We all know how fat kids love cake. Surely most of have seen those fat kids who wear overalls with that little pocket on the front? That pocket totally has cake in it.

Nerds are often fat kids. They play nerdy games and talk about nerdy things while eating cake from their cake pockets.

This is, in essence, how the term "cake pocket" was coined. It refers to all things nerdy, like table-top RPGs as provided in the above-linked rar.

Because people who keep their books on their laptops don't already have them ready to go when playing?

Between my group, we have pretty much every book in physical form. We also have thme all on PDFs. We use our laptops to keep our character sheets on that are built using Heroforge. So we always have everything at our fingertips. The only books we keep physically handy are the core rulebooks that need to be referenced the most.

PDFs are invaluable in my opinion, for the simple fact that when I'm building a character, I tend to reference a great many books, even if I only use material from a few, and being able to just tab through them as opposed to having them all physically cluttering my desk is fantastic. Not to mention that reading text off a backlit screen is much easier than reading from an above-lit book.

When the books are poorly laid out, and I mean literally how stuff in printed and organized on the page not location of rules in the book, it's much easier to read a hardcopy. I find it particularly true of this thread's pdfs.

Edit: I'm taking the rar off the webspace for now. If anyone wants it, let me know and I'll find you a link to one of the million torrents or something.

Thus far, my biggest beefs are the general lack of fluff (good and bad since I use 2nd and 3rd setting with 3.5 or 4e rules) and the lack of magic items. Some things, like weapons for small size PCs, need some house ruling but come out better than 3.5 house ruling. .

The major difference I'm seeing is that the house rules I need for 4th have less impact on balance. The standard setup for converting monsters into playable PC races is much cleaner and simpler, for example. One my players wants to be a yuan ti; basic conversion based on the Yuan-ti Malison Disciple of Zehir is +2 Con, +2 Cha, Soothing Words becomes a daily power instead of recharge, skill bonuses: +2 bluff, +2 religion, speed 7 and size medium. To do the same in 3.5 is...a headache in finding a way to avoid the shitty level adjustment mechanic and still have a race that retains the signature qualities of a yuan-ti.

Reading the books won't give you the same impressions as actually playing the game.

Me and my friends have played this edition already thanks to the quick start module they released on the 20th. Some of them didn't like it after reading stuff, they all liked it after having played it. Big difference between reading and playing.

Yes. The 5 pre-genned classes in the module were well balanced with each other, nothing screamed overpowered or underpowered. Combat is faster and arguably more fun. Combat is better overall because every character takes roughly the same amount of time to take their turn, the usual melee goes quick, casters take forever deciding spells is gone. People choose the power from their lists, which is a small amount, fairly fast, combat gets done, there's more moving and tactical considerations.

Overall, 4th is not superior to 3.5 or 3.0 or 2nd or 1st. It's different and that's all. But I personally find it more enjoyable than 3.5. It also really does help actually playing it. Your mileage may vary.

4e's a really mixed bag thus far. Looks like a fun setup overall but I really question some of the design decisions; one of the most prominent that really gets me angry is the removal of necromancy from cleric spell options. It's pretty shitty to have one of the iconic villain types missing from the core game. Certainly there's a template in the DMG that has a wee bit of necromantic flavor but it's no replacement for the various animating spells.

On the other hand, Warlord makes a much more interesting replacement for Bard and is a great difference in flavor from Cleric as a healer.

4e fixed pretty much everything that was wrong with 3e in one fell swoop. Almost everything that people bitch about flavor-wise can be completely overwritten, and 4e in fact encourages you to adapt the flavor of whatever you're doing to fit your character concept. My only real beef was was lack of flavor, but when you realize it really only gives you more reason to use your imagination, rather than pigeonholing your character, you come to see that it's better off with the "less is more" approach.

As you'll notice, the PHB is meant to allow you to create heroes, not villains. There's nothing to stop you from making your necromantic cleric. QQ more.

A well-planned campagin is an exercise in homebrew. If you can't take a few minutes to come up with something simple but effective like I did, what does that say of the rest of your game? Hell, a lot of Cleric powers deal radiant damage. You can change that to necrotic damage and voila! Instant necromancer!

The point wasn't missed, the point is that you want to be lazy and blame it on the system for not giving you exactly what you want. The point isn't about necromancy, it's about you wanting to QQ.
