This came out of nowhere. No discussion, nothing. Just one day, "I think I'm gonna join the navy." He's remarkably focused on it, though. My parents are supportive. Really, I'll be good for him. He's generally apathetic about everything, particularly school.
Of all the things I could be feeling right now, I am, mostly, jealous. He's going to come back with stories about foreign ports and ships or whatever they have him doing. I'll just be a bit older.
Why not enlist myself? That's a very good question. I guess I just have a complete lack of confidence in my ability to contribute. [ 03-25-2003: Message edited by: Maradon XP ]
yay navy!
You could be 200 pounds, 6'7" and a total killing machine patriot, and still not feel right for it.
Or you could be 145, 6'0" and have bad acne, and go in and succeed.

Enlisting is an ok option if you have just a high school education. The Navy rocks because of their high-tech job training.
However, if I were you, I'd wait until completing college and then go in as an Officer. The payrates for an O-1 (first officer rank) is almost DOUBLE that than E-1 (first Enlisted rank)
Plus people get to call you Sir and salute you
But if your single and don't mind busting a nut for a few years, Enlisting can be a great way to get the degree, then you become an officer.
since I already have part of my education, When I go off to to my Four year I am consdiering Navy ROTC, or Possibly if I can nab it , one of the delayed entry programs.

Yeah, Enlisting is a good way of getting a solid education (GI Bill rocks, yo) and a solid paycheck. Not only that, but during your service, you can apply for OCS (not sure if it's OCS or OTS... The Army is OCS) when you complete college
I can stand underwater. Easily.

Not to mention it would look good on a resume to have both a degree and have served.

The only problem about National Guard or Reserves is that it's mainly suited to married soldiers/sailors/airmen/marines. The payrates for reserve training is only about 10% of active duty, but you can hold a second job while you serve
Airmen? what if I really did want to fly a plane/helicopter? I am FEMALE,a nd THAT's politically incorrect.

It's a generic term, just as soldier refers to anyone in the Army, not just the Infantry.

Airpersons is awkward.
And Kek, I seem to recall that the Coast Guard gets in more firefights than every other agency but the Border Patrol...
could just be a misrecollection, though.

ACES! Another post by Kekvit Irae:
The Navy is a great career choice if you want to get your hands dirty in all that high tech stuff, but be prepared to spend upwards of six months or more underwater
The Air Force is not quite as technical, but it's a little more luxurious. Plsu you can fly in planes if you are officer ^_^
The Army (my baybee ^_^) is a great choice for those who want to go the full 20 years of military service, since not many jobs carry over to the civilian world.
The Marines is a good choice if you just wanna be a badass
And of course, the Coast Guard is for those who actually wanna save lives, not take them.
The AirForce Is a corporation in a uniform quite technical, If I remember right, compared to the other branches the AF has bit more money to throw around, they do tend to treat their people better.
The Navy is not all under water, in fact it is quite above and on the ground, the Navy is fooking huge is you ever sat down to look at it. But for enlisted I don't think any other force ofers up what the Navy does.
The only other point is the Coast Guard in Peace, is good for saveing live, but in a time of war it gets absorbed into the Navy, Quite a few Coast Guard guys are getting pulled into the active duty Navy right now.

Although I fear the Steve brand of journalism.
"The fighting is really intense out here. You can't see the sky through all the smoke. It's hard to describe how horrible it is if you're not right here. The hammer of Thor falls and lights the valley with smoke and thunder, and the beasts do wail, and all lift their heads and cry in exultation at the awakened storm and fury. I really want a hot chocolate."
Looks damn good on a resume.
