There will be two upcoming betas for WoW.

Stress Beta: Everyone who signed up will recieve an invite.

Open Beta: Following a character wipe, everyone will have to download this version of the game. (Most likely the final, or semi-final version of release.) Characters created and played in Open Beta will be available to you upon release. Enjoying your character? Well, buy the game and continue adventuring.

Note: While this information is very accurate, it is subject to minor changes.

So in otherwords, the NEXT beta invite is stress beta?

Also, can we get a VERY rough estimated time on when the next bunch of invites will be released? Like, within the next 3 months or something like that?
Edit: In otherwords, something a better than soon, or very soon.

Also.

The stress beta sign-ups will appear in a week or so. What this will be is one free week of WoW to test Blizzard's servers. You will not able to communicate with current closed beta testers, however.

You will also need a fileplanet subscription.

As for Mac versions: They already have a closed beta Mac version, I don't see why they won't have one for Stress and Open beta.

Open beta will be appearing Soon(TM). Around November.

One more thing... Code freeze forced upon Blizzard by Vivendi rumours are completely wrong.

Earth and Beyond did something like this. It even allowed you to have a special emblem on all your ships (Characters), signalling that you were in the beta. It didn't do anything FOR you, like give xp faster, or anything, though.

This is a good idea, but I think they're going to lose out on a lot of people who (without the open beta) would have bought it anyway, but ended up hating it.

Or whatever. My thoughts aren't coherent tonight.

As I understand it from your explanation: if I go out on release day and buy the game, I will not start on the same level playing field as other people. Since folks playing from the beta will already have an advantage over me.

So basically, if I'm not in the open beta, I'm already behind.

Yes, but you, like everyone else, have the ability to download the game when it goes into open beta.

People that generally buy the game in the first week or two will have heard about it anyway and likely follow it -- also likely knowing about this opportunity. This may get those that weren't going to buy right away to go ahead and buy right away anyway. Those that buy the game a month or two later would be behind anyway.

So, you'd be behind, yes...but it is just as bad as you being behind by buying the game at release a week after it came out. Essentially, Blizzard is releasing the game a few days early online-only. EVERYONE that wants to will be in the open beta. It would only be a problem if it were random people and not everyone in open.

It also cuts down on the "50 people want to kill the same rat" effect that this game will have if everyone buys it on the same day.

Ahh, it sounded like after the character wipe, everyone who was currently in the beta would be moved to open. As long as everyone who wants to be, is allowed in the open beta, then Im ok with that.

The open beta has the potential to cause PvP to become a mess IMHO. If you don't play open beta, you're fucked at release in PvP. Yes, most players will download the open beta, but not everyone will. Those who don't are going to be in trouble.

Except not, since PvP as parce explained it is gank-free. If you attack alliance guards as a hoarde, you can expect to be ganked, but at least by then you're prepared for it.

I was pretty sure that you couldn't attack Alliance people in Alliance areas unless they hit you first, and vise-versa? I was thought that was put in the game to keep newbies from being randomly ganked. :/

There are like two small areas for each side that don't allow ganking. by level 10, you're in gankable areas.

Yes. There's Alliance, Horde, and Neutral areas. Alliance members have immunity in Alliance zones, and will only engage in PvP if they choose to initiate, and vice-versa for the Horde in Horde zones. Neutral zones are free for all areas (though you still can't attack members of the same faction).
