615 homes destroyed.
14 people dead.
122,000 acres covered by the fire.
$250,000+ in damages.

That's a laughably low estimate. Right now we're looking at a billion dollars in damages, and even that's a low estimate.... and the fire's still not under control yet.
How did the fire start? Just a wildfire?

Apparently FOX news *to lazy to refind the link* has it stated that the Homeland security guys are calling it terrorists.. or something like that...
as to the terroist thing....
every other local news station that's actually been COVERING this (fox news wasn't even covering it at all before i finally just put it on KUSI and left it earlier today.....or they were playing commercials during a serious emergency) has consensus saying that it's been some asshat hunter who shot off a flare in the middle of no where because he was lost.
the reason for the many fires has been said that because there are many fires per day which are useually responded to shortly, by the time there are actually resources available to stomp these down with this big fire, it's already gotten out of control.
but this *IS* FOX and the office of homeland security after all. and it's obvious that any disaster in this country is the sole responsibility of those damn ragheads. It also can be determined from satalite in the middle of a raging inferno exactly what caused the fire. ( ) [ 10-27-2003: Message edited by: The Dread Pirate Skittles ]
Cuz you know, FOX is on the ball.. or something...
For 615 houses to be 250k in damage, they'd have to cost 406 dollars appiece.

Seriously dude, you know what housing costs are here. Shit, my house is worth about $350k or more and most of what got burnt were Scrippie houses.

My Uncle, who is also a San Diego Firefighter was "in the thick of things" at last report, Im taking this to mean he was in Ramona or Poway where the really huge fires are. Im worried about him too... These guys are kinda old to be out breathing all this smoke n' shit and running up and down the hills with nothing to drink.
I saw the decimation of the fires. the pictures don't even do justice, it's like going through a nuclear fallout zone. The ground is still smouldering. and the sereneness of the areas burned is erie. I knew the canynon where it burned(Scripps Ranch) would go up soon, but not this soon. It was a favorite drive home for me to get me away from the I-15 traffic when I didn't want to deal with it. I can look north and see flames from the northern fire moving west, the smoke is black and brown. I know there are some homes going up, but all I can do is watch, the best thing for most of us to do.
It's a somber time here. The roads are flowing at least north and south, but now I feel for the people near the I-8, that's the major front today. *hears some of the air support that trying to make its way down south from the northern fires in san berdoo.* And I feel for those in Tierrasanta, and San Carlos.
All in all it's down even though the sun is shining bright.
Astronomy half of me is happy though, you could see 2 prominent sun spots that caused the solar storm 2 days ago because of the smoke

I also hope that the San Diego Zoo and its Wild Animal Park extenion don't get caught by this fire.
Their fine, The Wild animal park is not under smoke much, and the Zoo animimals are being kept inside because of the smoke, of which is now blowing south over my house now....
And ya cuz, mom and i were thinking that it was him but we didn't want to call the station to see if it was him.

To give you an idael what its like here, the smoke over head is as think as a overcast day, and the air around us is foggy with smoke, maybe a mile visibilty. The light is peach, alot like the setting sun and the air smells like a big bbq. and its snowing in SD....it's snowing ash, the streets are white with ash.
Granted, I'm probably seeing a fire from north of LA, but jeez...

150 in Scripps Ranch
that's been officially updated to 300+. the figure of 150 was a very rough estimate based off of what the firefighters though while they were running around and the new one is a house-by-house count done now that it's safe in Scripps.
damage estimates are in the billions. i think the report said upward of 15000-20000 people have been displaced by this fire so far (or was it 30000? can't remember)
official (official and whatever it is is prolly vastly different, but i'm only sighting official here as fact) death toll is 30+ and it's expected to eventually top 100 as they sift through animal remains to find human remains.
businesses all across the county are closing like there's no tommorow due to the complete anihilation of people actually going to work and buying stuff accross the county.
Fire might (maybe, sorta, kinda, but prolly not) be contained by Friday at the earliest, more realistic expectation is Monday from what Mr. Mayor said.
Right now there's a fight to hold out till massive reinforcements arrive and to stop the two main fires from joining and becoming one fucking retardedly massive fire. From the last news i saw, it was looking pretty grim.
5 firefighters have lost their homes so far while fighting the inferno.
In personall news my Uncle (Capt.) George is fine and on mandatory rest until 6:30 am after an almost Forest Gump-like day on Sunday. My Uncle (Capt.) Andy is somewhere in the thick of it fighting fires on the frontlines.

Death of Rats had this to say about Knight Rider:
Before I saw that I was going to ask if it was raining ash, yet. Guess that answers my question.
Wild Animal park is near HWY 78. East of Escondido. Between the Paradise and the Cedar fires. So far so good for them. San Diego Zoo, if I remember right is near Balboa Park closer to San Diego. And while you are at it don't forget Sea World, Marine World and the Wild life reserves.
We have family that lives in San Diego county. Hope they are safe as well. Hope everyone near the fires are safe.
There are fires here in Utah also. But nothing like what is going on in Ca.
Take care all. I will be around a bit. <snuggle hugs>

Strange; in that photo the car is covered in ash but the others appear to have little or no ash on them. Did that car come from an area where it is much heavier? Or is it just the angle and light of the photo?
I'd guess it sat overnight. My car was like that when I was stuck at a friends. now my house smells like the smoke... it's not fun.
This is because the smoke and ash gets colder and starts to sink as it gets blown south west.
Knowledge is power!
I just got up and it seems like it's way worse than it was yesterday. just turned on the news to see wtf is going on.
Like a constant fog bank of smoke too.
And of course, all the news stations have stopped covering it so i have no idea WTF is going on.
