I think you should have the command expand into a lance of it's own. I think that would help to take advantage of this faction armor and to give up a core unit for rallying and such. And it would look better. They did it in all the mechwarrior books anyway =P .
Edit: and frankly i think you should forget the position as you come and try to balance the units. Lance commanders should remain but i think the ranks should be reorganized to improve effectiveness.

i'll lead a Flying company made up of primarily light blades with some ranged units thrown in to exploit holes in the defense or buffer thrusts at the walls as needed.
