Having seen three movies in as many weeks, I have also seen a bunch of trailers. Some look good, some look not so good.

One of the ones that caught my attention was I Am Legend. I vaguely remember The Omega Man from back in the day, so this movie has potential I wonder, though, if they'll get into the whole backstory behind the title, or if it'll be closer to Heston movie.

Now, Live Free or Die Hard. I do loves me a good Die Hard flick, but I dunno. Willis is like, fifty, and they have that fucking C.H.U.D. from the Mac commercials as his goofy sidekick. The action looks good, if a bit wanked, but again, I'm on the fence about this one.

As for comedies, I do want to see Rush Hour 3 and Superbad. And I guess I'll see the Harry Potter movie. But the movie I'm absolutely dying to see? Bratz, of course.

So, are there any upcoming films on your gaydar?

I'm still on the quest of convincing someone to see Transformers with me.

This is a really hard quest, I hope the reward is a good one.

That's about it.

After the disappointment that was Ocean's 13, I'm not certain if there's any movie coming out within the new few months I wish to see.

The plot to I Am Legend is basically thus:

Will Smith is a scientist who helps create a super-virus which ends up turning all(?) humans but him into vampires. He's on the run trying to find the reason why he immune and figure out the cure before they eat him. I already have my doubts of the potential of this movie, mostly to Smith being cast as he was.

That is not the plot to I Am Legend, unless they're totally changing the original story. Of course, considering it is a Will Smith movie I wouldn't be surprised at all if that happens.

Meh, my main issue with Ocean's 13 was the movie relied on fantastic, over the top Pierce Brosnan as James Bond style gadgets to advance the plot. Super intelligent anti-cheating super computers, magic polymer magnetic dice, insano chemicals that causes women to go insane with lust from sheer proximity, pocket sized mega magnetrons... heck, even the hotel reviewer guy had night vision digital binocular glasses

I'm sorry* if it disappoints you that I disliked Ocean's 13, but it's true. I had a lot of problems with it. Namely, the directing and the writing. It's not a baseless dislike. I would think if someone had managed to scrounge up all those big names and put them into one film, that same someone would be able to make sure that the film is damn good.

In a way, it's also my own fault. I had rather high expectations of this being a good movie in light of Ocean's 11 and 12 both being excellent. (12 less so, but still a good watch) Not to mention, the movie theater employee who put the film together did a horrible job. Either that, or the shutter was loose. This resulted in the picture vibrating slightly throughout my entire viewing. I'm sure that had something to do with it, as well.

Indeed. They would've had an easier job if they had done The Caves of Steel. Plus, I think those Robot novels would make excellent movies.

What I've learned about comics to movies (and by extension novels to movies) is that there is no 100% faithful adaptation. A novel-to-movie adaptation should follow the major plot of the novel...but let's face it, you're never going to cram a full-length novel's nuances into a ninety-minute to two-hour timeframe. Hell you'd have a hard time cramming a full-length novel into a three hour movie, and movies with that sort of running time almost always end up dragging horribly. You'll never get all of the juicy psychological tidbits.

The best novel-to-movie adaptation I think I've ever seen was Fight Club, and even then they didn't get some of the details in. On the other hand, the movie did a MUCH better job of springing the Brad Pitt/Edward Norton dichotomy (particularly when the narrator realizes the truth) on the viewer.

All you can hope for is a faithful translation. But like any translation, things get lost.

As for comic book movies, eh. Keep in mind there's NO major comic hero out there, from Spawn to Superman to Spider-Man (and everyone in-between) who hasn't had their continuity tampered with at some time or another. The initial Superman movies were extremely faithful to Pre-Crisis continuity. Post-Crisis, they were a mess. Spider-Man had a series of HORRIBLE movies before the Raimi era, and even then Raimi made the webshooters biological rather than mechanical. Hell Spidey's webshooters aren't mechanical in the comics anymore either.

The decision to alter the webshooters, however, were an example of a GOOD comic-to-movie translation. The "Running out of web fluid" schtick was a lame dramatic crutch in the comic books for years, to the point that they gave the shooters alternate functions ("impact webbing", "stingers" etc) in the comics to try and keep the idea relevant past the realization it was a variant of "the hero's gun only runs out of bullets when it's dramatically appropriate" bad storytelling trick. Raimi didn't need them, they would have taken up otherwise extremely valuable storytelling time he could use to do something cool, and overall it wasn't THAT big a deal.

Now...sometimes they take that sort of convenience/expedience too far. I thought Doctor Doom in the first movie was horrible. But then Reed wasn't the super-genius I was hoping for, either. And the Thing suit was...meh. I was hoping for CGI. BUT(!) the spirit of the story was decent. It earned them the right to tweak things, which they apparently have for the second movie. No low-budget Baxter facility, no lame "Discount Science" crap. Looks solid this go around. And I like the stuff they've done with the Surfer. I even like the idea of giving him Lawrence Fishburne's voice.

As for Ocean's 13...I haven't seen it yet. But as I recall, the first movie had a portable EMP device capable of blacking out the Strip...and the SECOND movie had a three-dimensional holographic image projector. So....the precedent is there for pseudo-next-generation tech. Besides the only other way they could've taken on crashing the casino by rigging the games, from a dramatic standpoint, would to have had excessive, tedious sessions regarding the minutia of gambling each...and every...single...one...of the games...which would have all the fun of watching a M:TG card tourney at the local comic shop.

Any of you ever see the ORIGINAL Ocean's Eleven with the Rat Pack? That movie stunk to high heaven (Forgive me, Frank).
