. Story, battle system, characters, graphics... oh, that's not to say it's perfect or anything. The breakneck pacing of the story really brought the game down as a whole. But overall it's just plain better than Cecil and company's shenanigans.
However, a lot of people will insist that FF7 blows in comparison to its predecessor. And I'll tell you why.
It wasn't the same.
People just don't like change, in anything, really. It's stupid, but a fact of life. If one thing is different from some other thing, you'll hold that against the other thing, probably without realizing it.
I used to dislike FF7 because I kept comparing it to FF3/6j, my first console RPG. It's still my favourite, I think. But eventually, I learned to disassociate myself from nostalgia, and form my opinions on games based on their individual merits.
That's something that a lot of people need to learn to do.
* I really didn't want to use that word, but I couldn't think of a good synonym.
** For those of you not "in the know," that's the one that was originally called 2 in the States. Hence, 4j, or "4 in Japan." And similarly, FF3/6j, or "6 in Japan."
My first rpg was ff, waaaay back in the day.
and I friggen loved it.
and I've been impressed with each square release (except 2) not because I compare them with other square games, but because I compare them with what came out with it at the time, and so far, square has been MILES ahead of everyone, ffx proves this again, no other playstation2 game has graphics that touch square, any game company that made enough to make its own major motion picture studio, then release said movie is obviously on to something, thats enough about my glory to square
as for nintendo gamecube, I see ups, I see downs, its a gaming system designed for kids, I fail to see what the hell is wrong with it so long as you accept that fact, there are some titles adults will want to play, but overall, the vast, VAST majority is geared for a younger generation, I think perhaps the problem most older gamers have is the influence these games are giving, when I was of pokemon age, I played final fantasy, I then saw pokemon, when I have a kid, rest assured my NES will survive, and it will know the glory of FF
its like comparing barney to sesami street
one is crap drool meant to program you towards the life of a robot, the other is a multifaceted approach to learning, I grew up on SS, my kids will never know barney so long as I draw breath
but its the same for comps, we get sick of the crap they're putting out because the kids gurgle at it, if they put out a genuinly INTELLIGENT and challanging game, we the gamers of today would probably herald it and promote it, but dribble like pokemon is not going to earn our respect
end rant.
