There are slugs... Lots and lots of Slugs.
It's pretty meh... But it's free. It's not too pretty (Read EQI in appearance), and buggy as all hell, which seems to be typical for all those Korean release games or whatever. It's like that Samurai game that someone posted on here a while back, in fact, probably the same people from the looks of it. It's fun for just killing time, but that's about it. Supposedly its a full PvP Game, although I haven't encountered any of it (In fact all the zones are safe zones except for the Battlefield as far as I can tell). It follows the trend of a lot of other Korean games, in that you can buy InGame stuff with cash to better equip your character, but it's completely unnessesary as far as I can tell. Maybe if you got full on HardCore Korean(Or whatever Nationality made this game) PvP, but I have yet to see that anywhere cept the battlefield, and you cant even get into that place unless you are like level 70+ or whatever.... And the game just isnt good enough to take seriously to get to that point anyway.
Overall, freebie MMO, good time waster, but not much else. Be prepared for Bugs out the ass, and lots of non-english people on in the AMs, and laggy as shit play when everyone and thier mother floods the game during that period. It costs coin (In game currency) to go anywhere in the world, but earning that is pie, you just use the teleporters to go just about anywhere, although in almost 30 levels, I haven't gone farther than the first zone to do anything. Enjoy the engrish, and horrible story writing/quests writing... Which is another point. Quests are no brainers.. Litterally. They tell you exactly what to do and exactly where to go, hell they even give you the (x,y) co-ordinates of everything. Hell you can even just type /town to instantly teleport back to town for free to sell, and whatnot... Faelynn LeAndris fucked around with this message on 09-26-2005 at 06:41 PM.

That one actually looks pretty neat. Gonna check that one out. Edit: Of course, not an RPG or adventure game. Gotta like golf. So not really in the same arena as Knights.
Yeah Knights is pretty bad, but it is free, and there are far far worse freebie games out there. It's not something highly recomended, only brought it up due to the free thing. It can be fun, but it's so horribly broken, it gets more irritating that engaging. Sadly, I'm poor, and dont have much time for online anything at all, so free is best I can get. So, yeah... I'm like level 25 or so in Knights, cause it's the best I could find... and thats not saying a lot. Faelynn LeAndris fucked around with this message on 09-26-2005 at 07:47 PM.

Not to mention a clunky and all around annoying interface.

What possessed us to play it?
Yeah, I think I can goof off with this for a while... but GOD the controls suck.
Starting to miss Cannon and Scorched Earth? Bam, Gunbound. Kind of missing Diablo but don't really want to play it again? There's about five hundred different Diablo-clone games. Infectiously catchy but vacuous pop music, bits of metal, and I've even started hearing grunge.
And best of all, stuff like this is free, even if 80% isn't worth installing, and 15% lasts only a couple of days. Father McKenzie fucked around with this message on 09-27-2005 at 04:08 PM.

Okay... I hated it back in Beta... Reinstalled it and gave it a second chance today, and I still hate it. Interface and controls are utter crap, and it just isn't fun.
Knights Online is honestly more fun for me.

Oh man the controls do suck, but once you realize it is almost IDENTICAL to Old EQ, even down to the old spell bar on the left, it's not nearly as bad. Cept for Click Walking, that is annoying as shit.
But mostly, the game has its moments, and there is no denying it is pretty crappy, but it gets by. AO is almost as much of a pain in the ass... Still.
CTD every time I respawn: Ya damn skippy.

...I liked Leet and Reet Form
Last I Played, I don't remember seeing that many, granted I was spending alot of time in the shadowlands. The Keeper class was crazy, Like a pladain on Roids, I would be constantly soloing Mobs 5-8 levels higher than me.

Still not able to keep up with a MA.
I pretty much ended up going with AO, since its free as well as was said. I take back what I said, it isn't nearly as bad as I remembered it once you get passed the newb stuff. It's still not great, and its overall meh. The genious behind the concept still remains though, but that was always there. (And Reets and Leets dont exist passed newbie island, and the initial newbie start zones)
I also came to realise something... I realised Star Wars: Galaxies, is a complete and total rip-off of AO. I mean, completely. Even down to the way skills work (Minus the levels), merchants, tradeskills, missions (Terminals and how you interact with them) and even player Apartements and Cities. Hell even the HAM bars (Health and Mental for SWG, and Health and Nano for AO) are exactly the same. It's no wonder I hated SWG, cause if you are gonna rip off a game, at least rip one off that's actually good to begin with. And I don't mean SWG is similar (To avoid the "There is no such thing as originality anymore" argument), I mean it is quite litterally the same damn game. SWG is basically just a prettier more refined version of AO... Ironically, even though AO isn't that great, its still more fun than SWG. All SWG really had going for it was being based on Star Wars. Plus AO is free, heh.
Overall I've been messing around a lot, I have a Meta-Physist (Meh class), a Martial-Artist (Overdone, pretty straitforward), and surprisingly this has been the first game where I EVER enjoyed being a supportive Class as I also have a Doctor which is pretty damn fun.
AO was always one of those games, even when I was in Beta for it, that had so much promise, and a shitload of depth (Although to the point of being absurdly overcomplicated at times, and still is), but came out overall lackluster. If it got a better refining job, than Sony gave SWG, it would probably be awesome, but thats likely never to happen.

