Also, under Ronald Reagan, the share of the income tax burden borne by the top 10 percent of taxpayers increased from 48.0 percent in 1981 to 57.2 percent in 1988. Meanwhile, the share of income taxes paid by the bottom 50 percent of taxpayers dropped from 7.5 percent in 1981 to 5.7 percent in 1988.
Reagan is pretty much the ultimate socialist I guess. Fucking Republicans taking all my money and giving it to shiftless minorities!! I'm sure Joe the Plumber would have liked to have a word with him!!

Just to be clear, you should realize that's because rich people made more money and poor people made less money under Reagan. Tax burden has as much to do with the distribution curve of wealth among the population as it does tax rates.

Yeah, I just wanted to broadly say that if someone really believes that any progressive tax system is SOCIALIST then they sure as shit should not have voted for McCain [Razor].

Inflation, my friends. People moved up tax brackets without earning any increase in real income. Reagan, iirc, at least capped the top percentage, because some people were paying something like 105% of their income in taxes.
The poor did not get poorer during Reagan, the bottom 20% showed negligible increases in real income, whereas everyone else made more. More of the top 10% just shifted into the highest bracket (which was not indexed to inflation).

Yeah, I even grabbed those stats from an old House Republican study that was obviously in favor of his economics.
I'm just condemning people who shout that Obama wants to "redistribute the wealth" like the rich paying higher taxes is some new phenomenon

You're discussing the percentage of tax revenues, not the tax rates.
The position of republicans has always been that lower tax rates bring in greater tax revenues. It's called the Laffer Curve. Reagan cut the top marginal tax rate from 70% to 28%. When you make it cheaper to conduct economic activity, more of it will be conducted, the economy will grow, and the rich will pay more money to the government.
Obama's plan is to increase tax rates, which is the opposite of what Reagan did. It will cause the opposite effect. Businesses will recede, the rich will pay a smaller amount of money to government, which is precisely what happened when Carter did the exact same thing, and FDR before him.
What you just stated here isn't a defense of Obama's tax plan, it's empirical proof that it won't work.
The fastest, most fair and effective way to put more wealth into the hands of the poor is to cut taxes on the rich.

Yes, that's correct.
Redistribution of wealth doesn't become socialism once it passes a certain threshold. There aren't degrees of socialism. Socialism is the belief that it is right to use force of arms to take money from people who have created it and give it to people who have not.
And it's a pretty big deal if it is socialism, because socialism is a dysfunctional ideology that is fundamentally incompatible with the human race, has always failed, and always will fail. Maradon! fucked around with this message on 10-24-2008 at 06:03 PM.

You are saying that every politician who is not against the abolishment of welfare and social security is a socialist then.
You are saying Obama and McCain, and 99% of Congress are socialists, and that we are already a socialist country.
That is not a mainstream opinion in public or academic circles, I don't believe. Zair fucked around with this message on 10-24-2008 at 06:25 PM.

Almost, but not quite. In order to qualify as a socialist, a politician would have to agree with the use of welfare and SSI programs as a deliberate effort at "equalizing" society. I put equalizing in quotes because, as Reagan demonstrated, socialism doesn't do any such thing.
Obama and Biden both have stated in plain english that the intention of their economic policies is "fairness", and so they qualify as socialists.

McCain actually opposes the use of SSI and welfare in the way I described above. I know because I have a leaflet from an Obama door to door campaigner that says so.
Obama has already planned another 1.3 trillion in new spending. That's in addition to Bush's disastrously enormous domestic spending. He's simply not going to be able to get that from these evil rich people who make more than a quarter million a year. The rich are uniquely positioned to avoid taxation. They can just stop working, they can buy tax free municipal bonds, they can invest overseas. Zair's own numbers prove it, higher rates equals lower revenues and top brackets swing the most of all.
If Obama can't finance his New New Deal on the backs of producers, do you really think he's going to not spend?
Then, not only will you have to worry about your company downsizing you because the shareholders don't think your present scale is worth the investment in light of the new taxes on the company, but you'll also be seeing less of whatever paycheck you do get.
And yes, this has all happened before. Maradon! fucked around with this message on 10-24-2008 at 06:46 PM.

I'm trying to tell you that in order to be a socialist, one must believe in the redistribution of wealth by force. Disagreeing with it, but tolerating it isn't good, but it's not enough to qualify you for The Red Club.

No, based on his voting record he doesn't tolerate it, he supports it.
And based on your standards for socialism, almost all of America support the continuation of numerous socialist policies.
Basically, you set your standards for socialism stupidly high, because socialism is a negative buzzword in America and this way you can label people you don't agree with very negatively.
it is pretty transparent =/

Look, this is a really silly tangent and I'd rather discuss why redistributing wealth is wrong.
John McCain might be a socialist, I don't know because he's never given any clear indication. Voting for a medicare increase or whatever he did that you're thinking of doesn't mean you agree that government should take money from one person and give it to another. Voting for a politician because you're worried about your retirement because you were counting on SSI and didn't start a 401k likewise does not make you a socialist.
Justifying a capital gains tax increase in the name of "fairness", makes you a socialist. Believing that it is the role of government to "spread the wealth around" makes you a socialist. We know Barack Obama and Joe Biden are socialists because they have given us clear indications that they believe in socialism.
It's like the difference between an atheist who shouts "JESUS CHRIST!" as an invective, and a devout christian.
