V6 for lots of highway miles. V4s get chewed up by me (I admit I may be driving them wrong )

Good suggestions!

I4's should last a while and have good gas milage if you treat them right.... they just suck to drive for various reason (with a few obvious overpowered exceptions). you probably drove poorly made I4's... i'd blame make/model instead of the engien style....

then again, they suck to drive for the most part anyhow

Lots of great advice in here Gydyon.

Just to add a jab in to the "Chryslers suck" folks. Most of the engines and transmissions in the cars are made by Mitsubishi these days. At one time when Mopar and Mitsu were selling the same cars (for instance the Dodge Stealth and the Mitsu 3000GT) they were being made in the same exact plant. Day shift Dodge, Night shift Mitsu or whathaveyou. Some of the early 4 bangers from Mitsu stunk up the road something fierce. This doesn't seem to be the case anymore and the V6's I've seen even less issues with. (was a mechanic for a number of years)

My advice is to take a peek at the rice burners that the others have recommended. Also, does anyone recall the most stolen cars are? I thought it was
1.) Honda Accord
2.) Toyota Camry
3.) Certain models of GM cars that are interchangeable with every other GM.
(I've been wrong before though)

My family has had many many Toyota's over the years. Without any major problems. They've retained thier value like crazy and are easy to resell or trade in when it's time to upgrade. Hell, I got $1000 trade in on my 88 Camry with 161,000 miles on it. We upgraded just last week to a 97 Buick Park Ave. My wife is in love because she can fit the kids seats in back and the trunk is XBox huge.

Personal preference, but I'd say look at a used Honda

I have to heartily agree. I think that the Honda/Acura is simply the best brand you can possibly get. Along those lines, I would recommend a relatively new TL or CL, or Accord V6. (I honestly like the styling of a coupe better, but sedans are ofc much more functional)

Looking at the posts, Burger has all ready made these suggestions, so I will just say I concur with him.

well, after a couple boring shifts at work digging through car sites, I've come up with the following suggestions:

For a general Point A to point B car that does little else, you'd be best served by the latest model Toyota Camry, honda accord, or a Volkswagen Passat you can afford and find. The domestic models just don't offer as much for the price here. They're cheap on gas, reliable, good beaters, and just all around a sound method of transportation. Drive both and see which you prefer.

For a sporty sedan, you'd be looking at an Acura TL, a newer Nissan Maxima, a Grand Prix GTP (or GT), or a Passat with the W8 engine. They'll all be quick and nimble, and you should be confident that you'll have excellent fun driving on the highway. Passing power, good cornering, all the goodies you'd expect in a sport sedan.

If you're looking for a bit more luxury in your life, then you'd be well served to look at a Chrysler 300M, a lincoln LS, a cadillac Deville (bit of a gas hog), or haggle down a BMW 3-series to 15K (a bit smaller than the others listed here, but a little more fun to drive too).

The only other real segment you might look into would be the coupes, but they're less practical than a 4 door sedan. The only reason I mention it is that you mentioned that you were seriously looking into a Sebring convertible, which is a whole different ballgame than the other cars discussed in this thread.

The Sebring is about the best utility convertible you'll find. It's got plenty of space, and you can drop the top for a little more fun. A mustang is a step from useful to performance, and then a camaro/firebird/trans-am is another step still. The mustang has a little useful space inside, while still having ample power and it's fun to drive. The F-body cars are all very competent, but are not really suited at all as a family car. A monte carlo is also a good choice if you wanted a large coupe with a little performance mixed in, espescially in SS trim. The only import worth mention is the Acura CL coupe, because it's essentially a TL with 2 doors. Most other import coupes range from bad to quite good, but are ill-suited as family cars as the F-body cars.

any more direction to help you refine the search?

I made a huge long ranting post in a car thread a while back about I4 versus V6... instead of rewriting it here I'll just summarize.

I4 Only if you're going with a manual transmission. Otherwise spring for V6. Your wallet will thank you.

Yaes.

I4 + A/C + Automatic = dead engine sooner than later.

A well maintained v6 or v8 will last many times longer than a well maintained I4 for this specific reason.

I love the TCHA-mobile. Most of my vehicles in the past 10 years have been Chevy's, and this one hasn't disappointed me either. It's a fun little car.

It has much better gas mileage than my Sub had.

I see a bunch of people suggesting 300M's.. wow, those are SO nice! I was lucky enough to rent one for a week, and it became a sort of dream car for me. I think I might try to get one in a year or two.

The only real downside at all (IMO) to the 300M is the price and size. They are sometime just a smidge bigger than what you'd be looking for ideally.

But I think that they're a wonderful family sedan, among the best of the breed.

That car is so sporty though for a sedan. Plus, it has all the bells and whistles so it is total luxury. When I rented it I didn't want to get out of the car! The one I rented was a beautiful raspberry color, it was snazzy.

a stratus is one of those cars that falls into the "get it done" category, and it really doesn't have anything spectacular about it. I think the phrase "ho-hum" descrribes it accuratly. The accord and camry do the same thing, only better.
