Just an EQ subscription from what I can see. Luckily, due to the way it's handled, I can just install what I've got instead of having to buy one of the packed deals to get the 7 or so missing expansions.

it's not like the content in old EQ was all glorious and fantastic, it was pretty fucking gay and everyone cried about it constantly. when people bitch about wanting old EQ back, they actually mean they want a new game that doesn't suck balls and is played similarly to how EQ was back then.

not all of us are looking to go back to old eq

some of us are using the server so we can slide into the new stuff that was added to the game, instead of being dropped into it once we tried the game again

a lot has changed in eq since world of warcraft, and that's my reason for wanting to try the combine server

time to actually hit the level cap bishes

and people cry about everything, just because people cry over shit doesn't mean the game sucks. look at world of warcraft for example. ~6 million subs and people are bitching on the forums constantly

And if they ever put another package featuring more expansions later on for $20, well, thats some money saved right there.

I honestly have no idea why people would go back to the times of having all of one frog per person to level on in lguk. Also a timer on the expansions really defeats the purpose of the server.
Life... is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless, perfunctory gift that nobody ever asks for. Unreturnable, because all you get back is another box of chocolates. You're stuck with this undefinable whipped-mint crap that you mindlessly wolf down when there's nothing else left to eat. Sure, once in a while, there's a peanut butter cup, or an English toffee. But they're gone too fast, the taste is fleeting. So you end up with nothing but broken bits, filled with hardened jelly and teeth-crunching nuts, and if you're desperate enough to eat those, all you've got left is a... is an empty box... filled with useless, brown paper wrappers.

All the timers are supposed to do is prevent people from opening an expansion too quickly, just in case they really underestimated how fast players can complete the goals of each game era.

They're also in place to prevent anyone who uses hacks to kill things that they shouldn't be able to from opening things far faster than what would normally be possible.

Exactly. Cause we'd see what we see whenever an expansion comes out. The guys who play all day, every day come through and chew through the entire thing. The next expansion would be open in a week or two, and they'd start working on that one and open it, and those who didn't chew through the content would be stuck in the same situation they are on Live at a low level with tons of expansions out and tons of levels to get.

Timers on this server are a good thing.

Exactly. I figure the first unlock (to open the first 3 planes) will require 2 weeks to have passed, which is a decent amount of time, before they'll open up.

The timers for the unlocks aren't necessarily there just to prevent progress, they're there just in case something happens that they don't expect, and someone manages to go from expansion to expansion in a week's time.

Sorry, but I'm not sure what you're getting at here.

Are you trying to say that we're trying to relive our original days in EQ with this server? I mean, *I* know that you can't relive the first moments of amazement when you first play a deep new game. That's a no-brainer.

But that's not my reason for wanting the Combine server. I just want to be on a server where I'm not dropped into tons upon tons of new, game reshaping, content, and a server where I can actually do the content of each era, without another expansion coming along that makes the game easier.

I don't think I got past level 40 on a single character until Velious-ish, and didn't get any characters close to 50 until after Luclin. Never hit the level cap, and I started shortly after Kunark. By the time I got to 50, it was no longer a challenge to do so. It's still less of a challenge now, but it's still something I'd like to do: Finally hit the level cap in EQ.

And this server, to me, seems like the most challenging and more fun way to do so.

Sorry about bumping an old thread, but figured anyone who is interested in the Progression servers would like to see this:

quote:
Maddoc on the EQ Progression Beta forums:

Hey everyone,

In the last few years, much has changed in the world of EverQuest, which is a great thing for all of us -- It's what keeps us all interested in the game and enjoying the time we spent playing.

In developing a server like this, we have to be mindful and aware of those changes such that we can make an informed decision on what course of action to take when addressing any issues as they come up. As you might imagine, there are years worth of content to be aware of, enough so that some of the changes require a lot of time.

The change that I'm about to explain makes huge strides towards dealing with what you guys feel is one of the biggest issues to overcome for this server. This same change is also why I've been largely unavailable for the last week or two. The change is not small, affecting a great portion of EverQuest and it's NPC's, nor is the change to be taken lightly, needing as much testing time as you guys are able to muster. If you have a character and haven't participated in beta for a week or two, I'd encourage you to please log in and test everything out.

With that said, the changes that have been made are going to affect a number of NPC attributes in an effort to address the power disparity between melee-classes and caster-classes in the early stages of progression on these servers. So, without further ado...

* NPC Health - This has been increased on average for most NPC's.
* NPC Armor Class - This has been reduced on average for most NPC's.
* NPC Overall DPS - The overall dps done by NPC's has been reduced slightly on average for most NPC's.
o NPC Damage - This has been reduced on average for most NPC's.
o NPC Melee Speed - This has been reduced slightly (meaning they hit faster than previously) on some NPC's, though most will be roughly the same.
* NPC Resists - This remains largely unchanged, staying the same on average for most NPC's.

* NPC Effective Spellcasting Level - In the last year or so, PC spells got a pretty big boost in power, which means that NPC's also got a pretty good sized boost in power as well. I think the best way to address this is to get a means to specify an NPC's spellcasting-level independent of it's actual level.

As an example, this means that I can now tell a level 50 NPC to only cast level 42 and lower spells, without changing the NPC's level at all. With this functionality, I can reduce the spellcasting power of the NPC's without reducing anything else. With this change, you should see a very noticeable change in the NPC's spellcasting power, particularly in the level 25 to 40 range.

* DISCLAIMER : Given the nature of these changes, I'm speaking of an 'average', so there will be situations where an NPC or small group of NPC's that now resist more now than they did previously, likewise you will see situations where an NPC or small group of NPC's will resist less now than they did previously. This applies to all of the information listed above.

I've made these adjustments to about 70% of the NPC's so far and that data will be hitting the server this afternoon. There are still some NPC's that have not been fully converted yet, so I'll post when those are done as well.

There's one more thing that I have on my plate to do to address some of the melee concerns (that I'm sure will be posted in this thread), so stay tuned and please throw as much testing as you can at this change.

Supposedly, all mobs from level 20 to 50 have recieved an 18% HP boost.

Of course, statistics that players are gathering say that mobs from 1 to 50 have gained up to a 70% HP boost, double attack starting at level 1, increased damage, and pets have had their AC massively nerfed.

Wouldn't be a SOE game if it didn't have it's bugs.

Lv.1 mobs have around 20hp while Lv.2 have about 60 from what little I have played on the test server. And yes, a Lv.1 decaying skeleton was dual wielding because I was both slashed and hit at once by the same one earlier.

Though I am impressed by Sony, they're just repackaging old content, giving it a new name, and I know so many people who are reinstating accounts to play on it. It's marketing genius.
