See, when someone thinks up something witty, they go "oh HO look wut i found". And people laugh. Funny funny. It's a trend for a while, but THEN something happens!
The joke gets old. It's no longer new. It's no longer witty. It is old.
Most people drop it, and go searching for a replacement.
But see, some people lack this thing called "pattern recognition". They cannot grasp the concept of a joke outliving itself, and keep it alive. Keep it going. Until it's FAR up the throat of the joke's unfortunate victim.
Thus is the case with D and yaoi.
Thus was the case with Deth and hitting of Ly.
Thus was the case with Parc and praire dog punting.
HOW TO RECOGNIZE AN OLD JOKE:
Check the joke against this list. You get one point per checked part of the list. If you get at least two points, this is an old joke.
- Less than two people are laughing. You can't count yourself.
- The joke originated more than two weeks ago.
- The target of the joke appears actually pissed off.
- The target of the joke have repetedly asked people to stop. (This one gives two points).
I hope this is to some help, and good board reading to you all. [ 03-19-2002: Message edited by: Za'Yth ]

Am not.
If someone thinks it's still funny, it's going to live on. So, 'sux 2 b u' for the people who think they're old.
Laughter is the physical response to new connections made in a person's brain, connections made from two seemingly unrelated objects being linked together
Jokes are designed to lead a person's mind one way, then suddenly connect it to something unrelated
Why did the chicken cross the road?
To get to the other side
A chicken is not something you associate with intelligent decision, you don't think that it consciously wanted to cross the road for no reason other than it wanted to. Everyone has heard the joke so many times that the two ideas are now naturally linked in our minds, and cease to be funny.
When you hear a new joke and new connections are made, you laugh. Why is it still funny the second time you hear it? The connection just isn't fully established yet, thus every time you hear it it becomes less and less funny, until the connection is so well established that you don't find it funny anymore, thus you don't laugh, and no new connections.
My 2 cents

Nope.
What I used is just another way of saying "Don't you mean...", rather than take for example the Parcelan jokes, which are a trend focused around associating a certain person with a certain (often abrasive) joke.
If people constantly over the course of a month used that method of joking to pick apart your posts, then you might have a point.

(Jesus christ what's with quote?)
No, 'old' joke can mean three things:
- A general joke that's been around too long. Aka my joke. Or blue butts. Generally harmless. They fade from the "joke" aspect and become more of a way to state a point, or show you're part of the group.
- A general joke that's been around too long, but never reached the "fade away" part. For example, AYB. It just got obnoxious, because it had no real rejoke value, and you it's unusable in most aspects.
- A joke on someone's expense that is buried, then dug up, outfitted with a tux, and sent in the direction of said target frequently.
The last two are the ones to look out for. [ 03-19-2002: Message edited by: Za'Yth ]

sent in the direction of said target frequently.
'Overabused' would fit the last one.
'Overused' would fit the other two.
And such, this is why arguing on the internet is futile.
And besides, what's your point? That they're Overabused?
Wouldn't that mean you agree with me?
(I'll even color-code it for ya)
Do what you want but act like an ass and you're banned.
There's no sense in restricting the actions and speech of others. Diversity makes the boards a more fun, more intellegent, more active place.
But some facets of diversity are not welcome. Deliberate antagonization for instance, or behavior that everyone agrees is highly annoying (ie. repetition of an overdone or offensive joke) can not continue, ergo...
...Drysart will dispatch of individuals participating in such action with extreme prejudice.
Thus the post.

Yep, but all you did was to agree with me that they are overabused.
So basically:
"They're overabused, but tough shit"
However, at the same time, you say that it's a DIFFERENT thing if I thought it was funny to insult you on every turn.
Hmm...

But the point is:
- That something will go on, doesn't mean it should go on.
And giving up on something and saying "Oho it wil nevar change" is just passive submission.

But if it only will go on sometimes, doesn't that mean you should do everything you could to stop it? I mean, pissing people off is wrong, is it not?

There was much rejoicing when Za'Yth said this:

So, while a joke may get funny, it's up to the 'single target' who doesn't like it anymore to make sure it's well known that he does not want this to continue. Otherwise, for those who still think it's laughs all-around, they can't be blaimed.
