I work at a child care center. I'm looking for a way to get my class of 5 to 10 year-olds occupied in an activity that gets their attention, doesn't leave anyone out, has some kind of ongoing plot, and doesn't require much adult supervision. (Read: I want a television series that'll get them all watching and keep them hooked until their mother/father/legal guardian picks them up.)

Here's the scale:

Level 10:

Level 5:

Level 1:

I'm looking for something around a 3 to 4...if that helps. I'll look into any suggestions, just go for something exciting, but not a lot of violent killing, and no cursing.

My inner child is bigger than my outer adult.

Hmmm, 5-10 year olds... thats kinda a hard range to appeal to, Hamtaro being to cutesey for the 10 y/o's, and Trigun might be a little to much for the 5 y/o's. I dunno... Love Hina?

Slayers? It has alot of violence, but you rarely see anything but the inhuman monsters really die. The people usually just end up battered, bruised, and scorched.

Some off the top of my head: Kimba the White Lion, Magic Knights Rayearth, Cardcaptor Sakura, Sailor Moon, Crest of the Stars, Detective Conan, Voltron, Monster Rancher, Saint Tail.

been a long time but i dont recall any blood being shown or people being shown as dead. its safe i think for a 5 year old and entertaining enough to, i belive there was three series so there is plenty of episodes out there. its also old and likly cheap to get.

Sarcasm is lost on you.

As an oddball suggestion, I'd add Full Moon wo Sagashite. It's very nice, cutesy, and sentimental to boot. But it's only subtitled, so that'd probably eliminate it. And it has little to no action or violence.

Dude, I remember watching that when I was, like, 8. We got up REEEALLY early on saturdays to watch it. It was awesome.

Now it falls into the DBZ-esque category. Lots of episodes where almost nothing happens, and enough preview time that you can watch every other other episode and know what's going on easily.

If I came to pick up my 7 year old kid (if I had one) and I saw a pack of kids watching Anime... and you sitting off to the side, doing whatever, and not paying attention to them, I would beat your monkey ass, and demand a refund. The parents dont pay you people to let thier kids go off and watch TV all day, so you can post online, talk on the phone, or whack off in the bathroom.

I went to pick my niece up from day care one afternoon, and there was a piece of masking tape in her hair, that had the word "Diapers" written on it. This was because the place was one where you supplied such things, rather than them. Now, the tape had been put on her overalls a couple hours previously, and nobody had noticed that it had gotten into her hair. This pissed me off greatly, because ONE: They didnt even bother to tell me they needed diapers. They felt that rather than communicating this to me, they should just TAPE IT TO THE CHILD! Number TWO: My Niece had been potty trained for about a year at this point.

The parents are paying you to work. To help raise thier children. Not to sit them in front of the TV, like they do at home.

I pretty much agree with this.

As far as offering up any exmaples, I really can't because my girls are wierd, and all the anime toons that come on annoy them for the most part, with the exception of Pokemon for some reason.

Thier current list of favorites include

Kim Possible, which actually a pretty damn good toon for pre-teen kids and even younger, ESPECIALLY for girls but with plenty of cool stuff for the boys.

Strawberry Shortcake, which quite obviously will NOT work outside of an all girl situation.

Justice League

Why would you even want to show a 5-10 year old Cowboy Beebob (Edited hopefully at least) or Trigun (Also edited hopefully). They are not going to be old enough to get anything beyond the action, and it's not really kid oriented entertainment anyway.

To me it sounds more like, suggest some anime crap that I wouldn't mind watching, but will also entertain kids long enough.

That sums it up, I think you got the wrong idea. I'm not looking for something to do the entire day. Just maybe 20 minutes each day. My goal is to find something for the entire class to be a part of and do activities based on it later.

You have any idea how hard it is to find some kind of activity a class can do together when some are in kindergarten and some are in 5th grade? Busy work like cutting/coloring/gluing projects are too simple for the older kids(And they get bored) while if I give them something complicated the little kids who can't read yet are lost.

My last successful project was having them take turns getting through Kingdom Hearts, during which time I had the kids make art projects coloring the characters I photocopied in black and white from pics on the net. The older kids I assigned to make life-sized replicas of the weapons (Shield, wand, and keyblade) out of construction paper.

Kingdom Hearts was a great success, the only problem in it was how the kids would fight over the controller. I'm looking for that kind of kid-oriented activity that they can all enjoy...that I won't have to worry about who's turn it is.

SNIP

Why would you use Video Games as a focus, it almost screams adherement to the ADD Syndrome. Which is only going to make things worse, and it tends to put them in the "Need for Immediate Gratification" to get along category.

Art prodjects are a good choice, interactive activities are always a good choice. But having them play a game and do that stuff before it, and doing activities focused on it is not so great an idea.

Right now, if you have a Michaels store near you, they have this new Art Kit (You get 6 for $1.99) called "Zoogles" by Crayola, and what they are little ceramic-like (Not Ceramic) collectable figurines for kids. They paint them with plain ordinary water colors, and the material is absorbant, so no mess and quick drying. They can be as complicated as the kids working on them are. The much younger children can just smear em with water colors, while the older more advanced kids can make them works of art. Keeps them active, entertained, and developing.. Much unlike watching some anime series on TV, that they can't really comprehend anyway.

Search the web for the Kid Activities archive which can give you ideas on all sorts of cheap to free interactive kid activities which lets them be involved, enjoy themselves, and stay entertained.

Unless the TV shows/Games are actually learning material and THEN you make prodjects surrounding them, then thats not some place I'd put my kids. You are looking in totally the wrong direction for dealing with kids, and doing fun activities that they can be entertained by and continue to do so.

Edit: Nevermind the $1.99 deal, Monica says thats with her Discount there. 2 for $3.99 and up. Come with their own paints and all.

Stuff

First off, I get these kids right after they've sat in public gradeschool/kindergarten for several hours. The idea of giving them half an hour of cartoons/video games doesn't bother me.

The other stuff about art projects, yes we've done those. Brought in things like modeling clay and sidewalk chalk..etc but even when using your example of 2$ a set multiplied by 25 to 30 kids (During the busy days) We simply cannot afford 50$ a day for a single art project. Which leaves us to use things like paper, markers, and (If we're lucky) construction paper.

What can these kids draw/cut on paper? Should I give them a lesson on presidents? Math? I'm sure that'd flop, considering that I can't give them a project that'd fit all the age groups I've got to deal with. So I'm forced to let them go at their own pace, doing whatever drawing or crafting things they feel like doing. I give them shows and video games to inspire them (And let them have fun /gasp!!!) so they keep their interest.

Read those links, MOST of those are FREE prodjects and activity ideas. I'm all for kids having fun, but just sitting kids down to watch TV until it is time to go home after they get there from school or whatever is just downgrading things. Hell, even toys, different levels of such, that they could entertain themselves with would be a better idea.

I've been working there for three years, I've got books filled with project ideas, and most of them work for either the younger kids or older kids, but hardly ever both.

About the "just sitting kids down to watch TV until it is time to go home after they get there from school or whatever is just downgrading things." idea, I'm saying again that 20-30 minutes after several hours of sitting in a classroom won't hurt them.

As for toys, hell yeah we've got toys for them to use during free-play. Though we're also expected to have some kind of activity planned during the day for them.
