The French public shot down the EU constitution just to spite their leaders who they're dissatisfied with, and other countries are jumping on the bandwagon.

I think they're stupid fucks, basically. A federal Europe is a good thing. Squabbling countries getting nothing done are not.

Discuss the stupid French in here.

The French rejected the new constitution in part because they felt it was too capitalist compared to what's in place now.

Life... is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless, perfunctory gift that nobody ever asks for. Unreturnable, because all you get back is another box of chocolates. You're stuck with this undefinable whipped-mint crap that you mindlessly wolf down when there's nothing else left to eat. Sure, once in a while, there's a peanut butter cup, or an English toffee. But they're gone too fast, the taste is fleeting. So you end up with nothing but broken bits, filled with hardened jelly and teeth-crunching nuts, and if you're desperate enough to eat those, all you've got left is a... is an empty box... filled with useless, brown paper wrappers.

I fail to see how this either

a. benefits the individual nations
b. isn't forming ultimately to an economic and military superpower.

If its meant to combine (under a singular authority, things don't "cooperate" they exist in tandem) social and cultural aspects of Europe, doesn't that dissolve the diversity of its social and cultural structures, which I do not find beneficial.

And with those two gone, and the fact that according to Tarquinn, Europe is already a economic superpower. This sorta leaves only military might to be gained, which is contradictory to Tarquinn's previous statement.

(Keep in mind I haven't kept up with Europe, its economy, its politics, or anything close to that, I'm basing any argument I have off of whatever Tarquinn is saying.)

Could you then please explain the benefits of unifying culture and social structure, and clear up why you said it wasn't for military in one post, and then in your next post, listed military as a benefit?

No. Just like the south still has it's culture and the north still has it's culture. And disolving athoritative differences makes regulations infinately more easier to understand and comply with. Just try working for a company that sells material to Europe. It's a procedural nightmare. Lucky me gets to code for it too.

Combined Europe has a buying power in the same range of that of America. But it isn't much of a super power when whatever Germany buys doesn't more than marginally effect the value of goods in Spain. Regulational differences makes it hard to handle Europe as one big market.

I've touched on the major one. 20 different governments making all their own rules will never produce the regulational continential unification provided by a large government.

Who cares about Military besides America anymore, anyway?

Yes, it's not really a constitution though, the politicians responsible for it have only titled it as such for publicity and it bit them in the ass, it's more of an institutional reform to accomodate expansion coupled with a re-codification of many existing treaties.

European constitutions do tend to be pretty massive though, not exactly 500 pages massive for the most part but due to the tendency of continental-European law to codify everything and not rely on case law I doubt you'll find a constitution in the EU as short as the US one.

Yes, that's why the Chirac government is so unpopular. The French are collectively rejecting moves to implement American-style working conditions in France.

If you offered a person in support of a US style system the money he would usually earn with Euro-style labour laws he would jump at at, same with the supporter of the Euro-style system and US-level unemployment and average monthly wages. Everyone wants to work as little as possible, except perhaps masochists, the insane and the director in charge of licking off paint-on swimsuits off Russian supermodels, that's why it's called work and not a hobby, people in the US work for money, not because they consider it some sort of divine calling to clean canning machines and explain to customers that their bills won't be reduced even if it was in fact their kids that ran it up. People in Europe work for money as well, only that they do not have as much of a desire for it and as such vote for people who will maintain a short workyear and in turn lower yearly pay. If they wanted to work more and in turn get more money and lower unemployment they would be praising Chirac into high heaven.
