This is a circle arguement. I could make a point here about most records now being ten songs of shit, when you only want one of them. The one that, most likely, isn't released on a single. It's just pointless, this entire thread has been pointless, aside from how damn funny it is.
If I like a song well enough, I'll buy the CD and take my chances. Fifteen bucks doesn't mean that much to me.
What, exactly is your argument? That if you want something, you should just be able to steal it if it's not packaged conveniently?
"Well, officer, I only wanted the tank of gas, but it was stuck to this car . . . so it's okay if I just take the whole thing?"
And, frankly, I do consider myself a better person than anyone who thinks it's okay to steal whenever they want something they can't or won't afford. Deal with it. At least I can argue that my chosen ethos doesn't undermine society or prey upon others.

And when have you ever known me to give a flying fuck whether anyone else cared when I voiced my opinion? Last I checked, this thread was asking for opinions.
As usual, though, those whose ideas are logically indefensible are attempting to shout down those actually making a point. It's fine to disagree. Even to disagree on basic principles. But try to find a better argument than, "Fuck you!"
That's no fun at all.

Well, I dunno about these guys, but I'll argue that, while MP3 trading is illegal, it is almost unstoppable. I refer you to my posts on page 4 for my principal points.

You guys and Ocy and a slew of others have a REALLY big problem with coming into threads and saying things being discussed are stupid and pointless just because *you* don't feel like arguing them.
Don't wanna argue them, then don't post on the damn thread. Simple as that. Nobody cares what you think is pointless and it really serves nothing to inform the whole board repeatedly about it.

I don't see that as a defense of theft. Every thief will tell you he didn't think he'd get caught, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be prosecuted.
I'd reply, but I honestly have trouble understanding your logic. International terrorism is impossible to stop completely. Should we quit bitching about it and make it legal and acceptable? How many years did it take to catch the Unibomber? Should we have stopped, and made the behavior legal?

Well, I guess you're getting a taste of what people feel when you tell them to shut up cause they don't have a right to express their opinions on a subject since you've deemed it closed, oh Mighty Debate King.

I think if the music industry stopped seeing file sharing as their enemy, they could turn it around and make a profit from it. There was talk of making Napster a subscription service at one point. Now, while they would lose people that didn't want to pay, others would be more than willing to pay to have access to new bands, hard-to-find things, or just that one song off a CD that they liked. I pay $10 every month to play in an imaginary world where I kill things and chat and go on quests. I wouldn't mind pay for easy access to songs that others have available.
That, like many other ideas, including Len's about stricter laws, just isn't practicle or possible.
If you charge people for something, or shut something down, another free source will spring up. It's inevitable.

OK, I'll try to explain. What the hey, I might actually make sense! (fat chance)
You say that MP3 trading is theft, and theft is wrong. That's true. It's also, in principle, illegal. However, the illegality is not the question. The question is: can it be stopped?
You place terrorism on the same plane with MP3 priacy. However, that doesn't mean we should devote the same resources to combating it that we do terrorism, because they are fundamentally different. They're both wrong, yes, but they have differing aims and, as such, require different attention.
So, is it worth it, I argue, to devote enough resources to combat the MP3 problem as we do (for example)terrorism? I don't think it is.
That help? *looks hopeful

Sure occasionally a person would read a book and then buy it but these people were few and far between.Over time hundreds of people would read these books. These people were therefore in a way stealing from the writers and publishers, after all why buy the book when you can read it for free just as easily. So these libarys are now loaning out free books that keep others from buying the book and helping the writers earn a better profit for their work.

I thought I said this already.. Pirating an Ebook is much more wrong than a single MP3.
Overall, more work goes into a book than a single song, and you don't pay for a single song. You pay for ten to a dozen of em.
You can also get into the point that a music album, in general, will sell more copies than your average book. There's a much bigger demographic for music than books, sadly.
This thread has turned into a flame-fest, is completely pointless, and has degraded from an intelligent conversation to a large mass of incomprehensible arguing that's got pretty much the same weight as "NUH UH, YOU STUPID POO POO HEAD". A lock would be VERY useful right now.

Now what if you were trying to make music for a living, and you got jack for royalties because everyone stole your albums rather than buying them? And your record label dropped you because CD sales were abysmal?
