I seem to have outgrown anime. I no longer find it entertaining or even reasonably fun to draw.

Gah!

And I bought so much of it too >.<

Quick, what can I do to rekindle my interest in it? I do not want to grow up

Pretend that you're a thirteen year old girl susceptible to fantasies of pretty boys saving dumb hoes.

That worked for me.

Or just start watching other forms of animation and develop a new appreciation for anime based on how crisp the animation is, and how well it reflects elements of film.

But that takes a lot of work, and kills the fun that anime provide when it's just 'entertaining.'

Shakugan no Shana, Bleach, Noein. Those are pretty much what I watch currently.

Texhnolize. For that element of heavy stylization.
Rune Soldier. For fantasy cuteness and comedy.
Kodocha. For silly children things.

As far as newer things I've heard about- Gilgamesh looks promising.

Pretend your Mr. Gainsburogh, who seems not to mind he is watching what is like the Japanese equivalent of My Little Pony.

Personally I stopped caring a long time ago, I will watch it if it seems ok, but most anime annoys me of late. There is a just too much of the characters breaking up the flow and going on in a long whiney diatribe about this and that. Doesn’t mean I don’t like it, I just don’t go all crazy for it.

I'm currently watching Eureka seveN and Fate / Stay Night, and they are both excellent. I've also started eating up older manga, which primarily started with Black Lagoon (which has a TV show starting...tomorrow!) and Battle Angel Alita.

I'm a sucker for mechs, guns, and girls with guns, though.

And just because I can...if anything, try Eureka seveN. Goes for anyone. Wonderful series.

As far as currently running stuff that is top notch stuff, my recommendations are Eureka Seven, Noein, and Mushishi. ES is one of the best mecha animes in a long time. Noein has some of the best fight scenes I've seen in any anime. Mushishi, well I can't describe it very well. Just watch it.

If you want some brainless fun though, check out Pani Pani Poni Dash, Magikano, and Shakugan no Shana. PPPD and Magikano are good comedy shows, whole SNS is a decent action show.

Look around Anime Yume a bit for good stuff. I rather liked Suzuka and I'll heartily second Shakugan no Shana, which is awesome. Speed Grapher is also decent.

Anything by Studio Ghibli/Hayao Miyazaki.

(Laputa, Nausicaa, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, et cetera.)

Already own it. I also have:

  • Akira (didn't much like it)
  • Appleseed (meh)
  • Armitage III (loved it)
  • Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (great, if preachy)
  • Ghost in the Shell (outstanding)
  • Green Legend Ran (okay)
  • Legend of Lemnear (meh)
  • Malice@Doll (hilariously bad dialogue, though interesting graphics)
  • MD Geist (a fun romp)
  • Neon Genesis Evangelion (didn't get past the first 5 minutes)
  • Perfect Blue (not my thing)
  • Princess Mononoke (awesome)
  • Sprited Away (awesome)
  • Steamboy (not bad)
  • Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (liked the first one better)
  • Wicked City (meh)

So what am I missing that's must-see?

Fuck no. The animation is okay but the female lead looks like a boy when she's young and my grandma when she's old. They took a charming, romantic fairy tale story and turned it into this sprawling anti-war diatribe.

No it wasn't. Even for anime, the whole war subplot was bad. Let's face it, anime is a genre that is for the most part obsessed with apocalyptic war. All of the major "first gen" anime (the original Astro Boy, Yamato/Starblazers, Robotech, Giant Robo, Gigantor, etc) were either in the throes of a war or post-war.

Also keep in mind that the director of the film has been quoted in several articles, magazines, etc as saying this was his "anti-war" movie.

The novel this was based on was pretty good. Not Terry Pratchett good, but it was clever. Could have fit 90 minutes nicely. The problem was that they filled it with the wizard inexplicably avoiding being drafted, and at the same time flying off to fight oily black shit demon monsters over flaming cities.
