Thank you, KaL, that summed me up perfectly. If it weren't for used part donations post-Christmas from a few of my wonderful friends here, I wouldn't be playing EQ at all. I miss my characters already, since I can't even play without SoL thanks to the fact that my computer can't run DX8.1 3D.

They shouldn't be at all. In fact they should be amazed that Verent has maintianed as much backward compatibility as they have. Wehn EQ was first out it had 3dfx support if I rember right. the game is OLD SoL is probblay not half as good as it could be becuse they are still maintinaing backwards compatibilty. But they have to draw the line somewere.
Nor does Microsoft has any care about supporting an old OS When they have 3 versions that are newer. Bitch and complain all you want Microsoft is a COMPANY they make money, they make a lot of it. And personaly I am happy they dosn't support it. Why, becuse if they maintianed absoulte backwards compatibilty, technolgy would stagnate. Call me an ass but I don't belive anyone should cater to the lowest comman demonitor.

It doesn't matter. Bottom line is that people are screwed out of a game they loved to play, all for the sake of having an older machine. Now they are forced to suffer from the "upgrade or fuck off" mentality?

Try putting yourself in the shoes of the people this affects. They put just as much time and money into the game as the next person, and now its "Oh, sorry..our game is too good for your machine. You are the weakest link.. goodbye"

Why? Because that would be DOWNGRADE. Verant takes many big steps forward with SoL and then is expected to turn back.

VI had two options to them.
A) Keep the engine the same for old users who don't have SoL, but put a new engine in for new users. And having two separate engines for one game = leaving that game vulnerable to thousands of bugs that arise from the two engines clashing, probably more vulnerable to cheating (It's just a thought, no proof as of yet), etc.
B) Not upgrading the engine at all. Same old models, textures, etc. Which would make one of the biggest perks to SoL (that one being the new models, the new textures, the overall improved quality of the game) null and void.
C) They could upgrade the engine for both, try to minimise the blow as much as possible for older users, and accept the fact that it's going to stop things for some of those users.
They chose C. The other two options both seem, to me, worse than the one they chose.
Yes, I feel sorry for those who are left behind. Why? A friend of mine is one (Stormy being that friend). But that friend also has good friends that are doing what they can to help him out. Mort's sending him a new Video Card and Mobo, me and Mort are sending RAM... we're trying to get our friend up and going with the game he enjoys, so we can play with 'im some more.
So while yes, VI is going to take shit, I think they took an acceptable risk, and though it's sad some people are being left behind... well, sometimes that happens.
KaL, after 10 years of having that car, that the parts to make it work again will cost more than the car is worth. What do you do then? Scrap it and buy a new one. My old 1986 Nissan 200SX that got totaled, fixing it would have cost more than it was worth. So it was junked (Sucked, but it was necessary). After time, older things start getting worn down, worn out, and eventually replaced. PC's are a little faster than cars...
OTOH... Just be glad that EQ is a luxury, and not a necessity. If a 16 year old car breaks down, and you're on a student's budget, and need that car for work, and can't afford a new one, you're up a creek. If EQ breaks down and you can't afford to get it fixed anymore... well... at least it's something that can be lived without.
Of course, people who are saying 'oh, it's just your fault for not being able to afford a new system. Sucks to be you' are just assholes and not worth the time to argue with. People who say 'I'm sorry, I know it hit you hard, and I wish I could help' are at least polite and not acting like little spoiled children. If someone's gotta give up something they love for reasons they can't help, it only makes you look like a complete and total dipshit to laugh or insult them for it (*COUGH*Maradon*COUGH).
And of course, there's people who say 'I'm sorry it hit so hard, but we're your friends, so we'll try to help...', well, I'm happy to be helping my friend in what small way I can
