Pretty much sums it up~
Make me gag. My dad smoked a pack a day when I was little and now the smell of them almost makes me retch.

A myriad of reasons: taste, habit, and so forth.
Yeah, it calms the nerves, so does ejaculation. If you don't want to be thought of as "running away from your problems", time to swear off sex and masturbation.
You coward.
Other than that, a cigar maybe once a month if I'm planning on having a nice relaxed night with friends. Sitting sipping single malt (neat) with a Montecristo in your hand is a WONDERFUL combination.
No, Really. Bite me.
I think it's because you can smell it in real life, and have to deal with the smoke.
I may smoke a cigar once in a while when I'm of legal age. [ 09-30-2003: Message edited by: Vorbis ]
Giant purple tumors, anyone?
I started smoking last June due to working. After doing hard work for a day, I needed a way for my body to relax, and honestly, my body is already screwed up enough that I didn't find any other way to relax easily. Say what you will that smoking for stress release is a coward's way to deal with it, but I literally couldn't find another way to achieve that effect naturally.
I've continued to smoke because it's mostly habit now, a ritual of sorts. The Lighting Of The Cig. It gives me a steadying thing in my life and helps keep me balanced. Some days I don't smoke. Sometimes I don't smoke for a few days. But I get kind of wonky then.
Sure it's an unhealthy habit. I know this. But I'm rather self destructive. Have been for years. But I am polite about smoking. I refuse to smoke around people who don't smoke. I used to be in their boat. Smoke irritating my eyes, hurting my lungs, the smell offended me, etc. Doesn't affect me in the least now, but that's besides the point. I am a rather considerate person sometimes.
My life, my choice. You can try to convince me to quit, but I'm a stubborn asshole.

While I'm comfortable around smokers in mass, I feel no desire to smoke. I find the habit rather disgusting, but I dont care if others smoke around me. Trick is, they have to respect it when I ask them to stop for a bit.

Cherveny stumbled drunkenly to the keyboard and typed:
c) I'm a part-time musician, so I need my lungs
I am I guess full-time musician and that's what started me smoking in the first place. My best friend and myself have recently decided to quit though. I think we are both doing a pretty good job. So I'm going to say no, I do not smoke.

The logic train ran off the tracks when Mortious said:
Yes, you do.Try and quit. Cold turkey. You'll discover your need rather quickly.
Trying to quit smoking has more to do with willpower, than it does with any physical need. Although for some people the physical needs are greater after prolonged exposure, due to thier specific makeup, it is still more willpower than anything else, which is the reason it is mostly 'habitual'. For 'some' people it may be addicting physically, but for most, its just lack of will.
I actually quit smoking for about a year or so because I was starting varsity, and I wanted the effort more for my game than for a smoke. Not to difficult a thing to do if you have the will to do it. Once football was done, I just started up again because I missed it. Not because of a physical need for it, I just missed the taste/smell/feel itself. Going out and having a smoke at the club with the guys was just something I found fun to do.
I don't smoke.
Besides, I don't honestly think I could do it physically. Just walking past a smoking person makes me cough, having to stand near a few makes me gag, if I'm in a roomful of them, I start to asphyxiate from the induced asthma. If I tried to smoke myself I'd probably croak on the spot.

but you can smoke in public.
My Mother caught me with a pack of cigs and made me sit down with her and my step father and smoke. Before I was finished with each cig they had another lit. Told me if I wanted to smoke then I would smoke with them. They made sure I inhaled each breath. After about half a pack I almost puked.
And now with smoking being a major player in my Mother's death I will not preach to the smokers since you all understand your actions. I will tell people that are thinking about smoking that it will cause you grief. Your lungs are not very forgiving to that kind of abuse.

Yes, but it's not ok to ejaculate in public, with co-workers or with family.
And I think what he was trying to say earlier in the thread is that he/she doesn't feel the need for a "crutch" that helps you calm down, yet kills you at the same time. Yes cigarettes are addictive, but they're also soothing. They calm your nerves after a day of bullshit at the workplace. I know, because my mom's a 2-pack a day person and she constantly admits that she'd love to quit, if she just didn't have so much stress.
And for the record, I have not, nor will I ever, smoke.
Asthma
1. The many many health reasons, the four family members dead from it, etc
2. It's disgusting. The smell, the smoke, the taste.. just yech.
3. I can't stand to be in the same room as an (inconsiderate) smoker, yet alone smoke myself, for the above reason. A cigarette would have to be the most revolting thing I've ever put in my mouth. Just no.
Just being around someone who smokes (With the smell on their clothes) nearly makes me gag.

What on Earth could convince you to decide that sticking dead leaves in your mouth, setting them on fire, and breathing in their ashes would be a good thing to start doing?
I'm not being facetious here; I can understand being addicted to cigarettes, I just don't understand why someone would consciously decide to start smoking.
broke it, crumbled the pack, tossed it and never went back.
I have no money to. Why the hell would I start up an expensive addiction when I can barely scrape enough together for lunch every day?
While there are alot of minor factors, the real reason that I don't smoke is because I just decided that I don't want to.
However, I (and my mom) love the smell of a good tobacco shop. One that sells various types and blends of pipe tobacco. Pipe tobacco (unburning), roasting coffee, and oak cabnets all together make a wonderful smell like no other.

Eating lunch is such a disgusting habit. We all know you're secretly running away from starvation. Coward.

I Imaghin it not so good for the walls and furniture in you house too. Makes everything look filthy. [ 10-01-2003: Message edited by: Peter ]
I find the smell disgusting, I know I am way too easily addicted, and I can't afford to flush my money down the toilet like that. What some people spend a month on Cigarettes, I can spend and get two games for my NGC/PC/PS2/GBA. I can play my games and the biggest health problem they cause is a lack of sunlight.
I don't get cravings when it's -5 outside, with 30 MPH winds so freezing cold they almost cut to the bone, just to light up a stick of burning dead stuff.
I have a mild case of athsma which, I'm informed, probably came about after I started hanging around smokers very often. I never experienced any symptoms or had any troubles breathing until I started working at a call center, and would go out on my breaks to chat with friends who smoke. The same year I started doing that, I started getting short of breath, would break out into coughing fits in the wintertime...
I understand other people enjoy it, like it, or can't quit or whatever, and I don't judge people by their habits, but I do feel like smoking is quite possibly the single most disgusting habit anyone could ever abuse their body with. Even if others don't feel the same, that's my opinion - it's disgusting and completely filthy.
