I hope you're sitting down, but the AF actually did the smart thing and worked my follow-on as a Colonel from the beginning. They finally realized that the promotion rate for guys at war college was almost 100% and that they were putting a lot of time and effort into unfucking assignments at the last minute, so they just assumed (although the tinfoil hat-wearing side of me tells me they might've had a birdy from the board whispering things in their ears) the promotion and worked me a Colonel assignment. It's a pretty funny story I'll have to tell you over beers one day, actually.
The good news is I seem to be going to a high-profile, upwardly mobile job. The guy I'm replacing is going on to command a group after only 2 years there, so it's not a dead end, which is good.
