Atkins is an asshole. I would also recommend NOT weight lifting at all, since that usually ends up adding fat. Just work some aerobic exercise into your life. Try to be more energetic. Drink more water.

I really wish I had some dieting tips, but I've never dieted in my life. I would really be skin and bones if I ever tried

But I'm going to borrow your thread for a question. You guys have seen me. I'm a twig. I don't need to lose weight, but I would like to be fit. What types of exercise would you recommend for muscle toning and working out your heart to stay fit?

Cardios burn fat, but also condition you for tougher stuff.

Use weight-training to get muscle and sit-ups because you have a paunch.

That's just dumb. Weight training in combination with aerobic exercise burns fat faster than aerobic exercise alone.

For you, mostly weight training, and some aerobics to keep your stamina up.

What sort of weight training?

The kind where you lift heavy stuff, then put it back down.

Just basic free weights. Machines aren't as good, since they isolate the muscles--free weights use many more muscles per exercise than do machines. I'm not a certified personal trainer, or anything, so I can't design anything specific.

I'd say go to the library or bookstore and look in Muscle & Fitness Hers for a beginning workout.

For you, though, you'd especially want to start very small and move into real weights. You'd also be amazed what good you can do with one of those exercise balls.

Oh yeah, definitely small. I am teeny

I'll have to find a chance to get to the library and look those up. I never had to worry about staying fit before, because being a band geek took care of that for me in high school. But since then I've fallen out of shape. Be nice to be fit again.

YES!!!

If you're just standing there, doing curls (hold a weight in your hand, bring it from at your side up to your chin, using your bicep), you're working your bicep, and not a whole lot else.

Sit on a large ball, with your feet together in front of you (touching), and you'll work a lot of your abs, your back, your legs, all because you're balancing on the ball. Once you get good at that, you can even squat on the ball (like kneeling, only not, best approximation is "girl on top" fron porn, where the ball's the guy, only your legs don't tough the floor.) and squatting makes you use even more muscles for balance.

Or put the ball under your shoulder blades, laying parallel to the ground, knees bent at a right angle, feet together, and do bench presses with dumbells (one handed). you'll work a lot of muscles that way too.

Bite me.

No, Really. Bite me.

I hate exercise balls.

They do a lot of good, yeah, but they're a pain in the ass.

but dude, they're SQUISHY!!! How can something squishy induce ass-pain? Unless you've got some extenuating medical reason, I don't think squishy balls will induce anal pain.

I guess I'm not as used to balls as you.

So wait, you're saying that it's better to run around while weight lifting?

Actually, for optimum fat loss, studies show that it's best to do 15-30 minutes of aerobic exercise prior to lifting free weights.

Here is the link I posted before--thanks to my wife for finding it. I'd offer to e-mail the various months of the program, but the files total nearly 200MB.

Ultra

The thing about this program is it requires access to a very nice gym to do exactly--has a few rather esoteric exercises in it. It also doesn't (that I remember) explain how to do some of the exercises. But a trip to the library or a few questions of the local gym attendant should help substitute or explain moves.

The great thing about this particular approach is that you don't starve yourself. Quite the contrary--eating sufficient good food is a challenge when lifting.

Hope everyone enjoys.
