As quoted by our good friend, Pvednes, in this thread.
This is perhaps one of the most singularly disgusting things I've ever heard espoused from even the ignorant lips of people who blindly hate Christians for the mere fact that they're Christians.
"We don't hate them just because they're Christian. It's just because they're fundamentalists!"
Funny how it can be turned to anything...
"We don't hate them just because they're (Jews/grandmas/Arabs/Spics/Australians). It's just because they're (Greedy and Perfidious/Thieves and Rapists/Insane Terrorists/Lazy Drug Addicts/Ignorant, Wallaby-Molesting Spawn of Criminals)."
But if you say something like that, then it's wrong.
Don't get me wrong, I don't approve of fundamentalist Christianity. Adopting one school of thought and obeying it unquestioningly isn't healthy. I don't agree with a lot of things that a lot of peoples and creeds do, but I don't make such a hateful comment as what Pvednes did.
I don't agree with fundamentalist Islam. I don't say: "So many Islamics, so few religious purgings." I don't agree with a lot of thought that there's a ton of black oppression in the world. I don't say: "So many grandmas, so few lynch mobs."
Frankly, every time I think the blindly anti-Christian group has found a new low on this board, they sink a little lower. You know me, Gydyon and other Christians on this board. Would you gladly throw the likes of us with the lions because a few people say something you don't like?
It's foolish, ignorant and it's got to stop.
They could be throwing insults at a wall for all I care, I look past them.

I find the constant slamming of my (freely chosen) belief to be rather annoying, but you learn to just glaze over the insults contained in threads a great deal of the time. They could be throwing insults at a wall for all I care, I look past them.
Regardless, it's as frustrating to me when someone says "All Christians are ignorant homophobes" as it is to them when a Christian says "All gays will burn in hell."
It's even more frustrating when these are people that you talk to on a regular basis and openly claim they'd have no problem with eliminating you based on your beliefs.

I agree. Pved's comment made me very angry. And Mort, the excuse of being able to ignore it has never passed for being able to do something around here.
We shouldn't have to ignore it. It shouldn't happen.
I used to be a really devout Christian, and those kind of comments seriously aggravated me as well.
No...it shouldn't happen. But it will for as long as humanity remains as stubborn and closeminded as we are. bloodfyr fucked around with this message on 01-25-2005 at 07:21 PM.

No, you just don't do that. Religion is too personal to be that harsh about with acquaintances. Even if you are an ass.

Yeah, but personal attacks on people who you dont actually know are completely fine, correct?
We're probably all guilty of it at some point or another, it's just Pved's example is a bit more glaring as it's an attack on one's belief system.
Sadly, I doubt it will stop.

Non sequitur?
Another important distinction, then, necessarily exists between those things which are created and those with which people are born. Hair color, sexuality, skin color, extra fingers, etc., are all beyond intelligent reproach.

I see no problem with the valid, reasoned criticisms that many people have of Christianity. We've had plenty of civil discussions concerning religion. I have no problem with those that do that.
On the other hand, there's been plenty of bashing without the valid, reasoned criticisms. Pvedenes' comment is just one of many of these I've seen on the boards. I usually hold my tongue on these, limiting it to just a simple fuck you in this case, and have become pretty used to the comments now. Would prefer it wasn't this way, but that's what I expect from the boards now. I guess it stems from it being "cool" to bash Christians or just religion in general now.
quote:
Densetsu had this to say about Matthew Broderick:
A trend I've noticed, and not just here, but in general, is that it's now become 'cool' to bash Christians and make them the butt of jokes and insults much like it was 'cool' to do the same to Jews 5-10 years ago.
This seems a bit absurd in my opinion. Has it ever cool to bash Jews since the (relative) end of widespread anti-semitism post-WW2?
(post disclaimer: This is not meant to be inflammatory, I'm not really bashing anyone or anything, just giving my observations on this phenomena, but I guess you can feel free to flame me if you are offended)
Making general statements about any group, be it political, religious, or social (or all three - Christianity) usually spells out some trouble, but I don't think there was any spite meant by it.
(the following in the about the U.S., but because of the power the U.S. wields in international politics, it is also responsible for international venom as well, in my opinion)
I think some of the venom towards Christians is due to the unusual power they have been wielding in politics as of late. Suprisingly, as less and less politicians are religious Christians, Christianity seems to be taking center stage in our poltics. It used to be that nearly all of our polticians were Christians, but even though they were, I don't think they specifically relied on dogma of that faith to guide them. I doubt Ike sat there and wondered what the "Christian" thing to do was.
Because the Christian majority can no longer assume that their politicians are thinking about following their dogma (because of the possibility of, for example, and atheist being elected), they want more and more overt signs of faith. Considering most of the founding fathers were not Christians, but deists, I think this has been a misconception, or perhaps a deception of the American public for a long time. Machiavelli talked about how princes must appear devout, and to be honest I don't think appearing devout was a prerequisite in U.S. politics for a long time, just not saying you are Shinto, Deist, Hindu or whatever other religion you follow was enough. Now, people want assurance their politician is fighting for their faith... unfortumate at best.
As the United States became more liberal, I think that political stability required that an equally vehement reactionary side to fight for what appeared to be declining Christian power. In reality, I don't think that it was a huge issue, but thanks to pulpit activists, "liberal" became a dirty word. It's ironic (and humourous) that many now and before think of liberals as power-hungry communists, especially as liberal means giving more choice, tolerant of the ideas of others, and against the decline of personal freedoms. Defamation of the opposing side has always been extraordinarily effective.
This has now backfired. A very slim majority of Americans are religious christians. They know their power is on tilt, but I assume they are determined to go out with a bang. Instead of appealing to the public by taking moderate positions (as has been happening in national politics for most of the last century), we see the defamation of "activist" judges, public funding of church activities, as well as trying to overturn constitutional decisions by the Supreme Court. To be honest, I think most of the more right-wing Christians don't give a damn about the constitution they rile on about (really a red herring imo anymore) except when it supports dogma of that faith. Don't believe it? I'll use the latest example of gay marriage. I highly doubt there would be a problem if the Bible said "It's ok for homosexuals to marry, God approves." No matter how much the anti-gay marriage crowd grandstands about the social effects, if the Bible were to say it's ok, it wouldn't be an issue.
Because Christians are responsible for the abominations of freedom, like the banning of gay marriage, they get, and deserve spite from the "liberals" who are trying to make the law non-discriminatory. But that still doesn't make generalizations about Christians ok.
(I'm thinking of supporting this position for my Extended-Essay, and I'm not trying to derail, but I'd like to see what people think... it's always good to get ripped a new one every once in a while)
The truly stupid or the truly prejudiced I tune out. Not worth my attention in whatever case.

