Maturity is hardly defined by the willingness to let fools take liberties with oneself or one's friends.
Nor is it "shit like this" that causes people not to post. I rather think it's stunts like your friend pulled that go unremarked that convinces people not to join. Part of what it means to have a sense of community is a common willingness to voice displeasure when outsiders attempt to mistreat the community or its members. Allowing such "random verbal violence" is much more detrimental.
Why join a community at all, if there are no normative pressures to encourage good behavior?
Or is it simply that lurkers like yourself and your friend are merely looking for outlets for your misbehavior, and are therefore unwilling to delurk where such is not welcome?
I'd say that was a good thing, personally.
