I'm just pointing out that 98SE is extremely cheap anymore. $66 for unopened Win98SE AND a two gig hard drive! Most of that $66 is probably the hard drive.
My point was that it makes no sense to claim that Verant is making you choose between playing EQ and fulfilling real-life obligations by forcing you to upgrade to Win98.

Anyway, right now you can go out and buy non SoL EverQuest. On the box, it says that it works with Win95 (actually, SoL's box says it too). They need to fix that, and fast.
I expect to see them sending out little stickers that are to be placed over the minimum requirements areas of the boxes to cover the old specs and show new ones. Odds are, that's the best way to do it.
Now, as for WHEN they announced what would not work with it anymore: I got the impression that they were trying till just about the last minute to make it work with 8.0/Win95, but just couldn't do it. If so, than we at least owe Verant a "Thanks for trying". Plus, we can hope that hope that some of the lag/framerate suckage in the new zones will go away as they get rid of some of the extra code that was supposed to make up for the older/lesser systems (please? *whimper*).
I may not know Zephy as well as some of the others here, but I do have a RL friend that can no longer play EQ. He's saving up for the needed upgrade, but for the moment he's having do without. He's looking forward to seeing a better look to the game, but finds doing without sucks. I feel for him, and Zephy too. 
I'm sure those who are running on WIN 95 are also very upset about not being able to play because of DX8.1, and having to update to WIN 98 just for this....
BUT...I know people who are going to have to spend over $100 just updating their video cards and memory/space, too, in order to play this game. . .That's really awful, I think, considering the majority of people don't buy a new computer or update our systems every year to keep it with the latest technology. My computer is about 2 or 3 years old, and I think it *JUST BARELY* meets the requirements for SOL. (We'll see in a few days). . .It's great that the new game looks awesome, but it sucks that it's requirements are so high - and even with a decent video card - it still screws up and lags, or so I've heard. . .

Can't expect to play new games or expansions on a 7year old system. Also can't expect developers to design their games to be advanced enough to cater to the majorities likes, yet still make it useable on a sub-standard PC.
I'm only sticking up for my friends and those that cannot play the game any more. My actions in this thread could have remained civil, however I was extremely insulted by the "fuck em" and "no pity" comments and attitudes. There are people, on this very board, that fall into that category and I'm sure they just loved seeing how others feel about their current situations.

2) The requirements for the new game are a lot higher than the original game, but it is bad form to make the original game stop working for people who have been playing it for years just because they can't afford to upgrade their computers, hardware or OS.