Yes. Yes it has. It has been 'cool' to call someone a Jew if they do something stupid, or do not have the talent to do something. Calling something Jewish or calling someone a Jew whether or not it is actually Jewish, or whether or not they are actually Jews, has been used the same way people call things gay, or people gay, whether they are gay or not.

People have a knee-jerk reaction towards furres around here. Vorb's argument is the closest thing to reason I've seen in this thread not to take shots at members of X group. We're supposed to be friends here. Friends don't attack one another.

I'm quite tired of it and it's one of the reasons I don't post here often. I feel like whenever I express my opinion on the matter, the opinion gets streched into some sort of Christian Manifesto and automatically I'm labeled a 'dumb christian'. Something should be done but nothing will. I have never insulted any beliefs of any other people on these boards but I see whenever a christian says something, everyone jumps on it saying 'roflcopter dumb christians!' or 'god is dumb hehe'. It's childish bullshit.

In a thread on religion(I believe Pvednes started the thread), I had stated that I was agnostic. You told me that I "just didn't believe in god because it's the cool thing to do". Or something like that.
No, this isn't something that I have carried with me in PAIN or anything. I just remember things well.

And that, my friends, is the bigger issue here. You shouldn't be bashed on these forums for your religion. Therefore it follows that Gadani and others shouldn't be bashed for not being Christian. What he complained of happens much less often than the "lol christians r dum" stuff, yes, but that doesn't make his complaint any less valid. Not to defend Yuri, because I don't like him, but has it ever occurred to you that maybe, after having our beliefs bashed over and over and over, even we get sick of it, too?
As you said, it happens much less often. That's because most of the Christians on the board just sit back and keep their mouths shut while the rest of the board constantly bashes, badmouths, and makes fun of their beliefs.
Then it's suddenly a bigger issue when the tables are turned (whether deserved or not).

I'm sick of being repressed! It's your turn now!
What's so funny about peace, love, and understanding?
What I meant to say was that the bigger issue is that NONE of them deserved to be bashed. Christianity is the biggest victim, yeah, and that sucks, but let's try to work at stopping ALL of it while we're at it. That was my point. Sorry if I came off as "man who cares if those Christian dudes are getting insulted left and right, Gadani got insulted ONCE! unacceptable!", becuase that was not the intention. I phrased it poorly. I didn't mean that it's a much bigger and more important issue when random agnostics get bashed, but that it's all part of the bigger issue. The same applies to any religion, belief structure, way of life, etc. What I meant to say was that the bigger issue is that NONE of them deserved to be bashed. If you'll notice, that's exactly what Parce said in his original post. He said it both broadly, and also narrowed it to Christians, because Christianity is the most widely bashed faith on this board.

That's because, in that thread, if your memory serves you at all, you didn't put up any 'defense' as to why you are agnostic, merely saying that you were and leaving it at that. The term agnostic has become like candy, being thrown around like it is a meaningless word when it actually means so much more. Several well-respected surveys have been done and, on the average, the person that is between the ages of 15 and 25 that say they are 'agnostic' have no reason to say they are other then because its the most current thing.
And.. why dont you like me Dens?
