I've said it before and I'll say it again, I guess.

PvP in it's current state is not how the game is going to handle PvP. It was just put in to A) have a second server, and B) quiet all the people clammering for PvP on the forums on a minutely basis.

More like level 18.

People in the current closed beta will not have anything to do with the testers for the stress beta.

Closed beta will be continuing until November or so.

The download process is fucked unless you use fileplanet's stupid download manager.

Life... is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless, perfunctory gift that nobody ever asks for. Unreturnable, because all you get back is another box of chocolates. You're stuck with this undefinable whipped-mint crap that you mindlessly wolf down when there's nothing else left to eat. Sure, once in a while, there's a peanut butter cup, or an English toffee. But they're gone too fast, the taste is fleeting. So you end up with nothing but broken bits, filled with hardened jelly and teeth-crunching nuts, and if you're desperate enough to eat those, all you've got left is a... is an empty box... filled with useless, brown paper wrappers.

I'm still debating if I even want to bother with it now. I rarely even try the new MMOG's anymore, "betas" have become such a big deal, that you have thousands of people playing these games for 6 months to over a year when the general public can even touch it.

So in games like these, once they go live you already have good sized chunk of the population at the pro-level, they know where to go, what to do, and how to do it best.

No one starts out on the same level playing field with MMOGs anymore, which kinda bugs me.

Every MMO has been like that.

EQ had about 9 months for a beta test. Just wasn't as well known. Heck, even UO had one, and I'm sure that The Realm and Meridian 59 had em too.

Much of the issue too is that people have preconceptions of how MMOs work, and those are generally correct nowadays. So people just have more and more of an advantage.

UO's beta1 barely had a thousand active participants, UO beta 1 and beta 2 combined lasted less than 3 months (June to September 1997). No characters copied over from the beta, no 1 year testing period with 10,000+ people (hello shadowbane).

Yes EQ's was longer, but as you said it was kept small and quiet.

I'm saying now the trend is for companies to be focusing so heavily on the beta, that if you expect to compete you have to be playing it pre-release, otherwise (especially in a pvp game) you will have no chance.

It's not gonna make or break the game of course, but it's just a trend I dislike.

Think of it this way: 7 bucks is pretty much what you pay for a rented game from Blockbuster, and you get to keep the game for 7 days.

However, apparently I won't get in because the amount of money that my parents have is tighter than my dad's shirts. Looks like I'm going to be getting a job as soon as my parents let me, or I can sneak around em.

Meridian 59's alpha and beta were both open. I'm pretty sure the Realm was similar. I think M59's alpha and beta combined lasted less than a year. Been awhile.
