The loss of DOA3 is pretty big though, it probably has something like the "jiggle" effect from DAO2:hardcore. Which is very good.

DOA 3's a damn pretty game, but it's not all that different from DOA 2, except for a couple additional characters.
For finer points, I could waste my time trying to come up with a good explanation of why I think that the PS2 is a better choice than the X-Box, or I could go with the easy route and tell you to go check out the Gord's say on this.
But if you need a coffee table as well as a game system, go for the X-Box. 
For now, though, I really don't think there's all that significant a difference in the entertainment a system is able to provide now. The only (real) differences now lie in the pretty-ness capabilities.
Of course, if you want to argue system specs, I won't deny that the X-Box is almost undoubtedly the better of the two... I still say PS2 for entertainment.
Jeez, I'm rambling...

Gamecube is the cheapest and is the best fun for 4 players.
Sony and Nintendo are already planning on their next systems 'cause Microsoft's gonna start upgrading X-Box. This'll force the other companies to release new game systems within the next 3 to 4 years.
So, buy X-Box now and pay for upgrades soon; or buy PS2 and then buy PS3 later.
Oh, and in case anyone's wondering;I've had a PS2 since the day it came out. (Reserving it nine months in advance helped!) No X-Box though.