AO is nothing without the Shadowlands expansion.
Shadowlands = Buy the Expansion + $10 a Month.
Can't do that. Besides I can play Free AO, and there are only 2 classes I cant play (Keeper and Shade). I'm only like level 20, so not like I'm too worried about going over the level 200 cap, I dont need to see the new areas right now when I've got plenty to explore in the old world.
So, basically, I have some time, I'll enjoy the freebies.

Shodowlands had the perk system if I remember right. Had some nice things to add. I hope they changed one thing, in the shadowlands you used to get Insane EXP boost, Like nearly double and triple exp for everything.
Also, AO tradeskills seem nothing like SWG tradeskills unless their was some massive change. SWG probally had the best tradskill system yet, Which it needed because going with the orginal vison of SWG every thing was player made, no npc vendors.

Tradeskill System.
You have have the specific skill trained up for that items creation in order to use the specific item creation tool, put said components to that particular item into tool, and make item. This includes the very same ore extraction and refinement process that is used in SWG, with one exception, no placeable extractors to get components like in SWG, you still have to go out and collect them like all other MMROPG. But you still get components by processesing other items into specific core tools (Just like medics and Bio-Engineers do in SWG) by adapting them. They even use Quality Levels, just like SWG does, which directly effect the quality level of the outcome. Use higher quality plasma sample, make a higher quality first aid kit, for instance. Use a higher quality Information Disk, with a Higher Quality Nano crystal, make a higher quality nano program. Use higher quality bot parts, make higher quality robots. Use different combinations, get different outcomes.
Yeah, SWG is pretty much the exact same thing as AO, only with a nicer interface, and only one Quality level to worry about instead of 2 or 3 like SWG, but its still the same thing, you want the best overall quality components.

Edit: You can even "Upgrade" or refine weapons and armor in AO, ala Slicing in SWG which the Fixer class does best.

Nope. Still happening last I heard. Shadowlands will take you from 1 to 100 in a day or 2 of playing. Much faster if you have people who can PL you through the first 40 levels.

Sorry, wrong. Maybe you'd hit 100 in a day or two with PLing, but nobody could level that quickly otherwise.
Anyway, I said what I said earlier because people play the free trial of AO and rag on it for being boring or ugly or etc etc etc. I think the free trial is a really bad idea because the original AO was only slightly okay without its awesome storyline, which has faded by now. I wasn't suggesting you pay for it, I just hate seeing basically uninformed comments about AO because it's one of my favorite games ever.
Also, without perks your character will be kind of gimped. The game is balanced around perks.
The only problem that I had with Shadowlands were the hecklers. You basically fight hecklers from level 60 straight up to level 220, because they offer 5-10 times the experience of any other mob in the game at any level. This has maybe changed by now, but I don't know. If the Shadowlands didn't have such an intruiging backstory and beautiful design, it would have been pretty mind-numbing. Still, it is a hell of a grind.

Oh it'd still be ugly, but that is just a present day comparison. Back in the day it was just as hot as the other crops of MMO's out there. It needs to be graphically updated and that would rock. (Just with a better Engine cause thier engine even with outdated graphics STILL sucks ass. )
AO's main issues (And still main issues) is the fact that it's clunky, overly complex (Which is both its best, and worst aspect), and much like it's rip off SWG it runs like shit and laggy as hell, even on higher end machines. Specially during City Warfare. It's always been awkward, although I find it less so now than I used to. Those are only the technical issues.
A lot of the game issues arise from things that they had issues with even in beta, and do not appear to be fixed even still (Although this may just be a fr00b thing) but it misses flow completely. From what I've heard Shadowlands and Alien Invasion improved on this.
Like I said a few posts up, AO is one of those games that has soo much promise. It's premise, and concept are just badass, reminds me of Shadowrun which I have always loved, and other CyberPunk things. It was just held back by lackluster implementation, and overzealousness. And, even with the expansions, it still feels like it was never finished.
Personally I think the free account thing is ingenious... Because, if I could, I'd probably get the epansions and subscription (I still might if I ever come up with the money). Which I absolutely would not have done after the horror that was the AO I remembered. They have fixed a lot of things, and it's depth is still there. Which is a good thing.
