The Super Robot Wars alpha series is actually pretty neat, even just to watch.

It's just a grid based strategy game like Fire Emblem only with giant robots. *shrug*

That actually looked pretty cool.

While it was rife with typical anime XTREEEME combat, it was really REALLY well animated.

Just because a system has the power to handle better doesn't mean it has to.

Personally I think it would look lame if they tried to do it in polygons.

So what you're saying is, "Worse is better"? I've got nothing against sprite-driven side scrollers. . .but one can hardly accuse them of being really cool or cutting edge or anything. The best one can say is, "Damn! That's awesome animation for a sprite."

I just think it funny to rave about 20-year-old technology.

Here's the funny thing:

20 years from NOW, games that use sprites still won't look bad. Sprites are like drawings. They're art, and they only look horrible if the art is horrible.

However, games that have tried hard to look realistic, without using any kind of art, will just look more and more like ass as time goes by.

Of course, this is just my opinion.

If you attack without screaming the name of your move so hard you sound like you're having a fit first; you do zero damage.

It's in the rulebook.

At least he was lucky enough to fall backwards. The ones who fall forwards get to have lots of quality time with the dentist. When I was a cadet, they ceased having open-ranks inspections on the terrazzo due to the number and cost of injuries.

It's not really raving, it's simply giving credit where credit's due. A good-looking game is a good-looking game, and the technology used to achieve a desired style is irrelevant. Of course, picking which games look good and which games do not is entirely subjective.

I suppose you could say that you don't like the look of sprites, and that would be okay, but saying they're "worse" is misspeaking, in my mind. It's simply a different (and older) approach to creating visuals, and it has a style that cannot be replicated with polygons.

Okay...a few things...

1. The art wasn't THAT good. That's like saying the art for SD Gundam stills is good. It's chibi crap drawn with the least amount of detail that they could get away with. That having been said, it's not a sin or anything but let's not go around aggrandizing it. I was alive in the era when that was cool and cutting edge too. I'll take cutting edge for giant robots today over cutting edge for giant robots then. Games like that should be relegated to portables.

2. Saying that the anime stylings of yesteryear is somehow art when anime stylings of today is crap is...odd. To say the least. That's like people saying that the old cel animation of Disney is somehow inherently superior to the computer animation styles of today. It isn't, folks. Computer animation just gives you a lot more potential room to fill with detail. Likewise, modern anime design means that doing things in the old "shortcuts" style looks like ass. There are plenty of anime and games out there using a more modern design that look plenty fine.

3. Nothing excuses having to hear "g-g-go-gai-gar!" over and over and over again. Nothing.

The problem with anime based video games is most things look really terrible as a three dimensional model compared to the normal 2D look you are used to.

Sprite animation isn't really obsolete. There's actually a fairly rapidly growing industry in the cell phone/pda game business that's based largely on sprite animation, not to mention many DS games are at least partly based on sprite animation.

In addition, there's also a growing market for popcap-esque cheapo games that are largely sprite based.

Sprite based games have several advantages over 3d games, in that they are an order of magnitude cheaper to produce, easier to render on limited hardware like cell phones and PDA's, and are somewhat easier to interpret on small screens and the like.

That said, coopery may be a lost and obsolete art, but I really don't see any harm in admiring a really fine fucking barrel.
