Those silly roleplaying christian message boards. What will they do next?
Actually, there are some fake Christian sites out there where people take the absolute extreme ends of fundamentalist Christians and satire them. For the ones that are real, Christianity is not as likely to be something people roleplay.
Is it possible that people believe they are vampires and real life and act the same on the internet? Sure. But that doesn't imply that every internet vampire believes he is a real-life vampire.
Also, if you're ridiculing internet vampires for believing they are vampires, why aren't you ridiculing internet Christians for believing in Christianity?
And then there's OP's case. He acted like AP was real. There's not any reason to think that he believed she was real, though. What do you call that? Waisz fucked around with this message on 11-07-2004 at 05:29 PM.

Zuh?
Let's go through this point by point.
Satire != Roleplay.
Stating a belief as a belief and building a site that explicitly goes out of its way to act like a serious message without any sort of disclaimer is a good reason to assume it is serious. Because see, there is not a whole lot pointing the other way. But hey, maybe we should form standpoints based on the idea that everyone on the internet lies?
Guess what? I will recklessy make fun of young earth creationists and people who believe the bible to be literal. I equate them to the fangy boys over at Sanguinius.
I call OP's pretending wishful thinking and attention whoring. It certainly has nothing to do with roleplay so I'm not even sure what you're implying.
I'm not sure what the hell your point is. Should we assume that they are not serious because they present themselves in a serious manner?

I'm just pointing out different examples of where people do things on web that they aren't actually serious about. It's possible for anyone to sound totally serious but actually not be.
As for your point about people lying on the internet... yes, you can start with the assumption that everything is false and use common sense to decide what is real. For example, any news site is false. Using common sense, though, you know that the websites given by CNN, ABC, FOX, etc are actually real, established news sites and can be trusted. Any site which repeatedly gives accurate and truthful info could be assumed to be real, basically. Waisz fucked around with this message on 11-07-2004 at 05:49 PM.

Link an example.
Seriously, the fact that people CAN pretend to be totally serious says nothing unless there is a majority rule slanted in that direction. Otherwise them being serious is still the most logical conclusion.

Great. Now, by which arbitrary standards should it be ruled as "likely a pretense", which then wouldn't have to be sweepingly applied to just about all other belief sites?

It doesn't state that it is false. You believe that is real simply because it doesn't state otherwise?

Wait, what?
Good to see you're backing it all up.
Let's put this as simple as possible sir.
The vampire boards have the complete appearance of being serious. There is no satire, there is no disclaimer, and in general it could probably be taken as seriously as any young-earth creationist site because it carries the same appearance. So if you're going to dismiss it as false on grounds of appearing as it does, you pretty much have to do similar with any nutjob non-satirical belief site.

First off the entire site bills itself as a place for "vampires" to gather, NOT as a place for people to RP vampires. So if this is some kind of vampire RP site, then it's an RP site that doesn't have a single mention of RP anywhere, which is something that I've certainly never seen and I've seen scores of RP sites.
Secondly, if these people were roleplaying, they would say so when we started ridiculing them. I don't CARE how in-character or engrossed in their RP they were, someone would step aside and tell us they were just RP'ing and to lay off. They would NOT develop elaborate and contrived excuses in defense of their behavior.
Thirdly I spent weeks after the initial invasion lurking their boards and talking in their chat room. These people, without exception, never, EVER make any suggestion that they're roleplaying. EVER. They talk about how difficult their lives are now that they have a bloodthirst, they discuss their superpowers and how it's helped them at work. Shit they even came to THIS board and talked about the same things.
That kind of behavior is totally unprecedented among roleplayers. If they're just roleplaying then they're 100% totally absorbed in their characters from the time they wake up to the time they go to bed, even when casually socializing with one another, and if that's the case then they're STILL a bunch of nutbags that deserve ridicule anyway.

Ok, fair enough, I'll concede this, then. My only argument would be that vampires would be much more likely to be roleplayed and that there's no way to tell for sure whether they believe everything on the site or whether they are roleplaying. But I realize that's not really a strong argument. gg zaza

Unless you're being sarcastic now, yeah, pretty much correct. If you present yourself in a serious manner you should expect to be taken seriously.
