I think it had plenty of standalone merit, but it was probably some of both.
The other LOTR movies were good as well, and still lost. I wonder if the fact it was a completed trilogy, filmed at one time, and released in consecutive years gave it the edge.

I guess making jabs like that is all Sean Penn has left for a hobby. He's older now and if he tried beating up the younger generation of paparazzi, he'd probably get his head handed to him.
However, I think its perfectly fine for Michael Moore and that guy who won best documentory this time, because it actually relates to what they did.
It's no different than when the best supporting actor guy talked about people getting help for abuse in real life, or whatever.
I dont think it deserved all 11 of those at all.
