Fuck no. The animation is okay but the female lead looks like a boy when she's young and my grandma when she's old. They took a charming, romantic fairy tale story and turned it into this sprawling anti-war diatribe.
I think I remember hearing this from someone...but who?!

I mean, you have two awesome samurai and one alright girl, but for every episode about Gin (imo, the cooler one) or Fuu (who cares), there are like forty for Mugen. After awhile, it just seems like the Mugen show and you get tired of him.
My favorite anime is still FMA. Dibs on Pride.

With a twist. Because, OMG! The bounty is on them! HAHAHA!
Great pop art style. Not enough edgy plot severing itself from conventional anime.

At least, that's how I saw it. Only saw a couple episodes though.

So what am I missing that's must-see?
If you want to see something Gundam, Char's Counter attack. It is a little spazzy and preachy are times, but it does sum up the entire(and really most of the varient series) Gundam themes and ideals. Endless Waltz is a newer, and does the same thing, but I like the UC Gundams better.
Cowboy Bebop movie if you haven't seen the regular show. Again like the Gundam full lengths, the movie is more or less a rehash of the major themes and messages of the show. Honestly, if you haven't seen the normal show, it is worth it to do so.
Jin Roh was suffers from anime preachy-ness, but I liked it, and it is genuine animation for the most part too.
Looking for some really old school shit, Galaxy Express 999 or Captain Harlock, though I warn ya these can be hard to get right, Matsumoto's works tend to have bad cases of cut-paste-hack dvd's
Don't bother with the Armitage sequel, it blows. Patlabor is kind aboring.
Also see Ninja Scroll, very bloody, very fun.
Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, also very nice, modern totalitarian japan, similar environment as akira, complete different plot mechanics, no wtf superpowers iirc.
If you could ever be convinced to watch a serial anime, let it be Cowboy Bebop, I think its value is worth enduring 26 parts to it, it also has an amazing full length movie to it. But I'm also a fanboi, so my opinion must be taken with certain reservations.
My dad won't watch any anime that I'm watching at a given time, but he sat through most of Cowboy Bebop. He didn't watch the rest out of time issues. He said he liked it a lot though.

I've never liked it, aside from the last couple episodes. Even that is pushing it.
It's now on Cartoon Network, making it fair game for hatred.

The last parts with Asuka were awsome, but the rest just awful and made no sense at all.

Well, episodes 24-26 are supposed to be replaced by the End of Evangelion movie, so maybe you should rent that and see if it makes it up for you. :/

I bought that, too. It still made me a very very sad bunny for spending so much time and money on an awsome series that ended so horribly.
Yeah. I can't argue with you there. Even if you make sense of it in your own way (that's how you make sense of Eva) the ending sucked. Pretty horribly.
I still liked the anime on a whole though. Shinji should've died. They killed almost everyone else. Why couldn't he go too?

Other Gainax series (Melody of Oblivion and Kare Kano specifically) end just as badly. They seem to have a penchant for throwing the plot to hell in the last five episodes in favor of pointless bullshit.

Kare Kano didn't have an ending. What the hell is you be smokin'?
That series could've went on for several more seasons.
And I would've bought it all oh christ I want more.

I was more referring to how the last five episodes devolved into tangential crap unrelated to what was happening in the story.

Those Who Hunt Elves. Very awsome short series. I LOVE it. However, they made Ritsuko's T72 into a total joke when they let it get possessed by a CAT SPIRIT. I mean, a main battle tank meowing at things and acting all =^.^=!?!??? That really made me cry >.<
Martian Successor Nadesico. I loved this series too... heck I need to rewatch it, I seem to have forgotten the point I was going to make about this series Umm... if I remember right, at some point the lil blue haired girl was 'found out' to be some sort of omg crazy space princess. I mean, seriously, what idiot thought that was worth introducing to the plot?
Gah! I used to know a lot more, but they are not coming to mind at the moment

Yeah well...that's because at the end of any Gainax series, they have to fire their entire crew because they made the first half or more of the series so amazing with animation that they couldn't afford it for the butt end of the series. So they stick to metaphorical and symbolistic bullshit.
A good way they did this was the manga episode of Kare Kano when they danced cutouts in front of the camera the whole episode. FUCKING BRILLIANCE.
A bad example of this would be the elevator scene and also the scene where Unit-01 is holding Kaworu about ready to pop his frickin' head off. CHEAP ANIMATION FTL. Also how most of the last two episodes of eva were done in black and white or just line animation or cuts of words. Seriously Gainax save some money. D:

I don't remember Ruri being a space princess haha. But Nadesico is my favorite space/mecha anime by a longshot. It's so awesome.

Ok, The part I laughed at, which apparently I'm the only person that ever found the ironic comedy in this, is where the americans are firebombing the city and the main character is running through cheering the americans on as hes looting stuff. I found this to be funny, and everyone jumps on me and tells me I'm a horrible person before I can make my case. Then even if I do get to make my case nobody remembers this scene as its a like 2 second scene in the directors cut version that nobody remembers.
And no, cats are too cute to put firecrackers up the butts of. I do enjoy useing canned air to freeze bugs though.
