You're honestly going to say you prefered that piece of shit X-2 over FF6? You're going to say Double Dash is better than Mario Kart? Ok, I took it a bit far with the Street Fighter comment, but I'll admit nostalgia won me over there.
All of that is blatant fanboy bullshit, there is no other explanation.
Double Dash versus Mario Kart is absolutely no contest. DD is an improvement on every single game mechanic, period, PLUS the addition of new ones. How in any possible way is the original a better game?
X-2 is playable. FF6 may have been amazing back in.. what, 1994? but today it is a dated, unplayable game. The game mechanics are both horrid and simplistic at the same time. A lot of people think it aged like wine; If they mean it turned to vinegar, it did. It they mean it got better with age, it didn't.
It's not something people hear about.

Saying X2 is playable is like saying that FF4jp is playable without translation. Yeah it is playable, but as far as enjoyable it's lacking. X2 had great graphics, the story was somewhat entertaining but the game execution wasn't good enough to justify it, IMO. The Dress Spheres just didn't make the game as enjoyable as some people think it to be and talk about broken combinations of dresses.. Dancer/2x Samurai. Chain crit shit to death.

*shrugs* Playstyle preferences then. I prefer the mechanics of the first game. Controls, karts, courses, etc and I never got used to the double part.
X-2 vs FF6 is opinion I guess. To me X-2 is barely playable, while FF6 is fully playable. I prefer FF6 in every way, except graphics, but I also don't mind playing older games. Besides, because a game doesn't age doesn't mean its any worse. For its time FF6 was amazing, and you admit it. X-2 was nothing more than average, and never will be. To further my point, I'm waiting for my copy of Civ4 to be released. Civ2 is still one of my favorite games to play (I prefer it over Civ3 for some mechanics reasons) and one of the best strategy games ever made. It hasn't aged too well though. Does that mean its a bad game? Of course not. I don't see why a game being dated automatically means its bad.

I haven't finished it, I admit to nothing. I never managed to put more than an few hours into it. There was never anything resembling a plot of interest, nor any characters that I can actually pay attention to long enough to care about. And let's not forget the hideously boring battle system.
Trying to pass off the flaws of aging as inconsequential is a cop-out. "It WAS a great game, back when we didn't have character development. Or good writing. Or entetaining battles, sidequests and minigames." Whatever, man. Muhammad Ali was The Champ, but if he stepped into the ring today he would be killed.

Then the game isn't your style. I'm sure if you disliked FF6, Phantasy Star 1 would have killed you. Lots of text and "3d" battles and mazes to explore back on the Sega Master System.
Doesn't mean either one is a 'bad game', just not a game you like. There are thousands out there that agree with you and just as many that disagree wtih you.

Just your opinion then. I liked the plot and thought it was well done. There's definitely memorable characters, and Kefka is one of the best video game villains. Then again, my opinion was that X-2 sucked. Comes down to opinion.
Are you going to say that Ali was a terrible fighter because he can't get into the ring now? Or that his bouts were boring compared to today's bouts, simply because they weren't broadcasted/recorded in the same quality bouts are today?
FF6 is not the same game it was ten years ago. It simply is not the best RPG around.

I don't think I was claiming it was. Just because its not the best game around doesn't mean its not playable or fun. What I'm saying is you can't immediately discount something because its old. Both old and new are good. Both old and new suck. Its all about having fun. If you don't have fun with a game, don't play it. If you do have fun with a game, play it. Why discriminate against one crowd of games simply because its old?
FF6 is a hell of a lot better than X-2 though!

Because I judge here and now, the only time that really matters. If a game can't stand up to scrutiny, it's not a good game; what part of that does not compute?
Plenty of older games still match up today, and only god knows how many of today's games would have been subpar even years ago. And, again, FF6 is not one that stands the test of time if an active fan of the genre cannot even force himself to trudge through it.

If you're going to limit yourself to consoles, then no, there aren't many. Stella Deus was amazing in almost all aspects until the story took a tremendous steaming shit on itself right near the conclusion, and Kingdom Hearts doesn't even count. It's just fanservice accessible to a huge demographic, that happened to have good gameplay hidden behind it.
I'd say the next best opportunity was on the Gamecube, with Tales of Symphonia. Sean fucked around with this message on 10-24-2005 at 09:57 PM.

Yes.
P.S. I'm playing FF6 right now, oh man it's fun. I don't hate any of the characters in an RPG for once. That hasn't happened since Legend of Dragoon. D: Mr. Gainsborough fucked around with this message on 10-24-2005 at 10:09 PM.

I only own a PS2, but PC would be acceptable. A lot of people say Morrowind but I think it was pretty dumb and I didn't even bother getting a few hours into it
And your shut your mouth Kingdom Hearts had an awesome story

They just picked the worst characters possible out of a library of good characters to act in it.
If KH had gems like Simba or Aladdin or the prince from sleeping beauty, it would have been a good game. With the idiotic choices they made, it's almost deliberately nonsensical.

I really loved Intellivision as a kid. The games were dynamic in the sense that you could go offroading in an auto race if you wanted to, or while flying your bomber you could go visit different places without screwing up the game.
I love newer games for the graphics and the pure unadulterated evil that I see in them. Like the latest Splinter Cell, omfg.. when you snap a guy's neck, or slit a guy's throat in that game, I can't help but laugh hysterically.
Yes, I am turning into a sick puppy. Along with the rest of you guys.

I wouldn't say the average quality of games has gone up. More games are released now, so there's a greater chance for good games. Plus, the removal of many limitations of the machines also lends to this. Hell, going from carts to CD-ROM, DVD, etc is a major boon to the developer. There's still plenty of shitty games though, moreso than in yesteryear simply because there's more games released.
Yes, however the existance of DVDs, better graphics, generally higher dev budgets, the fact that original games have created tons of gameplay mechanics for everyone to copy, the fact that dev houses can license 3d engines instead of writing their own, etc, make even the bad games of today more fun to play and look at than the bad games of ten years ago. You're somewhat coming at this from a wrong angle, sure the fact that people don't use carts any more might be responsible for the quality of visuals going up, but the quality of visuals has still gone up a considerable amount, the reason for that doesn't factor into it. We're not debating the average skill of a game developer then and now, we're debating the quality of the final product. Mod fucked around with this message on 10-25-2005 at 05:50 AM.

The next game should have better Disney universe characters. The only one that really bothered me this time was the Little Mermaid, though.
